I guess this is more a problem of the partition layout on the NAND. Did you flash the Omni build incl. eraseIDB?

Is the effect with HDMI also there in tolino build v1.1?

I did not use eraseIDB. But is this really checked in the update script? If you want me to test it just say so and I'll give it another try. BTW, I detected a problem in my setup: the advanced options with WLAN are not accessible. I don't get access to "wifi direct" or "advanced settings", so I can't switch off wi-fi automatically when my Tolino is sleeping. (Not a big issue, just an info.)

This HDMI issue (scaling down to 90% due to 16:10 to 16:9 conversion even if I use a 16:9 mode) happens in all builds I've tried so far (also in the original ones). There is a zoom factor, but it's only there to make things smaller. I even edited some XML-file with values higher than 100%, but to no avail (this was with an 4.2.2 build).

Ok, then this is driven by your hardware/kernel.

The Omni build has an other partition layout. So this might be the reason why the CWM script won't run.

Hello Oma,

3) The last question is a little bit out of topic: the Tolino has a resolution of 1920x1200. When I connect it to my TV it is shrinked to 90% and displayed with black bars on the side. The visible area is 1728x1080. When I change the resolution of the Tolino to 1920x1080 the visual HDMI output is 1728x972 with black bars around it. Does anyone know how to disable this downsizing? I really liked that the Tolino has a 16:10 display, but with HDMI this is a PIA.

Bye Perilon

This one I might be able to help with:

The HDMI issue is an Android OS issue that effects every tablet with HDMI. It has existed since Android 4.2.1:

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40225

A possible (temporary) fix is listed in that link:

"Update: it looks like "am display-size" has been replaced with "wm size". However, permissions seem to have changed, so I am using adb from another computer (can't seem to run from an Android terminal emulator).

To toggle between 16:9 and 16:10 on an unrooted Nexus 10, first turn the display off and then run one of:

$ adb shell wm size reset # change to default
$ adb shell wm size 2560x1440 # change to 16:9 for use with a TV.

I suppose you could create a script that would run either whenever your android boots or whenever HDMI is connected. This, apparently, wasn't necessary before Android 4.2.1

Hello rainless,

thanks for the hint: it does not work. Changing the display to 16:9 is possible, but the output to the TV is scaled to 90%. I assume, the kernel does not care about the resolution changes. It still tries to fit 1200 lines into 1080, and if you give it 1080 lines, it will scale it down to 972 lines with black bars at the top and the bottom.

I played a little bit with "wm overscan" but it did not help either. Whatever I do, I always have black bars left and right.

I thought you had a Tolino yourself? Does it work for you? I would like to use the Tolino as a media player when I am staying in hotels, and the black bars are a little annoying. But of course still better than watching movies at the tablet itself.

Yeah I've got the Tolino. But I only have regular and mini HDMI cables... I don't have a micro HDMI cable. (Unless it came in the box and I didn't see it...)

So I can't really test. I guess I could always cut the connector from a micro usb that fits and solder the wires to a regular HDMI cable...

Here's an idea though... What if you disabled the screen before outputting to HDMI? Then it COULDN'T mirror anything because there would be nothing to mirror...

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-women-stayed-games-industry-034400191.html

"Title covers it. The stock samsung player on my galaxy tab 3.0 plays video on my HDTV at 1280x720/1920x1080 by disabling the screen (it just shows video controls, not the file playback itself).

MX player mirrors on both, but a 16:10 screen mirrored on 16:9 adds some huge black bars to the side, and screws with the aspect ratio of the video."

You could probably still use the touch screen... you'd just have to guess a bit.

i just updated from stock rom tolino89.V01.01.03.20140122 to the latest

CrewRKTablets_Odys_Iron_Omni_.4.4_v1.4.1

using the step-by-step guide posted by bloedack (post #117) and replacing the kernel with the one from the latest JB build

Oma_RK31_toliono_tab8.9_JB_4.2.2_v1.1.7z

while also doing an EraseIDB.

trying to install the model fix via cwm failed just as it did for perilon. maybe because i don't have an external sd-card ?

anyways i unzipped the model fix to the internal sd-card and used a terminal emulator and su to copy the files to their intended locations and set their permissions.

so thanks a lot Oma for giving the tolino community a new firmware to play with !

i encountered three bugs(?) up to now:

- live-preview of the camera picture is working in the camera app but not in other apps using the camera

(e.g. Fritz!App WLAN which uses the camera to scan qr-codes). this did work in the stock JB rom...

- i was very happy to see an option for full device encryption in the settings.

but setting a password and starting the encryption process does nothing.

the screen just shows the green android on black background without any kind of progress meter.

even after several hours nothing happens and i believe the device is still not encrypted :(

- when choosing "performance" ("leistung") in the settings app the app crashes/closes.

any ideas ?

cheers !

@perilon: advanced wifi settings are working fine here...

Hey. Getting ready to FINALLY install OmniRom. But before I do (now that I helped at least get us the latest Tolino rom) I want to see if there's anyway I can help us get GPS working on OMNI with the Tolino?

I know the wifi drivers were different and had to be added to OMNI so shouldn't there be a way to add a module or driver for the GPS as well?

It would be useful to me for drone piloting and things of that nature.

Once I'm updated I can help Oma and perilon workout some of the few remaining kinks.

http://teckfront.com/keep-wi-fi-sleep-android-4-4-4-kikat-devices/

Finally got a chance to update. Advanced wi-fi settings working just fine. (See link above: Maybe you just don't recognize the new icon? There's a burger menu of three boxes to the right of the refresh and add icons. Mine appeared at the top of the wi-fi menu instead of at the bottom.)

INSTALL NOTES:

1. After EraseIDB the device automatically rebooted itself (I did NOT see that coming), right back into the JB rom. I had to wait for it to finish booting, turn it off, and boot BACK into the loader to continue flashing. That... was kinda weird.

Other notes:

1. Screen sort of "freaks out" when rotating the device. The screen glitches out for a second then restores itself. This sometimes happens even when you're NOT rotating the screen.

2. No problems at all, so far, with the wi-fi. Rock solid.

3. System was UNBELIEVABLY slow before changing the entropy. Now it's a little bit better.

4. CWM appears to be working just fine although I wish there was a way it could read the internal memory. Fortunately I have dozens of microSD cards.

Questions:

1. How do you switch back to "Installer" mode from "MTP" mode? (USB)

2. Is there a way to get the GPS working on OMNI-ROM?

3. What are OMA's recommended settings for OMNI-Rom on this tablet?

That about covers it for now. I haven't been able to probe too deeply. But I had absolutely no problems at all with the install. I'm guessing the people that have had problems either had bad NANDs or were flashing the wrong things to the wrong places.

Also I can confirm that the camera is ONLY working in the camera app.

Another bug: When in landscape mode, in the app drawer, if you try to hold an app to drop it on the homepage... the screen just starts spinning... around and around... this doesn't happen when holding the tablet in portrait.  Really weird... but whatever.

1) "advanced options with WLAN are not accessible"
When I rebooted the tablet, the problem was gone. And I did not encounter this problem again.

2) "camera is ONLY working in the camera app"
The quality of the camera is so bad I did not really bother to test it with other apps until now. I just gave "barcode scanner" a try, and it does not work. So I can confirm the camera problem, too.

3) "GPS"
I was never able to get a GPS-fix with the original android version on the Tolino (not really intensive tests, but a comparsion with other smartphones). So even if Oma is able to deliver the drivers for GPS, is it really worth the effort? GPS seems not to be a strong point ot the Tolino.

4) "When in landscape mode, [...] the screen just starts spinning"
I never stumbled over this bug, but yes, it's the same with me.

Overall I am still quite satisfied. OMNI-ROM is really stable, and the above problems are only small nuisances. What rainless describes as "Screen sort of "freaks out" when rotating the device" is the problem which is most obvious because you encounter it every time you change the orientation (I can't remember other cases). But is it really a showstopper? I think not.

BTW: I am still interested in finding a solution to get rid of the black bars in the HDMI output. So if someone was able to get a full screen on HDMI output, please report it here.

Bye, perilon

Oh I agree that none of the bugs are really "deal-breakers"... but they're still bugs. I guess the camera thing is probably the most critical because... whether you personally use the camera or not... it's kind of a pain in the ass if you can't even scan a QR code with the damned thing.

And the glitches with the screen being distorted when changing orientation, and the screen spinning when holding an app in the application bar in landscape mode are both annoying and they slow me down.

I don't think any of it is unfixable though. The camera bug, for instance, I suspect might've been introduced because camera preview was always flipped upside down before Oma made a fix for it.

I'm thinking that fix probably screwed it up for other apps.

But evetually they'll get around to fixing all of it.

Just noticed a new problem:

Screenshots not working.

I get the error "couldn't capture screenshot. Storage may be in use."

Apparently somebody was able to fix this in another version of Omnirom:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48802397

  • You may need to format data for ROM to boot. **This is very rare anymore but still may be a problem**
  • **By formatting you will delete TWRP backups. So backup your media because you will loose it.
  • No screenshots as of yet "couldn't capture screenshot. storage may be in use." error. No longer an issue
  • You will loose Root go here (chainfire's SuperSU) for flashable zip.

I have Oma_RK31_toliono_tab8.9_JB_4.2.2_v1.1 on my tablet, i noticed that usb hub is properly recognized but mouse after pluged in dont working, there is a problem with using mose or keyboard in otg mode with Y otg cable ( tablet is charging but mouse didnt work, tested with different resistors). It seems that these functions were limited by software, whether it is possible to fix this?
