JustinTime4Tea on slatedroid.com has built a nice package based on PicUntu updated with latest drivers and offering a complete Linux system pre-installed for multi usage with tons of gaming, development, office, Internet and multimedia applications ready to use. The Mali400 GPU integrated on the RK3066 processor is partially supported, offering GLES/EGL hardware acceleration on some games and applications. PicUntu Home://io edition is currently supported mainly on the MK808 MiniPC (available for ~ $42 / €35) it should work on other RK3066 devices equipped with the same hardware, specifically WIFI drivers (RK901 / Broadcom BCM40181 - 4329 chipset). Original PicUntu package and Home://io edition are both works in progress, wider support for more Rockchip RK3066 (maybe RK3188 as well) based devices is expected in the future.

have tried whilst connected via usb and put in black screen and also tried whilst in recovery and also just in normal usb mode but same not found error(following thetutorial directed to thepart after it says grab a paperclip is missing so maybe im missing something am using ubuntu

You need to burn the image to your sdcard with Win32 Disk Imager, download the firmware update and install it to your MiniPC. I am planning to prepare an updated package with latest Picuntu modules and Mali 400 support together with more detailed instructions.

I'll post more information in a couple of days.

I have had problem with wi-fi on mk808: my device hang with android when I change to wi-fi enable

i have installed more Rom but with all i have had the same problem;

so for me I decide to install a version like ubuntu to workaround this problem.

I know linux beginner not advanced, so i don't know how to do all statement exacly

1) I have download Firmware image download .img file and I have boot mk808 after update.omg

when i boot this, I have a prompt like this:

PicUntu Linux package for RK3066 based MiniPC is improve their hardware support by releasing a new kernel together with a bunch of modules. This update brings a lot of new features such as cpufreq governors, serial devices support (FTD-SIO, pl2303, Garmin) UVC Camera support, iptables, NFS client and many other things (see complete changelog below).

Installing PicUntu RC3 kernel and modules

The new kernel is meant to be installed as a recovery image on your MiniPC, it ships in 3 flavors for different screen resolutions: VGA, 720p and 1080p.

The modules should go in /lib/modules/ so you'd need to do the following:

I have read that i can't use 3D openGL support for games.

I need to install a webcam and run some face-tracking code and I want to know if with this ubuntu (linux), i could use the openGL libraries for use the openCV libraries (http://opencv.org) or the openframeworks libraries (http://www.openframeworks.cc/download/)?

Well, you should be able to flash all the firmware image part (system, boot, recovery,...) using RKAndroidTool as I mentioned. Just point the bootloader, parameter file and each image to the files you extracted and you should be fine.

For Rockchip firmware related info, you can learn a lot working with the tools I mentioned and experimenting by yourself. This site also has some info.

I'm still a little confused, though. I got the RK2918 tools working and used afptool on the backup.img file. It produced the following files:

As you can see, system.img is the big file, about 175MB. But it doesn't appear to have the all-important "RKFW" header, that all the custom firmwares ("update.img") seem to have.
Which file should I use? Or what else should I do?

The easiest option is to take apart the different images out of the backup.img file.

Check the tools from here:

You'll need (on top of my head) : rkunpack and afptool.

Once you have all the image parts, just setup RKAndroidTool (available from here) and flash your device.

Many thanks for this tutorial. It worked like a charm on my Arnova 9 G3. One sidenote: you need to set the .pl file to be executable with

chmod +x an10g2_dump.pl

before you can run it.

Dumb question: can I use the resulting backup.img file in the Rockchip flashing tool to restore my stock firmware? Or is there some sort of magic that needs to be performed on it before it can be used in that tool? "backup.img" seems to be the same size as the various custom firmwares available on this site, but I thought I'd ask before giving it a go.

What i did
-zip file which should be flashed via cwm

In case you get an error like 6 or 7
On the download page i added also a modified updater-script and one update-binary, if the first attempt of flashing does not work, you should only add the updater-script in the META-INF/com/google/android/ if you still get an arror after this add also the update-binary in the same place.

It is hard to create a flashable zip since i do not have the tablet to test packages.
So, i am just trying to learn how to create flashable zip for the moment.
The other requests
-power menu it should be achivable, there are tutorial on xda on how to add it
-for the kernel oc/vid controll involves having the source files, and compiling a new kernel, i don`t know how to do that, and i also don`t like the way in which the boot and kernel are not in one simple boot.img

IN THIS FLASHING PROCESS THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE BRICKING YOUR TABLET, IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO REVIVE YOU ShOULD NOT TRY THIS.

Here are some instructions on how to dump a firmware of a Rockchip CPU based tablet.

Required Linux system, preferably an Ubuntu/Debian 64 bits (not running in a virtual machine like Vmware or Virtualbox).

You can use Steve (ttz642t) script to dump a Rockchip based tablet firmware:

We have compiled a package with binaries (64 bits) to make it easier for you, so what you need to do is open a console/terminal in Ubuntu, then download the archive using:

wget http://www.arctablet.com/assets/tools/Firmware/Rockchip_CPU_based/Rockchip_dump_Linux_01.tgz

then unpack it with

tar xvfz Rockchip_dump_Linux_01.tgz

change dir:

cd Rockchip_dump_Linux

install libusb:

sudo apt-get install libusb-1.0-0-dev

(you'll need to enter your root password when prompt)

Plug the power connector and the micro usb cable on your tablet and put your device in flash mode using a paper clip in the reset button (see Rockchip Flashing tool article to discover the right "key" combination for your tablet model to enter flash mode)

Finally run the dump script:

perl ./an10g2_dump.pl

You should have the dumped files in a subdirectory named after the date/time the script was run in the format like 20120702_1238

We'll need the backup.img file from that dump subdirectory.

i cannot for the life of me extract boot.imghow do strip the header for a start lol im a real noob

Before i was going to change the boot.img i wanted to known if recreating an idendical boot.img was possible.
what i did to check was:
- strip header and footer from boot.img, that gave me a gzipped initrd file
- exstract the the initrd (with was a cpio)
- change nothing
- build a new initrd (with cpio and gzip)
- use rkcrc -p to recreate boot.img
with a small change to rkcrc (changing the header from PART to KNRL)
The new boot.img and the original boot.img are idendical

great thanks ive found it and unpacked it im trying to port cm7 and found this http://androtab.info/cyanogenmod/rockchip/ however i cant get in the system.img or boot.img to do my own editing i managed the origional one you supplied in newtuxflas tools (part of afptool) and could edit it bout i think these 2 are corrupt as im doing it in exactly same way and ive tried other methods of unpacking but with no luck also if i dont manage it can you bring me uptodate whith additions to mae pretty please eg ext4 file system and larger appspace ect thanks

thirdly, ok I understand roughly what you mean, I'm only wanting to change small thing nothing like changing the ui completely .

I just don't want to completely brick my arnova because it's only 3 days old.

A good starting point is to follow some of the recipes in the Arnova 10 G2 firmware modification thread:

Unfortunately, Sowa and myself had some issues in building a firmware for the Arnova 7 G2 using these methods. For now this is all about trial and error, not really an exact science

Finally, you need to understand that making firmware changes are limited, as we are working mostly on the binary level without the source code for the firmware. This should change soon, as Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3.7) is being adapted on RK2918 devices as it was on older RK2818 tablets (/blog/archos-tablet/preview-release-cm7-android-2-3-market-root-archos-7-htv2/)

Hi call me mad but even through I have no experience in making firmwares for anything,

I'm willing to learn how to do basic patch work for Arnova 7 g2 because theres more bugs with it then I can count and it's feeling more and more like a early beta.

If anyone is interested in helping me then I can give you a list of the bugs I've found and you can tell me how difficult they will be to fix.

PS: I'm half addressing the admin because he knows how to make firmwares ( EG for arnova 10,8 and 10b ) but I've posted this on the forum because there could be other people who could help aswell.
