For all those complaining about the battery. I don't think it will be fixed since it is not a software issue, Onda put the same battery it put in non Retina (Full HD) tablets in this Retina tablet. Retina displays use a lot of power to work so the only solution is to change the battery not the firmware

True what your saying, but let me tell you a short story, I have a oldish a Star A500 dual phone from China, it had  Android 2.2 Froyo & the battery was ridiculous, got it changed something, couldn't up date it, but found out how to, once I installed Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread the battery last at least 2 days & that's with gps, wireless & Bluetooth on, with these off almost a week, opposed to the ridiculous 1 day, now was this the firmware or hardware ? in this case firmware.  Just before I sign off, the Onda v972 which I got back just over a week ago had 4.1.1 & the battery was good, a massive improvement, but since I put this 4.2.2 (3.2) the battery just counts down like a stop watch, you figure.

What you are saying is true but tablets are different than phones. What you said is mostly optimizing the standby power and since phones usually stay most of the time on standby, hence the improvement you have seen. Tablets on the other hand are meant to be less on standby and people complain about the 4-5 hours which for me is the same since the v2.0 firmware that came with the tablet and hasn't differed with any of the updates. Onda's changelog said optimization in standby power which also confirms what I am saying. The dual core regular screen Onda lasts about 6-8 hours and since the 972 has the same battery with more power hog display, it is expected not to last more than 4-5 hours.

Always compare firmwares on continuous use not on standy/use power consumption because it can never have one baseline

The new ROM is excellent. Nice work!

Can anyone recommend a way to keep these tablets charged? Or can you recommend a replacement charger to buy even, as I expect the one that came with the tablet to eventually burn my house down.

But I'm very pleased with this device for the money, so far.

Thanks in advance for any battery/charging tips you can share.

Any USB 5v charger will do but make sure it is at least 2 Amps otherwise it will take forever to charge

I am seeing a greater battery drain with this ROM as well. I loaded no-frills cpu control classic and set the Governor to "ondemand". It has helped in the past. I also set my CPU to 900/120. I went from 70% to 65% in a matter of minutes downloading some apps from the play store.

It charges fast. At 70 already...

Thanks for this great ROM!  Laugh

Up to version 3.0, I had to wait until all synchronizing of e-mail, updates of apps and so on was finished, before the device was responding properly...

But with this release I can start working immediately, while synchronizing mail is done in the background. I just got the feeling that now, for the first time, all 4 cores are working simultaneously.

Also wifi throughput is double as high compared to the previous builds!

And, yes, battery life is still bad. That’s mainly because of the energy consuming HD display, but is must be possible to extend the battery life at least 20 – 30% by optimizing energy management. Hope this will be done in the next build.

kind regards,

Bert

!!
Onda 972 v1 drains battery more quickly when I flashed fom 4.1.1 to 4.2.2 FULL STOP
!!

So don't mislead users, that this is because of retina display etc...

WE HAVENT CHANGED HARDWARE PARTS - ONLY FLASHED OUR DEVICES!!!

Sorry for caps, but someone has to say: stupidity and bullshit should be painful.

Was it running for more than 5 hours with 4.1.1 ?. Have you formally tested it or you just FEEL it is draining or it just that it drains faster at the beginning ?. Have you even thought of what you are saying. I have tested it with v1.x till 3.x and no difference in the total time it is less than 5 hours with ALL of them. I had all models/types of tablets and done tests on all of them since 2011 (A10, RK2918, Rk3066, A31 and more)

Even Apple increased its battery capacity with iPad4 to compensate for Retina display (you can Google it) but Onda kept the same regular tablet battery

p.s. Only a weak argument is done using swearing and profanity like you did and I won't go down to your level and reply to that

RE: No need downgrading yourself to my level :) I swear sometimes because it is healthful.

So why are you skeptic, when a lot of people complain, that after fleshing Onda v972, battery drains faster?

Well, I will paraphrase...

running more than 6 hours on:
- stock FW
- kasty's: v1.35; v2.0;

running less than 5 hours on:
- kasty's: v3.0; v3.2

When downgrading, battery life improves. CHECKED!

With newer firmware battery should last longer not drain faster, unless overclocking... That's what we all expect and complain...

It feels like it drains faster to me too but I have not tested it.

I had trouble booting my device yesterday. I shut it down. Fast boot option was checked. Powered it on and:

1. Allwinner Logo

2. ONDA/Kasty flashed by very fast and then a black screen.

Had to force it off/on three times to get it to boot.

When it is on and running it is very smooth. Much faster and that is with the CPU underclocked and using ondemand as the option for the governor.

I am using the latest v3.2 and I must confess the battery has been terrible.

The battery only last 2HOURS of continuous use. I am not talking of standby time please. I mean when connected to internet and play Temple run 2 game on it. It last only 2hrs from fully charged.

PLEASE IS THERE A WAY TO CHANGE THE SCREEN DISPLAY FROM RETINA TO SOMETHING MORE POWER FRIENDLY?

I learn the retina display is responsible for the dismal battery performance. Onda should provide to activate Retina display or other form of display in the next update pls.

I made a duration mistake.... correcting:

Onda v972

running more than 6 hours on:
- stock FW
- kasty's: v1.35; v2.0;

running less than 4 hours on:
- kasty's: v3.0; v3.2

When downgrading, battery life improves. CHECKED!

Why is that !?!
What about USB BlueTooth support in future ?

Battery consumption is a well known issue in 4.2.2 in any device, however in this rom exceeds any expectation, I can literally see the battery percentage decrease like a countdown

I don't think this is true. I have my phone with 4.2.2 and the battery is normal. Going down fast is not the important thing, what is important how long it works continuously (without standby). The battery percentage with several ROMS drop down fast untill maybe 80-70% and then slower (seen this in lots of tablets not just Onda).

Can you please explain how v3.2 is faster, as at the moment I am on v3.0 and I find it okay. I am not that interested in the booting up speed or the closing down speed and I don't want to mess up by installing yet another rom that serves no real purpose. Installing v3.0 was a nightmare.

My internet connection shows all 4 bars and it can pick up on my neighbour who lives across the street about 40 yards away, only two bars but still it "sees" him. My internet download speed is the same as my big PC.

As for battery, its like water on just battery, but as I keep it connected to the charger, its always 100%, and it is not getting as hot as it used to do.

So what are the differences other than a bit of speed.
