Hi all,

I'm getting the 8Gb capacitive version of the 7b G2 at some point next week from here:

http://www.ebuyer.com/348957-archos-arnova-7b-g2-tablet-pc-501813

Just wondering if it would help if I did a dump for you? I'd like to do one anyway so I can restore it if I end up bricking it.

Slight problem, I'm a complete rooting n00b! I have looked at the wiki entry for dumping (http://wiki.archosfans.com/index.php?title=Dump_your_Home_Tablet_rom_and_create_a_custom_rom) but I'm confused about a few things:

1) Do I presume I need to install and use z4root and a terminal application on the tablet itself (and not through the adb shell)?

2) Do I just need to dump the backup partition for recovery purposes? Presumably I need all the others (bar user) to create custom roms?

3) Do I need to run rkdump from the terminal application mentioned above or from an adb shell?

4) If I do need to do any of the above from adb do I need to put the tablet into recovery mode first, or is that just to get the update.img onto a bricked tablet to reflash it?

Cheers.

Arnova 7b G2 capacitive, that would be great to have a dump for this tablet.

1/ z4root does not work on Arnova G2s, you'd better use Gingerbreak, knowing it's working quite randomly.

You'll install the application and run it as such.

2/ You'll just need to dump the backup.img partition, having boot.img and system.img too would be a plus.

3/ rkdump should be run for the command line in an adb shell.

4/ recovery mode not needed, you'll do it all in a regular mode, after the tablet is (temporarly) rooted

You'll find some more info about the process here: http://www.arctablet.com/blog/forum/arnova-9-g2-firmware-version-and-password-protection/willing-to-try-rooting-this-model/

There's actually a better way to make a firmware dump, but you will need to switch the tablet in flash/recovery mode.

The scripts are made by Steve (ttz642t on the forum here) and run on Linux:

Thanks for the info.

Is there any way to get temp root access on the tablet? I note that Gingerbreak changes quite a lot to get permanent root and I'd rather be able to get an unmodified dump if possible.

Gingerbreak won't give you more than a temp root, as the system is in CRAMFS file system (read only) so it can't be modified.

If Gingerbreak doesn't work, can I just use an10g2_dump.pl with rkflashtool from a linux machine? Presumably the device doesn't need to be rooted to do that because it works in recovery mode?

Edit: Sorry, I note you already mentioned this. I guess I'll do it with the above dump tool as it doesn't need root and saves me messing around with gingerbreak.

I'll be getting mine on Monday so I'll do the dump first thing after charging it and making sure it works ok. I'll reply here with the files for verification from the experts.

By the way, where's the best place to upload the dump? I can drop it on an Amazon S3 bucket and leave it for a week or so (but it might end up costing me a fortune if loads of people download it). Alternatively I can upload it to S3 and then distribute the torrent link for it if people agree to seed it after downloading?

It might take a while to upload as I'm on the event horizon of actually getting broadband (I'm quite a way from the exchange and we don't have FTTC yet) so I get about 440/350kbps down/up, so it might not be available until Tuesday morning GMT.

You can use our uploader here: http://www.arctablet.com/blog/at-upload/

Please zip the file prior to uploading, so the integrity is easier to check.

Thank you.

"File limit: 250 Mb (mega bytes)"

Will a full, zipped dump be smaller than this?

Dump weight usually less than 100 Mb.

When needed, I'll increase the upload limit.

Thanks to domrad for posting the dump here: http://www.arctablet.com/blog/forum/arnova-7b-g2/7b-g2-capacitive-dump-files/

I've added domrad's Arnova 7b G2 capacitive firmware dump to our firmware Kitchen.

Please test domrad's firmware and report if it's working.

Also, I've made a custom firmware with Android Market (now Android Play Store) and root.

Let me know if it works fine for you:
