Keyboard for Arnova 7 G2?

I've looked through various threads about the use of USB keyboards on here and elsewhere, but am I right in thinking that if the Arnovatech.com web-site clearly states that the 7 G2's USB port is a 'slave only' then connecting a keyboard, which I take to also be a slave won't work. It's particularly confusing since Amazon claim to have a leather case including a USB keyboard listing the 7 G2 as compatible. I'm guessing they're wrong?

Arnova web site is probably right and the micro USB port has no host feature. Assuming it's correct, the device won't accept an USB keyboard. I'll try to verify it.

Bluetooth keyboard won't do either as the Arnova 7G2 do not have bluetooth connectivity.

Yeah, I already tried a bluetooth set up using an iPazzport just to prove the method, but got nowhere. I figure that the USB port, being a slave isn't set up to power anything like the bluetooth dongle, so it's not looking too promising.

Tried it with a female to female adaptor and my regular USB keyboard - doesn't work. I imagine that you'll have more luck with an OTG cable though, as 3G dongles and bluetooth dongles have been confirmed working with these.

I just tried to connect a keyboard thru an OTG cable (the one made by Archos), it did not work.

I can't find any setting to enable USB Host mode, not sure if it's a device limitation as I mentionned earlier or if it's a software/firmware issue.

Having just also added a 10 G2 to my arsenal, and found that the full size USB does accept a keyboard, I tried my new OTG USB lead in the 7 G2. I now find to my amusement that a keyboard DOES work with it. However, the on -screen keyboard doesn't go away on either machine. The keyboard was a pretty standard Microsoft model with full sized USB. Both tablets have the latest firmware. Separate mice also seem to work. As soon as I get home next week gonna start experimenting with cordless keyboard / mouse combos although I'm not holding my breath as the dongle will need to be powered - which is another story!

Hi Billynibbles,

I've just received my Arnova 7 g2 yesterday off of Amazon and I ordered a Keyboard to go with it as well (advertised by Amazon to work with it) but alas mine does not work.

Can I ask where you got your OTG USB cable from? I got mine off of eBay, hoping a different one may make a difference?

Is your 7 G2 running the firmware from Arnova or a custom one?

If anyone has any advice as to how to get a keyboard working i'd sure love to hear it, it was one of the only reasons I got one because I can use it for note taking.

Hi there, Greenow182, my 7 G2 only runs the normal stock firmware although my 10 G2 now has some non-standard firmware running. Both work fine with a keyboard - I've sent you a link to an OTG lead that I know works in your other post on the subject.

Amazon has a quite nifty generic leather-look case with built-in keyboard for 7" tablets for £9.83 at the moment although you will need that OTG lead, partly to make the 7 G2 accept a keyboard and partly to act as a step-down adapter from full size USB to microUSB. You may find that the wide-screen format of the 7 G2 makes it rather a loose fit but I always think there's nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of self-adhesive Velcro!

I've ordered something similar for my 10 G2 from Amazon, but didn't notice that it was being sourced from China, so much as I'd love to report on how it works, three weeks later I still haven't got it!

Thank you for the links.

I've ordered the OTG cable so hopefully that will make the keyboard work. The keyboard I have is actually the one you shared the link for.

Really hope it works! I'll let you know when I've tried it.

The OTG USB arrived this morning and it's working fine with the keyboard! Thanks again for the link!

Wondering if it's possible to get a USB splitter and hook a mouse up to it as well now, that's my next thing to try!

Good news indeed. Thanks for the update. Well the microUSB port, once connected via an OTG lead certainly does seem capable of supplying at least some power, as memory sticks and my cordless keyboard with built-in mouse pad which needs a dongle also work so you may well get away without having to fit a powered USB hub.

Hi Billy,

How did you find the 7G2 fit with the case from amazon?  Been thinking of ordering one myself.

and it fits nicely to the 7G2 iamapc?  the tablet used in the advert looks to be alot bigger overall then the 7g2 is (the border around the screen looks huge).
