Here is a new Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update for the Onda V972 tablet (hardware V1) based on latest Onda firmware release version 3.2. This update brings many enhancements such as a faster boot (5 seconds !) smoother system and a reduced power consumption in stand-by mode.

Firmware build information:

Linux Kernel:  Linux version 3.3.0 (lgm@SzExdroid5) (gcc version 4.6.3 20120201 (prerelease) (crosstool-NG linaro-1.13.1-2012.02-20120222 - Linaro GCC 2012.02) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 18 12:27:17 CST 2013

Android system: onda/fiber_onda978q9/fiber-onda978q9:4.2.2/JDQ39/20130621:eng/opinions-on-teclast-p90hdst-keys

Our rooted custom firmware features:

  • root with latest SuperSU 1.34 (free version)
  • system default setup English
  • removed most Chinese and unnecessary applications
  • Google Play Store fixes so more application are visible/compatible
  • updated busybox v1.21.0.git (2012-11-29)
  • Unix like init.d boot scripts support, more details on init.d scripts here
  • changed permissions on external sdcard to allow write access

Download: kasty-onda_v972_v1-422-v32_20130621-rooted.zip

Flash with PhoenixSuite (tutorial)

After flashing the tablet, a Setup Wizard should display on first boot to configure your network, regional settings, etc… If the wizard does not appear, just disconnect your USB cable from the tablet, make a short press on the power button to turn off the screen. After the screen is turned of, press the power button for a short time again to power the tablet, the Setup wizard should appear.

This custom firmware was tested and confirmed to work on the Onda V972 tablet (hardware V1 model)

I usually put release date with the most recent item from either the kernel and Android system, "20130621" in the case of that firmware. Onda probably took some days to validate their firmware before making it public, which could explain the delay.

I find this dating method more reliable than using the file upload date, as it can be re-uploaded at different places/times.

Cheers.

I can't be sure of anything, the firmware file used to build the custom firmware was downloaded today.

The previous version drained out the battery in no time, have you noticed any improvement in this one?

It is fast and fixed all my apps issue with v3.0. I love it.  However, none of the recovery CWM, TWRP for 4.2.0/4.2.2 work for my v972 v1. I just cannot run any backup. Tried them all already, my device just wouldn't reboot and hanged at A31 logo displayed. I have to reload the v3.2 firmware to get it boot again.

Hi admin,

Great work once again. Do you have a 'how-to' guide anywhere for editing and re-packaging these .img files i.e. what software do you use?

Thanks

Sorry, I'm sure this is an embarrassingly basic question, but could someone explain if there is a way to avoid having to reload all of my apps each time I update to a new version of the firmware?  Each time I've updated, it has wiped out everything, and I have to go back and set it all up.

Install Titanium backup and backup your apss+settings on an SD card and after you reinstall a new firmware use the TB to restore the apps.

Actually, sorry, loads of apps crash on boot up when I flash this version of TWRP so guess it doesn't work after all :( hope there's a version of TWRP that supports 3.2 firmware soon
