I had the same problem, though of course my solution may not work for you.
I was using a 3 sim (UK); they told me I needed a tablet sim, not a mobile phone sim. The 3 tech support gave me some different APN settings to try,
When I got the new sim, it still wouldn't work (it registered on the network, but was disconnected for data). As a last resort before sending it back, I did a factory reset, and the 3G icon appeared, and it's worked ever since.
The APN, taken I suppose from the SIM, was different from any that the tech support had suggested.
Everything is working fine now.
