I don't know exactly how that works, never used it but I've seen PPP widget named many times for these kind of 3G dongle support. I'll try to give it a try with my Huawei E176G on my Cube Mini when I have some time.

I have the same problem and my cube is not root.. (is there an easy, danger free way to do it without custom roms?)
I have read there is another way to make it work, by changing some parameters in the modem itself. But then will it work for other PCs?
if anyone has the instructions please tell me.
It is easier to add the parameters in system/etc/usb_modeswitch.d which is implying having a custom firmware rather then changing the PID/VID of a modem which is much harder to do because it needs to be done in Linux, you need the Linux drivers for that modem and many other things, also you have around 50 percent rate in bricking the modem if you compile a wrong eeprom
My advice is to stick to a rooted firmware on which you have around 99 percent chance to get your device working after flashing.
