So I am a current 16 YO student currently doing maths And IT, I have been thinking about getting a tablet, so I walked into my local PC world and looked at what they had to offer. One of the first ones i saw was the 10b G3, I was amazed at the price and the features, although the lack of Google play was a problem until i found out about the custom firmware that was on this site (so thanks). So would the 10b G3 4GB be a decent buy for the following?

- General light internet surfing.

- Watching the odd film and listening to music.

- Doing some scripting work

- Social networking- twitter, Facebook etc.

The Arnova 10b G3 should fit most of these needs, but is just a small evolution of the older 10 G2 that you probably get cheaper  (discounted or second hand) and which could also work for you.

Both models are OK for web surfing, but may be a little slow on complex pages with heavy flash content.

Movies are OK on both, the 10b G3 is a little limited in battery life (less than 3 hours) and the speaker doesn't play very loud.

Social network stuff should be OK, but you'll probably need a keyboard. You'll need to hook one thru USB as the Arnova do not support Bluetooth. The 10 G2 has the advantage of offering a full size USB port, so you don't need an OTG USB cable.

If you aren't into games or cpu hungry apps these should be OK, else it's best to check other models such as the Archos G9 or other brands...

Cheers.

I have just been reading reviews of various Archos/arnova tablets and they all say the build quality is quite poor. To what extent is this true and is it a major issue?

Well you get what you pay for.

I'd say if I was buying again I'd spend an extra £50-£100 for the next step up. The 10b G3 is OK for the price and what I want it for (light internet surfing) but it definitely has it's downsides:

- battery life - not good if you want it to watch films

- laggy inputs - just typing into any web form is pretty slow, I have to slow myself down to let the input catch up with me

- jittery youtube - watching clips on YT and the video jitters around pretty bad, not sure if this would also be a problem for watching movie files on the internal memory

Just a question about laggy inputs - did you try turning off the keyboard sound in the settings? It could improve the keyboard perfomance a little bit. 😉

Yeah I did that - can't stand sound on every single keypress 🙂

I also installed a keyboard replacement - Smart Keyboard Pro - which helped a little.
