I tried HDMI on my cube, running this ROM 206 Kasty, connected to a cheap Tesco 1080p TV with a cheap HDMI cable. Set to the standard 1080/60hz. No stuttering rock solid. There's a slight lag between the screen and the tv (say around a quarter second).  Used MX player if that helps. I also noted that the screen timeout worked when set, which others have noted had issues. I have also installed the Xposed framework, although I'm not sure that makes any difference.

Hello,

I don't have a solution to your problem, but I'm replying since I have the same issue.

Tablet:

  • Cube U30GT2 bought 2 weeks ago from Hongkongeek
  • ROM "18 January 2014 – with overclocked kernel "T14" build, based on kernel #12 from 900supersport" installed

Monitors:

  • TV Samsung UE40C6000 and UE46C6000
  • Asus PC monitor (sorry, don't know the exact model)

As you say, everything works fine on the tablet, but the HDMI connection flickers/glitches. It seems that the HDMI signal is completely lost (video and sound) for a very brief period, and it takes 1-2 seconds to recover. This happens at any moment, if I play a movie using MXPlayer, I use Subsonic, Youtube, or simply use the tablet. I tried the following definitions:

- 1080p @ 50/60Hz: flickers every 2-3 minutes

- 720p @ 50/60Hz: flickers every 5-10 seconds (unusable)

This behavior is exactly the same on every monitor used. Unfortunately, I cannot compare with another cable or tablet since I only have one of each. Since you have the same issue, I think that the problem comes from the tablet.

Did anybody notice that with the stock ROM or any other ROM? I only tried it with my actual ROM, and I don't plan to change the ROM just to test that...

Interesting that you're using a 900supersport rom and experiencing the same problem leads me to believe that it's a hardware issue maybe a loose wire or something I ordered t2, t3 torx screwdrivers should get them in a couple of days so I'll open it up and have a look. I was going to try a 900supersport rom but no point if you have the same problem with one of his roms. Don't think it's an app causing the problem pretty lite on apps hoping I can find a solution by the weekend as I'm going away then I'd rather take the cube with me rather than having to carry my big heavy laptop around.

Well I have tried 900supersports 2.06 rom and 2.03 factory rom problem till persists. Have opened it up didn't see and obvious problems although wasn't brave enough to remove the metal cover haha. At this point in time looks like I have brought an expensive paper weight 🙁

Unrelated note:

Speed issues and lag may come from the fact that the internal storage speed of the Cube is very poor - copying files from internal storage is only 1.4MB/s. As I imagine the write speed is comparable, this would help explain the speed issues when starting apps for the first time - a 2Mb app will have a minimum load time of 1.5 seconds before it even starts executing. I imagine caching is no better.

@mr_shady, @GrosQuick

Regarding expensive paperweight where HDMI isn't working much: Do you have a TV with cast facilities? If so, try wireless display. If not (and I know it's more cost), a small dongle to plug into the TV (like a chromebox/cast, appleTV, Android plugin, Raspberry Pi, etc) may turn that TV into a device you can cast to.

Note: Please don't just buy one of the above suggestions without checking whether your device or app works with them - I haven't tried it myself so I can't confirm or deny - they're just suggestions! I've not got a TV or monitor that can cope with wireless display, but I'm building a Raspberry Pi XBMC server, so when that's done (who knows when I'll get the time!) I'll try the wireless display out.

What's being described, whereby the HDMI signal is being lost whether you're playing a movie or not, indeed sounds like a hardware problem - chances of you fixing that are minimal, so try returning if that's an option.

If it only happens when playing movies:

Have you tried playing the movie from external SD or USB storage rather than direct from internal storage? See problems above. It's unlikely but...

One last try - on 2.04 onwards, you have multi-window capability. Try turning that on, then putting your player into a small window then scaling up - some users reported that this helped with a slow framerate on Netflix.

Other than that, you know the tablet can be used for more than just playing films on a TV and holding paper down, don't you? Laugh

You want to recalibrate the battery. I can only assume you have already tried searching for "android battery recalibrate" on Google, and then installed and tried the first package that comes up, namely the NeMa battery recalibration app.

In reality, all these things do is delete a batterstats bin file. That should get deleted every time you unplug from power anyway.

Do it anyway, turn off any low power shutdown settings you have on the device, and leave the thing on until it dies. Then power up to the max, hit the recalibrate button and unplug. Do this at least twice.

Your mileage may vary - this has worked on 2 of my flashed tablets before, and epically failed to fix another one. It won't break your tablet though, so fill your boots.

@thart

Yeah 99% sure it's a hardware problem movie or not it still happens I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that's it's unfixable. Hdmi was a major reason I brought the tablet so pretty it's pretty useless to me now I'm going to sell it and buy a Pipo M9 :D if I get 2/3rds what I payed for it I'll cut my losses and take it.

I don't wanna sound rude but does anyone know how to remove the arctablet logo on bootup from kastys rom? I reckon it's a far better rom than the stock 2.03 and makes using the cube lots better so wanna flash it for the new owner so they can get a better experience out of it just be hard to explain that it's a custom rom, rooted etc to someone not so tech minded even if if makes the cube better for them best to let them think it's factory firmware lol.

I was about to say yes, then I decided to check.

Mine's on charge now - has been all day. Installed the app above and ran it - says

"Current charge: 100%, 4214mV"

It hovers around that charge (4213-4215).

Maybe mine need some love too...Confused

Start with that figure in mind, and see where you get to.

Other peeps: Can you check out the battery calibration app above and post your findings (here or to Validatus directly) please? I periodically have issues with charging my device anyway (where it switches between charging and not charging) so perhaps my device isn't the best benchmark for this.

Best of luck.

@mr_shady (why do I bother putting in the @ - anyone know? Seems pointless... Moving on...)

I bought my wife a Pipo M6 Pro (9.7in, hires screen, etc). It's a large beast and very plastic-y. Doesn't feel as well made as the Cube. Also remember that you can get exactly the same kind of build problems with any cheap Chinese tablet - had an issue with an Ainol Hero II where the socket for the external charger wasn't connected to the motherboard, so it would only charge through USB - vvvveeerrrrryyyy sssslllllooooowwwlllllyyyyyyyy.

So, you pay a small amount of money and hope you don't have build issues. Lots of people seem to enjoy both the Cube and the M9, so I think you'll be OK. See if you can get one with Pipo's proprietary launcher still on it. It's not exactly superb, but it's different enough that you may like it.

Anyway, on to the logo: You would need to rebuild the ROM to do the boot logo, or re-flash just the boot  - there's a thread on this very site that discussed changing it, if you're interested. However, bear in mind that the ROM comes rooted, which can affect the use of several apps, unless you try to hide root from them, which requires another app, and a framework, and fannying about, etc. So either sell it with full foreknowledge to the buyer that this has been updated with a custom ROM + root for their benefit, or disable root (which sometimes works) or (IMHO) stick the 2.06 Stock ROM on (rather than 2.03), and let them deal with changing from Chinese language and removing the bloat.

Now, it's a bit of a bugger to find the stock ROM, but I bet if you ask nicely enough, @DarthJabba or @Admin (there's those bloody @'s again!) will have it hanging around and can send you a link. PM them and see what they can do for you.

Personally, I'd sell it with Kasty 2.06 - or put on the Ebay listing that you'll flash it to whatever they want. Caveat emptor and all that.

Best of luck. Now get off this thread, you damn Judas! Smile

Maybe I'll try later with the 4.4, but for now, I can live with it ;) Thinking about it, the fact that the flickering frequency seems different for mr_shady and me makes me think more of a hardware issue. If it was only software, I guess it would have been reported by other users previously, and the symptoms would be very similar. Maybe a bad batch, no luck with that. Anyway, HDMI output is just a nice-to-have for me, so it's not a big deal.

@mr_shady: if the only purpose of the tablet was the streaming of videos on the TV, cheaper options are possible:

http://www.hongkongeek.com/en/151-android-tv-box

http://www.hongkongeek.com/en/150-android-tv-dongle

The most expensive of these boxes/dongles are still way cheaper than the Cube. However, I don't have any experience with that at all.

I would try KitKat for the hdmi problem before giving up completely. The KitKat 4.4.2 beta does have battery issues - but the hdmi is reasonably smooth (although I need to be where I am getting the strongest wireless signal from the router).

Anyone feel that the 4.2.2 will start to lag after some time (like 1~2 month after update) is it a problem with TRIM?

Because the unit will be very smooth in the beginning, and I haven't installed new apps since then, but then it will start be more and more sluggish after a while.

TRIM on a NAND chip? Isn't it used only on SSD disks?
I would rather say it's a placebo effect or something else at play.
