I've had my V973 for a few weeks now.
It came rooted, with Android 4.2.2 ROM 3.0_v2 (May 2013).
The screen is fantastic. wi-fi performance 'adequate' (excellent from a mi-fi or mobile phone in hotspot mode).
The only complaint I have, and it's a major one, is the terrible audio. And I mean terible. the speakers produce very little sound - barely useable even for system sounds. The headphone socket is even worse, with audio reproduction akin to listening to someone talking in a distant room.
Both problems have been solved, in a fashion, with additional hardware. For earphones/headphones I use a pocket battery-driven guitar pre-amp called a Korg PX4 'Pandora' as a headphone socket. It provides sufficient gain and volume, plus humdinger compression to provide more than enough volume from the 3.5mm port. I also have a 'Boosterer' earphone pre-amp, but that doesn't have the means to change treble, bass, middle, gain etc like the Pandora.
For the duff speakers, I use a clip-on Logitech tablet speaker, again through the 3.5mm port. It improves things, but once again, having the Pandora in the chain provides more control.
So the add-on hardware does the trick, but it is hardly mobile.
Is there a ROM released that improves audio on the V973? I haven't tried an update, principally because I don't use Windows (everything Mac in my house is OS X/IOS or Android) and PhonenixSuite only uses Windows. I have a VirtualBox XP partition, but can't get a USB connection to the tablet working for Phoenix' to see. I beleive it can be used, but I've not found a combination which works.
If there is any likelihood that a ROM update of the V973 WILL improve audio, then I can borrow a Windows laptop.
I have noticed that custom ROM's aren't accompanied with Release Notes, so it isn't clear what has been changed/removed/introduced with each new ROM.
If anyone has had experience in say installing a 3.2 v2 ROM for the V973 and seeing audio output improved I would be very grateful. Likewise if a flash of a later ROM release produced no improvement that too would be useful.
Otherwise I will persist with the current installed 3.0 version. In every regard except for the dire audio the V973 is a great piece of kit. Shame Onda blundered in the one area that a few dollers spent would have paid itself off easily.

Yes, audio is terrible as speakers are of a low quality, but you can greatly improve loudness with new firmwares:
Check you V973 version beforehand - serial number should have V1 or V2 in it.
btw, click of a sound driver before any sound is played still there, not fixed yet

Hi Iprzkugm,
That's great news.
I have a V2 so I am going to give that a go with PhoenixSuite.
I updated VirtualBox with the Extension Pack and that provides enhanced USB suppprt, so I suspect I will be able to get the tablet to respond.
