You can do an upgrade from this one to CyanogenMod 10.2 and get rid of all Chinese stuff except A31 logo at the boot. I found it more stable (with V972 V2) than stock/kasty 3.2x ... worth trying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HyQLbg73bc

Instructions are for 10.1 ...you just need new/different files for 10.2

I have tried the latest CyanogenMod 10.2 from ChristianTroy and it seems to workk very well - so far - on my Onda V813.

There were some problems going straight from the Kasty version of 3.2., so I had to reflash the stock Onda firmware then, then TWRP, then the Cyanogenmod and all works as it should.

Pingu.

PS It certainly is one way to get rid of the Chinese boot pictures.

Btw, I still didn't tried Cyanogenmod, but when I flashed with this new 3.2.1 version of the Kasty custom firmware, my score with Antutu Benchmark raised to 18601!!  With the former version of the firmware, my score was only around 10500 which I though they was low for a tablet with these specifications, but now it is more as how it should be.

PS: Sorry if my English grammar was not right.

Benchmark is one thing. Real experience is what matters.

I don't care about Antutu scores if I have sluggish, slow responsive tablet with random system crashes. That was in my case with stock / kasty 3.2.1

I will look into Antitu with Cyanogenmod but I really don't expect any major difference.

You are right, but in this case the score matches with reality. With previous version of the firmware v3.0 (both, the oficial and the kasty firmwares), my tablet got stuck frequently, every time wifi was doing something, my tablet got stuck, specially after awaking it from sleeping, when wifi starts syncing etc, it got stuck for several minutes, what was a pain when you were just to look for something on the web for a minute.

But now with this version 3.2 all is great! Wifi is no more freezing my tablet not even after sleeping so the 80% increase in the antutu scores is nothing compared with my real experience! The only thing I disliked was the boot chinese pictures, I think there is no point to them and I don't understand why they put them, I'd rather the sequence of logos from the former version, but it's a cheap price to pay for the great increase in the performance I got. I really think they made things well this time, and it only remains to get rid of the annoying speaker noises when they start to make sounds.

Hi

I tried flashing with the file dl from this thread, however, my Onda ends up dead black, not even able to boot up.

I flashed it with phoenixsuit and it says "successful"

I have re-flashed a couple of times.

my Onda's serial is V973QAD5V1E00414

I have downloaded the correct rom right?

Can anyone advice me what I could do? My Onda is totally bricked :(

What do you mean its totally bricked? Have you tried flashing the regular firmware from Onda? I had mine pretty screwed up many times with nuking CWM/recovery.img, and CM 10.1. I had to use PhoenixSuit to recover many times. It seems its pretty hard to brick these devices. Its likely your not doing something correct and/or maybe not holding down the power button long enough. I noticed mine is very inconsistent on the time required pressing power before the tablet turns on.

Based on your serial # you are using the right rom, the 9th and 10th digits represent the version, in your case V1 like me, so this is the correct firmware for that.

This firmware/rom worked great for me on my V973 V1, and was the first firmware or anything I ran that allowed me a working TWRP install. Installed TWRP from ArcTools installed on this rom, which anyone can do easily. When I installed TWRP manually before, via adp shell and cat, touch drivers would not load and I had unusable recovery. Thus switching to CWM which I am more familiar with, but had to many problems there. I tried this firmware, and am quite pleased with it thus far. Not sure if I will switch back to CM 10.2 or not. I do not like that soft volume control buttons are missing in CM, and CM has more stuff for phones, sim pkg, and other stuff I have to remove. Since the Onda does not have hardware for that stuff. For that reason I prefer the modified Onda firmware, though have always run CM or other custom roms on my android devices. Now if there was a version of CM modified for the Onda, lacking the things that the Onda does hardware wise, gps, bluetooth, cell, sim, etc. Then I would likely switch to that, but really not sure the benefit of CM at this time. I think the other stuff being there could cause some bloat and/or performance issues, but that is assumed not tested. Could be CM performs better than modified Onda firmware.

BTW one thing aside from volume buttons you do not get with CM roms but you do with this one, is the fast boot option. NOT the fastboot command/tool in ADT. I did not see that present itself as an option on reboot/power off on CM 10.1. I might have missed something or needed to modify something for that, or is there in newer CM. I assume its something specific to the Onda firmware.

Another thing I forgot about, with CM 10.1 USB was not functioning. I could not transfer files or use adb. All I could do was charge, which was pretty odd. Thus CM 10.1 was pretty unusable for me without working USB. USB works as expected with this rom/firmware.

Either way this rom/firmware is good stuff, thanks!

obsidian-studios, Thanks for the advice.

After many trial and error, I finally determined the cause.

My Onda v973 is actually v2 instead of v1 stated in the serial number!!!

Now my Onda is working fine after I flashed it with V2 hardware rom.

For anyone who is experiencing the same issue I have, you can give it a try.

Easy mistake to make I thought I had a v2 and had to research. When googling I came across this http://www.onda-tablet.com/onda-v973-quad-core-9-7-inch-ultra-thin-android-tablet-pc-dual-camera-16gb-white-questions.html?dir=ASC&p=4 that mentioned

  • How do you determine which version of v973 I have. V1 or V2 for firmware.
What do you check on serial?

    Thanks

  • Onda Tablet:
    Thank you for your mail.
Please check the SN code on the back ,the 9 and 10 number.

After translation that means, the 9th and 10th characters of the serial number comprise of your version #. Thus I was able to determine I had a V1 and got the correct stuff for that. While they say the versions are all the same, V1 and V2, there seem to be some slight hardware differences, different drivers for touch, but the hardware specs seem to be the same, no difference there. Nice and confusing :)

My Onda's serial like iI mmentioned earlier, actually tells me it is v1, that's why I'm at this thread.

However, it is the v2 ffirmware that works for me, strange.

Interesting, V2 firmware did not work on my V1, so I definitely do not have a V2, and my serial # shows V1. Pretty odd yours shows V1 and is a V2. Wonder if there are others out there like that. Are you able to put yours into recovery mode via hardware buttons? I was unable to, I made a post on xda developers about that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2438883 Just curious if there is any different there on V1 and V2, assuming not, but might be.

I had to flash my Onda V972 V1 again today to Android 4.1.1 version 2.0 root custom firmware as I find it more stable at the moment. Although I appreciate the changes especially with the new interface provided by Android 4.2.2 (very good with playing 3D games), I believe it still have some bugs and compatibilty issues with other playstore games.

Also, I tried using several versions of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean root custom firmware and found out that MXPlayer, my favorite video player for hd mkv movies would crash and freeze my screen. After that, I have no choice but to make a hard reset of my tab. While I can simply use the included 4K player for these movies, I still find it useful if I could choose from these two wonderful video players. MXPlayer has some features which makes it more useful for playing movies on some occasions so I would appreciate it very much if anyone could also confirm this bug.

Based from reviews, the latest MXPlayer should already be compatible with the latest Jelly Bean, but I guess, not with the latest firmware update for Onda V972..;-(

I am also hoping to find a better version for this Android 4.2.2 cause I don't think that the software engineers from Onda should settle with version 3.2.1 yet. I'm really frustrated but I'm keeping my hopes up.

Dear Admin,

Do you have a plan for release v3.3.1 for v973 (v1 hardware)?

(I hope you have :) i really wait for it... )
