Hi, I'm new here. Just picked up a 7f a couple of days ago and have been enjoying it after flashing the Arctools firmware, which was a breeze, thanks for that.

So the only trouble I'm having at this point is with calendar sync, which simply doesn't work at all. I've done some searching here and elsewhere and it seems like this is a common problem, lots of people on lots of devices where everything else syncs with no problems, but either calendar or contacts or both are not happening. In my case contacts are fine, but calendar, not so much.

I did try to follow through some of the how-to procedures but have not had much luck, so I'm wondering if anyone has better or more specific suggestions as to where to get compatible versions of whatever files are needed (Calendar.apk? CalendarStorage.apk? GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk) and how to make sure they get installed correctly. For example, following instructions found here I have versions of these three files and have tried to install them but am unable to get GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk to install, and if I try to turn on calendar sync it tells me that Calendar Storage has stopped.

Thanks in advance, any help on this is appreciated!

Tobias,

I have good news for you, I've made an update on the custom firmware, Contacts and Calendar work fine for me.

http://www.arctablet.com/assets/firmware/Arnova7G3/kasty-arn7fg3-40-042.zip

Basically, I've added Calendar.apk, CalendarProvider.apk, Contacts.apk, ContactsProvider.apk as system apps, having them as user apps which happens when you sideload the APKs does not seem to work with those apps...

EDIT: you'll need to flash it with Rockchip flasher, as this test firmware isn't setup in Arctools yet.

Let me know how it works for you.

Cheers.

That is definitely good news and much appreciated, I was kind of at my wits' end as my technical knowledge does not extend that far into droidland. I'm downloading it now while looking into how to use this Rockchip Flasher of which you speak... looks like fun! Anyway I will certainly report back if/when I have a result or lack thereof. Thanks again for devoting some time and attention to this, if it works out well I will try to swing a bit of a donation...

Thanks for your words Wink

The key combination with Rockchip flasher to get the 7f G3 into flash mode is Reset pinhole and Vol+. If you're having troubles with the flasher, I can still include the firmware in Arctools for a short time, so you can download and test it easily. Still, it's a good thing to have a working setup with Rockchip flasher as it's the ultimate tool to bring your tablet back to life in case something goes wrong.

Cheers.

Thanks, it probably would have taken me a few times to figure out the key combination by trial and error. I've downloaded the Flasher (despite my computer's objections that it is 'not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous') and am almost finished downloading the firmware file, but if it's possible to do it through Arctools that is certainly easier for me. How would I go about getting my Arctools installation to find the firmware file? I'll continue with the Flasher procedure unless I hear back from you... thanks again!

I need to activate the new firmware on the server so you can see it in Arctools.

I'll do it (probably tomorrow morning) if you have problems with Rockchip flasher, but I let you give it a try, should be no big deal to get it to work.

Cheers.

OK I'm definitely missing something, I cannot get my unit to do anything other than boot up normally. I'm following the directions as closely as I can but it just starts up normally every time. So for the moment I can't proceed as I can't get the unit into flashing mode... I'll try a couple more times - is it possible that this unit uses the power button, not the volume button? - and then I need to get some sleep and I'll look for the firmware on Arctools in the morning...

Hello Tobias,

I've added the test update (0.42) in Arctools firmwares, in case it's easier for you.

Please let me know how it goes...

Cheers.

Hi. First, thanks again for that - I ran the update through Arctools; it was not so much easier for me as possible, since I couldn't for the life of me get my unit into flashing mode; I'll work on that some more I guess.

Anyway the update seems to have worked, I now have a working Google calendar app which I didn't have before (I tried to sideload it before but it would crash on opening) BUT calendar sync is still not working at all, strangely. If I enable it on the Settings>Accounts&Sync page under my account it tries and then says 'sync is currently experiencing problems, it will be back shortly' which is all it's ever said. And in Calendar (or any other calendar app, I've tried a few) no calendars are listed, so they can't really do anything.

So I guess there's something else going on here. I've read elsewhere that there's a bug in the 4.0x code that causes some recurring events to crash the calendar sync process, so I've removed all of those from my calendar, but still no luck. I'll keep plugging away at that, maybe try to reset / rename / delete the calendar or remove all entries, I don't know. It's kind of frustrating as I'm basically satisfied with everything else.

But thanks for your help so far!

It's very possible that your previous tries getting Calendar/Contacts to work created some problems.

If possible you should reset your tablet and flash the firmware from an "empty" tablet, go to Settings / Backup & Reset / Factory data reset. Then reload Appslib after the tablet is reset, http://appslib.com/download/index.html

then you can download again Arctools, the firmware and flash it.

It worked from me on a reset tablet, it should work for you too...

Cheers.

Something I think may be a clue is that, under Settings>Accounts&Sync>my account as per above, all the different things I can turn sync on or off for are kind of 'english word' versions, i.e. Browser, Contact, Currents, Docs, Notes etc - and they all work... all except calendar, which is not 'Calendar' but 'com.android.calendar' (possibly there's more, it cuts off there). Is this normal? Should it not just say 'Calendar' or 'Calendars'? Maybe it's a red herring but it kind of strikes me as odd that the one that doesn't work also looks different.

Also possibly relevant, I use Google Tasks quite a lot, mostly through an app called GTasks, and it syncs just fine, even though theoretically it appears to be part of the overall calendar system. Could this be causing a conflict?

Aha, sorry, I just saw this. That's probably a reasonable suggestion. I'm going to try to figure out how to backup apps and data first, so I don't have to reinstall everything one by one.

Yep, that worked. Yay! Now I will carefully begin to restore apps and such.

In sync settings, it now says 'Calendar' instead of 'com.android.calendar' so there was something to that hunch.

Anyway, thanks again for the custom firmware and the assistance, happy endings are nice.

Have a great day...

That's great you got it sorted Wink

I'm removing the Arnova 7f G3 firmware download version 0.42 in Arctools, I'll wait for your feedback to permanently add it back.

Cheers.

OK, no problem. Seems fine so far, I'm just getting everything installed again, haven't found any stumbling blocks yet but I'll drop another line in a day or so when I've used it enough to be more certain. Did you change anything else?

And a related question, what would you say are the odds of seeing a Jellybean update at some point once that is out and relatively stable? Possible? Probable? Pipe dream? ...

thanks again
