Here is latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update for the Onda V973 tablet (hardware V1) based on newest Onda firmware release version 3.2 dated 2013/07/04. This firmware actually uses the same version number as previous Onda release, but the build dates for kernel and Android system are more recent. It's very possible that previous firmware released in June was a pre-release and this new 3.2 is a final release.

Compared to firmware version 3.0 or older, this update brings many enhancements such as a faster boot (5 seconds !) smoother system and a reduced power consumption in stand-by mode.

Firmware build information:

Linux Kernel:  Linux version 3.3.0 (lgm@SzExdroid5) (gcc version 4.6.3 20120201 (prerelease) (crosstool-NG linaro-1.13.1-2012.02-20120222 - Linaro GCC 2012.02) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jul 4 09:43:24 CST 2013

Android system: onda/fiber_onda974q9/fiber-onda974q9:4.2.2/JDQ39/20130704:eng/opinions-on-teclast-p90hdst-keys

Our rooted custom firmware features:

  • root with latest SuperSU 1.41 (free version)
  • system default setup English
  • removed most Chinese and unnecessary applications
  • Google Play Store fixes so more application are visible/compatible
  • updated busybox¬†v1.21.0.git (2012-11-29)
  • Unix like¬†init.d boot scripts support, more details on init.d scripts¬†here
  • changed permissions on external sdcard to allow write access

Download: kasty-onda_v973_v1-422-v32_20130704-rooted0.zip

Flash with PhoenixSuite (tutorial)

After flashing the tablet, a Setup Wizard should display on first boot to configure your network, regional settings, etc… If the wizard does not appear, just disconnect your USB cable from the tablet, make a short press on the power button to turn off the screen. After the screen is turned of, press the power button for a short time again to power the tablet, the Setup wizard should appear.

Please report any problem with this firmware, I can't verify this custom firmware works as I don't have a Onda V973 (hardware V1) to test it.

You are not alone,

I also have a V972, and depite both having the latest 3.2 firmware, it's night and day.

V972: Fast stable wifi, butter smooth since 3.2.

V973: Weak slow wifi, laggy just like in 3.0 (yes I have completely reflashed with mandatory format).

I wonder if onda really have made some major change on the 3.2 for the V973 or if it's just a 3.0 with the quick boot...

Strange. I find the V973 really responsive now and the wifi a lot better.

I've got the latest stock firmware.

Let's say that they are indeed improvements over the 3.0 on both wifi and speed, but not as much as they were on the 972 from 3.0 to 3.2.

EDIT: I did a test with the V972 and V973 facing each over, the 972 feels about 10% faster in every task, touchscreen latency is lower, the 972 feels more reactive and less laggy, I wonder if onda have used lower quality flash chips on the 973?

For info my 972 is V2, and my 973 is V1.

Would be interesting to know. The exact details of what's different on these machines isn't clear to me. They always quote better battery and thinner case on the 3 but you're left wondering what else.

After testing a bit more, I find the wifi not good at all in this version: I get disconnected a lot of times and have to restart the tablet in order for it to work again...

I did not have this problem with the stock version of the V3.2 final...
