I cant get my onda v812 into fastboot mode.  All that i have read about tablets is a button combination involving the volume keys, the problem is that my tablet only has home and power keys.  I have tried apps and i have tried useing the android sdk on my Linux Mint 14 computer and the terminal (fastboot oem unlock,

adb reboot bootloader

).  The directions it come with are in chinese, and i looked online for a english manual but could not find one.  It has custom firmware from this forum and cwm so its rooted.  Any help would be appropriated.

I don't think Onda flasher works with fastboot protocol.

From what I know, the only option for "low level" flashing is to use PhoenixSuit (Windows only program)

Thats how i put the firmware on my tablet, I used my wifes computer and I tried useing android-sdk and run cmd but same thing as linux.  Phoenix Suit worked well flashing my tablet but how can i get it to unlock my bootloader so I can install linux on it.  Im not a fan of android just like I am not a fan of windows.  I read the guide but it still stays in adb mode i checked by typing fastboot devices and adb devices.  Also the taping thing does not work on mine I had to hold the home key plug in the cable and then hold the power key will still holding home for about 12 seconds.

Currently, I don't know of any Linux distro for the Onda or Allwinner A31 based tablets.

On previous Allwinner A10 CPU generation, Linux was installed by booting on a Linux prepared sdcard, no need to unlock bootloader or anything

All the guides i have read say that the bootloader has to be unlocked.   I have only had my tablet for a little while, I don't know tablets well but I do know linux.  Thanks for trying to help.  There was a post on a forum that shows how to install ubuntu on a onda v812 but its in chinese.  I tried translating it but it was still unreadable most asian languages don't translate well so I know its posible.  I wont give up I will find a way.  Also the link says its offline right now but I will try latter.

I think the Onda, has like the rockchip tablets a proprietary bootloader mode, which can be accessed only with the flashing tool provided by them.
What can you do ?
Well, dump all the partitions from the tablet, find out which one contains the bootloader, do some reverse engineering and see what you can discover.
Usually the first partitions contain the bootloader. (exception are the rockchip tablet, some htc phones)

I read a little about rockchips but I am not a programmer so reverse engineering  the bootloader is not something I can do.  I was afraid someone would say that, I doubt anyone will go through the trouble of doing that for a chinese table.  I was surprised someone made custom firmware.  Its sad because its such a good tablet with a 4 core processor at 1.4ghz and 2 gigs of ram.

Don't loose your hope, it seems that the tablets are selling very well, and developers are interested in to them so maybe in couple of months something will become available.

I agree and thanks, this is a powerful tablet that i got for 200.00 dollars.  I have seen other brands with hardware not half as good for 300.00 plus dollars.  All I can do is hope.

There is no way to run ubuntu on the onda.

What you saw in chinese is them simply chrooting into a linux image.

google linuxonadroid to find out what I mean by that.

I have an onda v801. And I run ubuntu 12.04 on top of android using chroot and can compile using jcc, java anything.
