2 random questions...

Even after a fresh reflash (I just upgraded to the new root rom with google market) there seems to be alot of storage ram being taken up, there's only like 60MB or so free? Seems like alot? My phone with gingerbread is only using about 90MB on a fresh flash vs almost 200MB for this tablet?

My wifi antenna seems fairly bad? I can be sitting right next to an access point and I'm only at half strength. I've tried quite a few wifi access points and its the same, doesn't matter where it is I always seems to not get good strength.

Anyone notice these issues?

On the forum Arnova 10 G2 first custom firmware with Android Market and root i posted about a message popping up saying low internal storage just waiting for a reply, read my post about it to see if its the same problem as what I am having. My wifi seems ok even though the wifi meter never shows full strength I still get fast browsing both upstairs and downstairs.

Maybe the wifi meter is not reading signal strength properly

This tablet has 8gb of storage ram, but the programs get put in main ram not storage ram, until you move then to SD card, and then only part of the app goes to sd card. Main ram is 512mb. Half of that is for the OS and programs, the other half is for running programs. The second half where you run apps is pretty free, I think over 200mb free. The OS area was only about 60 mb free, so once you throw a few apps in there you get the storage low warning until you go in and move those apps to SD card, but even then, the room available seems pretty low to me...

My wifi does seems to work good enough, Its not slow, I was just wondering why it would read low signal strength, if I look at the connection it shows it being connected at 36mbs alot of times instead of the normal 54mbs. And this is when i'm about 3 feet from the access point. Odd, but nice to know that others are seeing this too..

thanks for that information on reading on some other sites a problem could be down to cache of programs taking up internal storage so I am going to try App cache cleaner off the android market to free up some space. I have installed app2sd and moved the apps I could to the sd card.

I also read that Titanium back up could move system apps like gmail ets to the sd card and remove other stuff off the device, I going to try that but use with caution as I am a newbee to android.

Great suggestion damo! I had no idea Titanium backup could be used to move stubborn apps to the sd card. I have managed to free up lots more space now. I do agree that storage is limited on this device, Titanium backup reports;

System ROM 259MB
Internal 259MB
SD Card 15.8GB

I have no idea why it can't see the 4GB of internal storage though. Would an openAOS/Cyanogen mod firmware address this issue? I haven't heard of anything in development though.

Credit to the makers of this firmware, I dont think the limited storage space is down to them but bearing in mind this is a first release lets hope that some progress can be made on this subject.

Android apps get installed to /data partition.

In current custom firmware this partition size is limited to about 247 Mb.

I will have a look on how to increase it, any idea is welcome.

Just tried using the Titanium Backup to move all those apps installed on /data partition to SD card and it works! overall performance can feel a little bit slower than before but is acceptable, now my Arnova 10 G2 got 43 apps installed and luckily the internal storage still have 70MB free.

In Titanium Backup, goto the Backup/Restore tab, browse through the app and long press on it for about 1 second, a popup menu will be displayed, then choose Move the app to SD card - it's that easy! [Image Can Not Be Found]

Meanwhile, I think there are scripts within the firmware with parameters assigning the partition size during update firmware process, anyone experts please see if it can be modified to increase the /data partition size or just create the /data mount point over the internal storage /mnt/storage. That's exactly what I am trying to modify, so far with not much success.

I'll keep you guys updated with that modification, any input is welcome.

How about simply swapping the internal partitions for /data & /mnt/storage ? Best done by custom firmware.

Also has the advantage of using just internal storage and no need for link2sd or app2sd !

IE in the boot process which mounts the partitions swap :

   /dev/block/mtdblock7 with /dev/block/mtdblock9

&  /dev/block/vold/31:9 with /dev/block/vold/31:7

Just copy the relevant files from the /data partition before rebooting.

# cat proc/mtd
dev:    size   erasesize  name
mtd7: 10000000 00004000 "userdata"
mtd9: b4400000 00004000 "user"

# busybox df -h
Filesystem                Size      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/block/mtdblock7    247.9M    206.5M     28.6M  88% /data
/dev/block/vold/31:9      2.8G    131.2M      2.7G   5% /mnt/storage

Thanks for your suggestion.

Remapping the partitions to have larger app. storage in the works, so far without success.

We'll keep you updated.

Another idea is to mount onto the internal storage partition during boot. Link2SD works, edited /data/data/com.buak.Link2SD/files/init-link2sd.sh file BUT doesn't get invoked early enough so fails and requires a soft reboot otherwise the apps are missing.

Any chance of adding:

mkdir /data/sdext2  #unless it exists

mkdir /mnt/storage/sdext2   #unless it exists

busybox mount -o bind  /mnt/storage/sdext2 /data/sdext2

Just after /data gets mounted ?

Also could do the same for the dalvik cache, ie:

mkdir /data/storage/dalvik-cache  #unless it exists

mkdir /data/dalvik-cache #unless it exists

busybox mount -o bind /data/storage/dalvik-cache /data/dalvik-cache

dalvik-cache ends up growing almost as quick as apps get moved and ends up filling /data 🙁

# busybox du -sh /data/dalvik-cache
37.8M    /data/dalvik-cache
# busybox du -sh /data/app
14.0M    /data/app

Oveall very pleased with AN10G2, only dissapointment is such small /data partition, 256M would of bee fine, and use sdcard...

This second option is currently hard to implement as it would require to modify the init.rc file within the boot image, which currently can't be done as the boot image hasn't been unpacked/decrypted.

(Current Arnova 10 G2 custom firmware uses a boot image from another RK2918 tablet)

I have a bad day now @@

After reading some post, I was trying to setup a mount point in /data for increasing storage space for that partition by modify the vold.fstab file under /system/etc.

Without luck, I probably added and incorrect line to the file, now my Arnova 10 G2 is looping during the bootup process 🙁

Is there any tricky ways like pressing the buttons with a combination to bypass those errors and get back to the desktop screen so I can rollback the vold.fstab file?

The worst case I can afford is to hard reset the device, any steps and tools suggestions ? (where to downlaod and how to connect the device to computer when it just keep looping itself, the computer saying unrecognise device or fail to install driver).

Thanks.

You can try putting a paper clip in the reset hole, but it probably won't do much in this situation.

Have a look here, you should be fine using the Rockchip Flashing Tool:
