I've got a "Playtab" rk3026 jb4.2 tablet where the wifi won't turn on. The reason for that is a long story, but in short, it's got a stock firmware for an "Acho" ("Archos"?) tablet. So that's probably why. I tried flashing the tablet's original kernel, but no change. I also tried flashing many other kernels and firmwares. And so I've bricked it many times, to where the recovery wouldn't boot, and the PC wouldn't recognize it. I've been lucky so far in unbricking the device, but I don't know if my luck will run out and the next time it'll be permanent!

When tablets are this cheap, the brand name doesn't mean much, so the specs for it are below. The specs match that of some other brands (ie. DragonTouch), but I had no luck with the DragonTouch kernel or ROM.

I finally got the system working again, and I would really like it if the wifi works as well, cos its kind of important! Can someone try to point me in the right direction for a solution? Thanks.

Playtab 9" HD Specs:

OS: jb 4.2
Display: 1024 x 600
Chip: rk3026, 1ghz
Memory: 1gb RAM, 8gb NAND Flash

Thanks for the response, but the D90m kernel didn't work. I flashed only the kernel file, after doing a partial wipe with TWRP (couldn't do full, as the NAND flash isnt recognized by TWRP because it was erased and not reformatted). The result was a black screen, even after rebooting. The PC stopped recognizing the connection, and I could no longer access TWRP recovery. I then erased the NAND again and flashed; loader, parameter, boot, system, misc, plus the D90m kernel. Same result.

Then I flashed back just the original kernel for the stock Acho firmware, and got my no-wifi system back up! Then I checked the specs of the ICCO D90m tablet. While it has a 9" screen, it's an 800x480 display, not 1024x600. It has 512mb RAM, not 1gb. Front camera is a 0.3mp, while my Playtab front is (probably) 2mp.

Any other possible solutions?

I not quied sure if you have the genuine kernel of the tab or not.

I  backed up the genuine (original) kernel of the Playtab. But there are two problems with that....

1) The tablet was stuck on the boot logo screen when I did that. So it saved whatever defects the kernel may have developed.

2) I'm not 100% sure, but it does not look like the kernel is the problem, but rather the system component. When I flashed only the original Playtab kernel component to an otherwise working ROM, it did not fix the problem. When I flashed the system component backup to an otherwise working ROM, same thing happened: stuck on Playtab boot screen animation. Maybe I need to find an entire jb4.2 ROM that is compatible with the Playtab, including its wifi component, rather than just trying to fix it with different kernels?

Kernel is the key. I'd like to see the stock kernel booting in whatever build. Dmesg will tell us what hardware do you have.

Did you also dump boot.img and recovery.img?

Thanks for your assistance, Oma. I did a dump of the original system, but only a basic one. It includes: kernel.img, backup.img, boot.img, misc.img, recovery.img, parameter, system.img. But I did that dump while the system had problems, so parts of it will still cause freeze on boot logo when flashed to other ROMs. I can not do a dmesg of the original firmware while it is running, as I can not boot into that firmware backup. I can however boot into the stock jb ROM for the Archo tablet, and then do a dmesg. Will that still be useful information? If so, let me know and I'll upload it, thanks.

Ok, pls do so.

Upload boot, recovery and system elsewhere and post the link.

Also where can I find the Archo firmware?

Ok, I ran into a brick wall, trying to save the dmesg files to the external sd (turns out its because the internal flash wasn't formatted...). But I finally got it, and the 3 dmesg files are attached to this message. (In case the attachment does not work, it can also be downloaded at this link).  n.b. They were created after booting into the stock Achos ROM, not my original Playtab ROM. The dump for all the system components that I backed up from the original Playtab ROM that you mentioned, are available in this link. The ROM I am using that works on my Playtab, but who's wifi does not work is the one in this link.

I'm surprised that "Acho" ROM does work, because it is for a 7" rk3026 with 512mb RAM, dual cams and 4GB internal flash (and I'm guessing its an 800 x 480 display). My Playtab 9.0 HD is  a 9" rk3026, with 1gb RAM, dual cams and 8gb internal flash and 1024 x 600 display.

If you can make any sense of any of this, I'd be most grateful! Wifi is a wonderful thing...

Most common wifi chip on rk3026boards is RTL8188.

Your tab has:

<4>[   44.244392] Current WiFi chip is MT7601.

Check out this build: http://www.arctablet.com/blog/forum/crewrktablets-rk3026-entwicklung-und-customroms-development-and-croms/rom-chuwi-v17pro-android-4-2-2-jelly-bean-custom-root-firmware-20140418/

Change kernel in folder rockdev/Images before flash. Install this fix via CWM.

OH MY GOD! How do I say "I love you" in German?** I got my wifi back! images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSgDK5SStTpQMzHoBM5rcO7lxinA_oJi_8xjOvMc9l1glFJMN-H After a solid week of trying, thanks to you, Oma, I finally got my wifi back! At first, I did not think this was going to work! I did everything as you instructed, except I did not install CWM. I figured I did not need to, I already had TWRP recovery, and I liked TWRP. But after I flashed the Chuwi wifi fix with TWRP, I did not get my wifi back. Then, I installed CWM, and once I did, I did not even have to re-flash the wifi fix. The wifi worked right away. On top of which, this Nexus 7 ROM of yours is wunderbar! It is the best thing this tablet has ever seen or will ever see. MUCH faster than the system the tablet came with; it has changed it into an entirely different and vastly better tablet.

Me and my three little children who will be using this as their play and education tablet thank you, Oma!

** (I'll say it with a donation to your developer fund! Danke shen!)

Oma, perhaps I spoke too soon?! The wi-fi stopped working! I'm not sure what, but something is causing it to lock up again after a while. (It's not due to the tablet going to sleep). It occured twice after using the tablet for a bit. I managed to fix it both times by doing a factory reset (it only starts working again if I erase DATA. Erasing Dalvik or app cache has no effect). I just don't know what (if anything), is triggering the wifi lock-up.

Keep in mind, I did not actually flash the Chuwi wifi fix. I simply installed CWM (in place of TWRP), and the wifi worked. I tried now to flash the Chuwi wifi fix to see if this would fix the problem. But CWM won't install it. It aborts the installation, because it can't verify the signature. I tried to turn signature verification off, but this version of CWM recovery is very basic. There appears to be just one menu, which does not include turning off MD5 signature verification.

Any idea where the problem lies?

Just follow the included instructions.

Download the model fix v17pro again and copy it to the external sdcard.

Do a clean install of the build (with your kernel), incl. eraseIDB.

First boot is into stock recovery, which will format the user partitions. Android will boot up.

Reboot into bootloader (flash-modus) and install the recovery_CWM. Load it by clicking on the empty box at the end of the line. Tick only parameter, misc, recovery.

Tab will boot into CWM. Install model fix from external sdcard.

Reboot.

Thanks. Well I followed all instructions to the letter...

(I downloaded the Chuwi fix again, full wipe, erased IDB, flashed Oma ROM with my kernel, booted into Android, let things settle, booted to bootloader, flashed CWM + parameter & misc, CWM rebooted into Android, I booted into CWM, flashed the newly downloaded Chuwi fix with "apply update from external storage".....)

.... and CWM still says "install aborted" after verifying update package.

I verified the Modell fix zip file with an MD5 checker, and it verified a proper MD5 match. Perhaps another version of CWM might work, ie. 6.0.3.1? Right now, what I know for certain is: wiping data partition fixes the problem and turning the tablet off and back on triggers the problem.

Sounds not good. Reading/verfiying after writing is not possible. Most likely a defective NAND.

We can verify that with an other layout. Pls flash again (incl. eraseIDB) with attached parameter.
