I always used the MX player on Android,  but I find it jerky on this tablet.  The BS player works perfectly for mkv 1080P. Nice and smooth. The latest version had a bit of a dispute with licenses from dolby, don't know if they've fixed that but older versions are quite easy to find.

Usually, 1080p video issue is related to WIFI as well.

You may try to play the video right next to your wifi router

Or playback directly from the storage and see what happen.

Might sound a bit daft, but you could also try disabling HDMI in the settings, on a previous tablet I had that improved playback on the device.

Hi all.

This is my first post ever on a forum.

I have the Cube U30GT2, with V2.04 firmware installed.

Generally, the tablet is fine, but as some others have reported, video playback is not always smooth for most full HD (1920x1080) clips.

The frame rate on playback is low enough to look jerky - somewhat like old, black and white silent films.

The sound playback is smooth and at the correct speed, so only the video is jerky.

I would guess the actual rate achieved is about 20 FPS, maybe lower.

The screen mode is set to playback at 100%, so there is no resizing involved.

The clips (mostly films at 23.97 FPS) are fine when played back on a pc, so they are fine.

BUT here is the curious thing - if I connect the HDMI output to an external screen, the playback on the Cube screen becomes smooth!  The playback on the external screen however is jerky.

Sounds unlikely but true. It does not seem to depend on the format of the clips, most of the ones I have tried are .mp4, some are .mkv

As soon as I disconnect the HDMI lead, playback goes back to low frame rate.I have tried the various options on the HDMI tab for screen resolution,  they do not seem to affect the results.

However, if I playback clips from Samsung Galaxy S3 phone - shot at 1920x 1080 at 30 FPS,

the playback is smooth.

Apart from poor wifi, this is all that is really bugging me about the Cube.

Incidentally, if I go to the Display tab - to change the resolution of the screen - settings stops working.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

nice observation on making playback smooth on Cube by connecting HDMI. Even though it's not something I would be willing to accept for playing video it at least it hints the root of the problem is not HW itself (unfixable). It therefore more likely points at nasty kernel/driver/Android bug. Someone on Ukrain forum posted that enabling multi-window feature and playing video back in window manually sized to fullscreen contributed in solving the jerkyness. Again, still workaround, not proper solution. Haven't had a chance to test it myself.

720p clips are affected the same as 1080p are. That said not all material is universally affected. Typical 720p H264 MKV scene rips of series and movies are affected. I've stumbled upon 1080p H264 MOV that played smooth. It's really difficult to say what the issue trigger is without testing representative variety of carefuly selected clips. Could be H264 profile, bitrate, container, FPS. I suspect 23.97 / 29.97 FPS might be the trouble. At least web streams, including Youtube HD are smooth according to my experience (aren't those 25/30 FPS by the way?).

Plus there's another less prominent issue - none of the players (BS, MX, VLC, system default, ...) i've tested was capable of deinterlacing interlaced material (SD & HD DVB-S live streams in my case). I'd expect HW decoder or video renderer would take care of that automagically. No, simply no. Lame as hell. Welcome to stone age of video processing. One more rushed, neglected, underdeveloped Android aspect to note.

I've asked whether by chance video jerkyness is fixed in 2.06 ROM but unfortunatelly noone commented on that ;-( I am quite surprised so few people are really concerned (or vocal) about this issue. Isn't perfect video playback one of the tablet's key features? Perhaps people don't care about quality experience these days anymore, sad.

As for the poor WiFi, i've managed to "fix" that by replacing my old 802.11g router (Asus) by a new 802.11n MIMO one (Mikrotik). Now I am getting strong signal (full scale mostly, full scale minus one at worst), decent transfer speeds and acceptable stability all over the appartment (including walls). Really night/day difference for me. Streaming 720p clips from NAS is piece of cake now. It's rather weird though that Cube connects at low(ish) 65mbit speed, compared to my other device (cheap Allwinner Android board without any antenna!) that connects at full 150mbit. Shame that WiFi in Cube can't take advantage of MIME WiFi technology as posted elsewhere.

Wait, you mean after you flashed it and rebooted it, it stopped at..where? The first logo, or it did not get anywhere. Why are you connecting it to the pc at all until it turns on? Do you have a fully charged battery? The USB is just for transfering files to the tablet only as far as I know you can't use it to charge or turn on the tablet.

Please tell us step by step what you are doing from pushing power button on, then what happends, do not plug usb cable on it, just power it up and tell us what happens and what do you try.

Thankfully after a lot of tries I saw green light on Rockchip batch installer, I think that it was timing issue or pure luck but anyway I manage to flash the tablet again and now is working fine. Now as for this ROM when I first activate the multiwindows feature the screen gone crazy and I couldn't even shut down the device so I did it by pressing power button constantly. When the device booted again I was able to use the multiwindow feature for a while but it start again the same behavior, so I disabled the feature again. Is this normal ?

Thanks Val, but I am happily settled with DJ's 38special(not his kernel I know) overclocked rom. No problem waking the baby nor putting it to sleep. The baby is doing well and I don't have to change the dipers until the next rom...I hope.  lol

People have reported problems with multi-windos. You might want to read through the forums titled after the latest batches of roms posted here. At to powering it off, for the cube just press down the power button and hold it until it turns off, no need to do multiple pushing of the power button. Perhaps someone who has had problems with the multi-windows might comment on it as the day wears on.

Hi All.

Thank you for your comments.

Just to clarify, I always play films and video clips from the on board Rom or micro sd card.

So there should be no bottlenecks with the source media.

The WiFi is a separate issue. My WiFi is quite good in general, my iMac will often download at around 4 MB/sec (WiFI), and my PC will sometimes manage 7 or 8 MB/sec (ethernet). Fibre optic is good!

Last night I upgraded the firmware to v2.06.

Boot times have gone back to a reasonable 30 sec - with v2.04 it had gone up to around 55 sec.

External USB sticks are now recognised properly - in v2.04, they worked but in settings>storage, the info was very sparse re the USB stick. Other media were correctly reported.

The video playback has not changed in any way that I can see. Wintermute, you were spot on re lack of

deinterlacing. Android/Cube have not cracked that one yet. I will try the BS player, and check if that offers any improvement. At the moment I use MX Player Pro and Dice, both behave similarly, inc with v 2.06 firmware. Also I will see if the HDMI o/p can be turned off altogether, and check if that offers any improvement.

Thanks for the comments/suggestions.

HDMI output can be disabled by going Settings, Hdmi, then unticking "turn on HDMI", sounds simple, but one of those ones that if you didn't know its there, you wouldn't think to use it. as an aside, turning that of when not using can also help slightly with battery performance. (or if badly implemented, help a lot with battery.)
