ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery easy install for RK3066 and RK3188 -- TWRP/CWM Flash-Tool and root for RK3288
Please donate to support OMA and CrewRKTablets firmware work, thank you !
Here is an Android 4.1 JB rooted firmware for the PIPO S1 (DS733) tablet based on latest official update from Pipo (S1_update_20121227.zip)
Kernel: Linux version 3.0.8+ (root@wzq-G41M-ES2L) (gcc version 4.4.3 (GCC) ) #110 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 25 21:59:52 CST 2012
Android 4.1 JB: PIPO/DS733/DS733:4.1.1/JRO03H/20120923.161021:eng/release-keys
Based on the build signature above it seems the Linux kernel is brand new, while the Android system hasn't been updated (2012/09/23)
Custom firmware features:
- root with latest SuperSU version 0.99 (free version)
- writable /system partition
- removed most Chinese and unnecessary applications
- increased space for application (/data partition) to 2 Gb.
Download: kasty-pipo-s1-ds733-41-20121227-rooted.zip
Please report any problem with this firmware, I can't verify this custom firmware works as I don't have a PIPO S1 tablet to test the custom firmware.

This is great. I especially find the expansion of the partition useful. One thing though, I am also interested to find out which version of the official firmware you used for the modification. The reason is I read a post from Slatedroid where a user tried the English version and it doesn't have all fixes (SD Card issue, sound). The one I recently updated to is 'Firmware of PIPO S1_20121224' and it has those fixes in place. Thanks.

Post #1 : "based on latest official update from Pipo (S1_update_20121227.zip)"
User from another forum complains about low performance in games (GPU work at lower frequency ?). Can somebody confirm/infirm this lower performance ? Thanks !

There are 2 versions of the official firmware on PiPO's site. The English version (the filename has 20121227 in it) which I think is what this custom firmware is based on. The other one is the regular chinese version (the filename has 20121224 in it). The 2nd one (Chinese version) is the one I have currently running on my tablet because I heard from the other forum that English version still have the SD card & sound issues. Other than the screen dimming issue (which I used an app to get around) and the partition size being 1GB, I think it is pretty much perfect. They may be other issues but I haven't noticed anything else that bothers me.
Fratello/yochiwarez - can you let me know which specific games has performance problems, name a few that are confirmed to be slow. I can test it on mine. I remember I tried 3D Bowling, Fruit Ninja but I didn't notice any slowdown. However, these games I loaded are not very graphics intensive.

fratello,
I've made a rooted firmware based on your file above.
Download:
kasty-pipo-s1-ds733-41-test1-rooted.zip
But it seems pretty ancient:
Kernel build: Linux version 3.0.8+ (hkw@mid-server) (gcc version 4.4.0 (GCC) ) #511 SMP PREEMPT Mon Sep 24 15:05:34 CST 2012
Android build: PIPO/DS733/DS733:4.1.1/JRO03H/20120923.161021:eng/release-keys
Let me know how it goes.

Wow ! Great job ! Thank You so much ! I will tested this fw later...now the tablet it's "blocked" ...my son fight hard with "The Amazing Spider-Man" (this is one game for speed testing !) and I have no more access !
Another games for testing : Asphalt 7, Backstab, N.O.V.A. 3 ... They are using great "visual effects" and I think they need a lot of GPU resources ...
Regards !

I have been doing some Game testing with the official S1 firmware I have (S1 update_20121224.rar). Sorry, I can't try the games Fratello suggested because I don't already have a copy of it and it is not easy for me to get them. Instead I tried a bunch of games that are freely available on play store. I try to get the ones that has 3D graphics and play through each game for at least 1 mission (some times more just because they are quite fun).
Here is the list: Blood & Glory, Contract Killer Zombies 2, Dead Trigger, Deer Hunter Reloaded, Don 2 Lite, Dragon Slayer, Fighting Tiger Liberal, Frontline Commando, Need for Drift, Overkill, ShadowGun DeadZone, Star Warfare HD, The Dead.
I am happy to say that I have not experience any problems with the games I have tested. All works perfectly with no lag. I think it is safe to say that the firmware I have don't have 3D performance issue.
ArcTablet - can you please do your customization based on the following firmware. I tested it enough that it is as perfect as we have today for this tablet. I would really appreciate having the 2GB partition.

Before I work on rooting the firmware you posted in the link above, I just want to make sure it is better than the one I published in post #1 which is dated at a later date (12/27 for post #1, 12/24 on yours)
Cheers.
