Hello. Just wanted to check what the current advice is to get Google Play (really for me just market apps) installed on an Arnova device.
Â
Looking at the forum there is "Gerry's package" to download from late last year, and then instructions about how to install the various files onto a device. But is this still valid/current now that Google Play is around ?
I also see there's another thread regarding the announcement/conversion to Google Play that has links to new .apk files and a comment implying that if you already have the market place installed - using Gerry's package and instructions I assume - things should just update automatically, but you can install these .apk files manually if you want (except where Honeycomb is required).
So questions
1) Is anyone successfully using Google Play (Market) on their Arnova/Archos device ?
2) If so, what's the current recommended method to get this up and running - still use Gerry's package and then upgrade ?
thanks

Hi
IÂ have been using "Gerry's package" for the 3.4.4 market succesfully on the Arnova10g2Â since he released it on here.
Though it still shows as Google Market rather than Google Play. Downloading and installing apps i have had no problems at all.
Gerry tried the new Google Play update apk but found it force closed when downloading any app.
Hope this helps.
Ian

Thanks Ian.

Also, to try and avoid any duplication I've caused, I should let you know I found this thread which has a video and gives more details on installation.

OK I've followed all the intstallation steps which went through no problem. No cache to clear but I deleted data as directed, however sadly  I now consistently get "Couldn't establish a reliable data connection to the server - this could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues call customer care." when trying to login using my gmail or google account.  Of course the Arnova 8 G2 isn't provisioned for data services, but others seem to have got this to work, so anyone know what to do next ?
thanks
This error sometimes happen, a fix that usually works is to install Arctools application (from Appslib or here), start Arctools, in the application press "Reset Market" button, then confirm "Allow button" each time Superuser request access (should happen 4 times). When done, reboot immediately your tablet and restart Google Play/Android Market after it has rebooted.
What this procedure does is that it just erases Android Market and related app settings and data.

Once again, thanks for the quick reply.Â
I gave Arctools a go, it installed no problem from Appslib, but on pressing the "Reset Market" button I didn't get an "Allow Button" dialog at all just 4 messages saying "Clearing data/data/..." with the last of the 4 being "Clearing data/data/com.google.android.gsf" and then "error 104: Reset Market failed, no root access ?"
This is an Arnova 8 G2, as delivered, with Android 2.3.1 Build Gingerbread.eng.20110903.152730 Kernel 2.6.32.27
thanks
I assumed (incorrectly) that you were running a custom firmware, which would allow this procedure because of the root access.
This actually does not work on the default firmware from the manufacturer, you can eventually purge data and cache on the Market like here:Â http://www.arctablet.com/blog/archos-tablet/google-android-market-full-access-fix/Â but there is little chance it would work. I am afraid that using a custom firmware is currently the most reliable way to install Android Market on an Arnova G2 device.

Sorry you to hear you are having probs with the market.
Here is the full video that Gerry made for the installation of the market. It gives very clear info as to what to do.
Â
Hope it helps you.

Thanks for the link to the video. In fact that shows exactly the steps I have followed - which I got from written text on the forum - except for the last couple of actions after Gerry manages to login to his gmail account. Â
The problem for me is that the login to gmail never works for me on this device - a non-rooted Arnova 8 G2. Looks as though as Admin says, the only way I'm going to get this to work is to install some custom firmware, even though posts elsewhere suggest that that isn't necessary.Â
