Hi,

I am not very used to rooting so I'd like to understand why I need to flash my firmware with /blog/featured/arnova-10b-android-2-2-froyo-firmware-market-root-kasty/ if the only thing I want is to be root. For example, I do not want froyo. I do not want more performance (I am ok with defaults)

I need to be root so that I can install and manipulate the iptables.

Can someone provide me an explanation ?

im not very familiar with this device but have you tried rooting with apps such as z4root and oneclickroot? you can get z4root from here

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953 you can download it at the bottom of the page then copy it ontu your device by usb then open it in your device via files it will then install. read the link for more info

z4root should work on the Arnova 10b, it will give you a temporary root, as /system fs in cramfs type and can't be modified (read only)

I test z4root and it effectively does not work in permanent mode.

From what you said (/system in ramfs), I deduce that it is impossible to be permanently root withtout using another firmware. Is that correct ?

Try just temporary rooting it

I manage to root it temporarily.

this is not what I want to achieve.

I want to install an app that needs root privileges at boot time (i.e droidwall).

So I really need to be root permanently.

Does this mean I have to install the firmware of http://www.arctablet.com/blog/featured/arnova-10b-android-2-2-froyo-firmware-market-root-kasty/  ?

As Alex, I confirm you would need a custom firmware to have root at boot time and some files in /system.

Furthermore, I think Droidwall uses netfilter which I believe is not built in Arnova 10b kernel... need a module for it, I think there are some for RK2818 machines on dev. sites (XDA, Slatedroid) ...

Thank you all for your answers.

I'll try droidwall and see if it works under arnova 10b. If not, I'll try the custom firmware.

The reason why I do not want to use a custom firmware is because I want to code an app that will be compatible with arnova 10b and that will need to block the network traffic.

I dont want my users to install a custom firmware to use it.

If you have any idea to block the network wihtout something like droidwall (i.e iptables), please share 😉

Effectively, iptables does not work even with the custom firmware.

Do you know another way to block network without iptables under the arnova10b ?

I don't know about any other low level option.

If you are a developer, you can have a look at existing CyanogenMod7 port work for RK2818 based tablets: https://github.com/naobsd/cm_device_rockchip_rk2818

Still, it's unfinished work.
