If the manufacturer isn't recognized, have you done all the steps to install ADB as in the link of my post above (without errors)?

I attempted the first installation of drivers, but I could not see how and where they might go... A look at my device manager on the PC showed that everything was installed with no errors...

The initial instructions "the separate inf file that will need to be placed in the unzipped 'usb drivers' folder." doesn't actually tell me where that folder might be, nor how I get that part done, so I'm a little lost there..

Could you explain where and how I am supposed to install extra drivers, and what the results should be, step by step.. Please imagine that you are talking to a small girl whilst doing so, as if I fail I will employ the services of my daughter to try to do the job for me...

Truly I need to root this idiot thing, as I have heard that it is only through rooting that i MIGHT be able to get the tablet to write to the external sd card (something the manufacturers have conveniently blocked)

Thanks

In fact, I don't have a rooted device (yet) and I can use an external SD card... but for the installation:

If you download: adb_winusb_driver.zip in this page:

http://www.arctablet.com/blog/featured/adb-driver-update-for-archos-arnova-devices/

you can unzip the folder. Inside that you've got a file named android_winusb.inf

This is the same file that you download on the same webpage and that you replace with the new one downloaded.

Affter you've installed that manually (do exactly what is written step by step on this webpage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413293 )and if everything is okay, when you do :

"adb devices" in a command prompt (windows+R -> type "cmd"), does it show your device?

Okay, I must have some kind of idiot problem my end, because I still do not understand. Your instructions about installing the other .inf files seems a little unclear, as I do not know where or how I should be installing them..

I have found the following things:

under device manager/ Disk Drives I see "AN10CG3 ARMOVA USB DEVICE" which is listed twice..

Under / Portable devices, I also see "Arnova"

Any attempt to upgrade my drivers by attempting to install the downloaded .inf files, results in the system informing me that the necessary drivers are already installed...

using the command prompt, and entering the term "adb devices" gives the result that dos does not recognize the command..

Lastly I have no idea how you can write to your external sd card with an un-rooted machine, as the techs at Arnova inform me that it is deliberately disabled. please tell me what you use to make new folders etc..

Idiot proof instructions would be greatly appreciated...

Many thanks :)

Hello this is a tutorial on how to install and use adb http://www.arctablet.com/blog/devices/arnova/adb-and-fastboot-tutorial/
He have already explained hundreds of times the "howto" process, just use search option with keywords like "how to flash" "adb"

Please inform us about the results after the tutorial given by Globula_neagra. :)  There aren't a lot of FamilyPad 2 users here I would be happy to know whether the rooting works for someone!

According to your messages (but i think you will not have them if you follow the tutorial above) it seems:

-you are connected in USB mode, not debug mode, aren't you? You must choose in "setting", "developer option", "and tick "debug mode".

-if the "adb" command is not recognized, it's because you didn't set the PATH in windows (as written in the tutorial.

If you know how to use linux, you can dump your firmware, and we will build a rooted firmware from it.

Hello, I'm back after a little moment. Is there something new about rooting the FamilyPad (1 or 2) for some people here?

@glubula_neagra : I know linux as a newbie (I'm actually on Lubuntu 13 now) but don't know how do you dump. Which tutorial can I follow?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Thank you. Worked with Windows XP.

Also added a file manager:

ES  File Explorer    3.0.6.0 (3.92 MB)
ES Task Manager   v1.4.2 (0.7 MB)
From:  http://www.estrongs.com/

Added USB support with info from this post:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11183792/android-usb-host-and-hidden-devices

This involved adding the file android.hardware.usb.host.xml
to directory Device/system/etc/permissions.

Adding, to file  "tablet_core_hardware.xml" (in same permissions directory) the line:

<feature name="android.hardware.usb.host" />

Note: It's probably a delicate affair to temporarily erase the "tablet_core_hardware.xml". What

if you were accidentally to shut down the tablet, how would it restart?

I had the modified file ready in the Downloads folder. Erased the original "tablet_core_hardware.xml",

ES file explorer crashed, heart skipped a beat. Restarted ES file explorer, copied the new "tablet_core_hardware.xml" from the Downloads folder to the permissions directory, and all was well.

Result: It's now possible to write code (that works) for USB Host. I have only briefly tested it to see

how it actually acts as a host. Here are the devices I had available:

Lexar 32GB memory stick: Did not recognize it before, does not recognize it now

CF card reader: Recognized it before, recognizes it now

So no changes there.

Attached are also copies of the original and modified "tablet_core_hardware.xml" files, and

a picture of the USB OTG cable I'm using. Bought 3 different cables till I received this one

that worked. Apparently some cables advertized as OTG are nothing but straight through

adapters, without the connection between pins 4 & 5 on the mini connector's side.

June 2016. My father gave me an old but unused Arnova Familypad, Android 4.0.3, no updates or compatible firmware available. Even 4.1.2 would be better but there's nothing. This root procedure worked perfectly. The link for rootburner is offline but if you do this Google search:

rootburner_v0.2.zip  4shared

You will find the file. I checked it first on virustotal, you should also before running it. It's important to wait for Windows to recognize the tablet at each stage before continuing or you might receive an error.

Thanks to the author for a great procedure! Cool
