Rooted Android 4.1 Jelly Bean custom firmware based on Cube U9GT5 (U9GT V) official firmware version 1.0 (2012/10/09)

Cube build info:

Android Build date: Thu Sep 20 13:06:19 CST 2012

Kernel: Linux version 3.0.8+ (root@xingyu-desktop) (gcc version 4.4.3 (GCC) ) #41 SMP PREEMPT Fri Sep 28 15:43:02 CST 2012

Custom firmware features:

- root with SuperSU 0.96 (free version)

- writable /system partition

- removed most Chinese and unnecessary applications

- increased space for application (/data partition) to 1.5 Gb.

Rooted custom firmware for the CUBE U9GT5: kasty-cube_u9gt5-41-10-rooted2.zip

Using Rockchip Batch Tool version 1.5 to flash the firmware.

I making deleted apps available in case someone needs them: Cube_U30GT5_10_fw_removed_apps.zip

Please report any problem with this firmware, I can't verify this custom firmware works as I don't have a Cube U9GT5 to test it.

Hello, i tried your rom, apps where still in system/app:

  • QQ
  • iReader
  • UCBrowser
  • And some chinese apps.¬†

I removed them via solid explorer. Editing build.prop would also by be nice to extend market results and to tweak some things.

Thank you anyway.

Thanks for your feedback, glad to hear the custom firmware works fine.

I'll check to remove the apps you listed and the extra Chinese ones.

The build.prop modification tool is still in the works, I'll soon post when it's ready.

How do you like the U9GTV ? is the screen any good ? can you post some pictures (preferably high-def) of the tablet  ?

Cheers.

Speaking of hardware, I like the quality of the tablet, it's really well done.

Stereo speaker are cool, a lot more than previous U30GT model.

The screen is great, black are not very black (as usual with ips screens) but it's constant and NO light bleeding (at least, not on my 2 U9GT5). I m happy with the screen too.

Internal memory looks slow. Antutu can't do more than 6 megabytes per second read and 5 megabytes write. That is really weird and i fear it can impact general IO performances.

Speaking of software, it's a total mess. Of course we have Chinese apps, but we can remove them after root with basic knowledge, but the HD screen is not under control yet. Cube added in display options the ability to choose between standard and HD display. While HD make the texte verry crisp, sharp and clear, it also make the tablet very laggy. With a lot of 1/2 seconds freezes.

Note: With your rom, selecting HD display does opposite effect, and lower the definition. But since it comes pre rooted, i think it's easy to correct it in build.prop.

I also saw Cube is talking about a new firmware release on the website, but download link still points the 9 October one.

I will post picture this week end. But trust me, the visual quality looks amazing. I wish they can do the same with that laggy software, project butter, miss you bro.

EDIT: I do not recommend installing your rom so far since it breaks the resolution and we can't revert back to cube firmware, because wei need 23 hours to download it. Editing build.prop ro.sf.lcd_density doesn't fix it, unfortunately i don't know much more about android resolution/screen configuration :s

Thanks for your report, looks like a great device, looking forward to your pictures.

I've rebuilt a custom firmware based on your comments, removed some extra apps.

The updated file is here: (I will update post #1 as well): kasty-cube_u9gt5-41-10-rooted2.zip

I making deleted apps available in case someone needs them: Cube_U30GT5_10_fw_removed_apps.zip

Also, I'm leaving the default Adobe Flash Player and not using the updated one (11.1.115.17) anymore like in my first custom firmware as I am not sure it's working properly. Also /system/flashplayer app is renamed to /system/flashplayer.apk

I will include CWM in a later update.

Cheers.

Screenshot_2012-10-19-23-29-03.pngImage EnlargerIf it can help, i added a screenshot of the UI.

If you want real time tester (and developer, but i m not aware of rom cooking yet) we can use chat app as gtalk.

Note, the dpi is totally fucked up, BUT ALSO the resolution is only 1600 x 1200. Might be rk3066 related issue. Duno if you can fix it :(

PM me with you gtalk id if you re interested in a live testing session/talk.

Thank you.

EDIT: I just figured out that lag issues are only on HD mode, in normal mode it's ok. Dunno what cube tried to do here but it's so far kind of a fail. Icons, bottom bar, etc, are a big bigger on normal than in HD mode, but setting the text size to small allow us to enjoy the retina screen fluently. If i were you, i'd keep my hand out of cube mess for now, they probably know what's wrong with that HD mode and they will fix it in the next release. Until then, we can use the normal mode.

To be honest, i can't answer that question, mine is now rooted, and when i restore original firmware downloaded from cube website, it comes pre-rooted !

Thus i can say the V1 firmware from website is different from V1 firmware from factory.

Unfortunately we can not predict what firmware you will get, but in the case you get a non-rooted one, don't worry it's easy to do and it will be a pleasure to make a tutorial for you.

Well.. I hope that my will come pre-rooted..

Anyway.. Do you have a mirror for downloading the original firmware v1.0?
from here: http://www.51cube.net/ch/DownShow.asp?ID=82

I would like to have a look at the original firmware to see if there is something I can make better :)

I have built my own tools based on rktools ( https://github.com/wendal/rk2918_tools ) and few Unix utilities.

Cheers.

Hi Admin,

Have you try the ADB debugging for U9GTV?

ADB Driver installed without problem, I can use both MTP or Mass Storage, just cannot use "USB debugging".

First, I got no devices attached when type command "adb devices". After I add the 0x2207 in adb_usb.ini, it showing offline when usb connected. Any Idea?

Thanks Wink
