OK so I got a few requests from folks to figure out how to hide the status bar. I have figured out a way to do it but it requires rebooting every time. But it might help you guys that really need it for a book app or something.

Now first I claim to be NO android programmer! I just did some research on it in Android Developers SDK documentation. So possibly I miss-interpreted it but this is what I found out.

As of Android 2.x and up, applications control use of full screen or not in the AndroidManifest.xml file that is in every app. For instance you see some applications can in fact get full screen. A prime example of an app that takes full screen is the game Hot Pursuit.

HOWEVER they then must have a way to exit the application and thus bring back the status bar. As without a status bar you have no back or home button! Without a back button you are stuck in an application and can't get back to the desktop EVER! So application designers are the one responsible for using full screen or not and if they do they must give you a way to exit the application rather than using the status bars back button. However as you see applications are usually written to support running in the different Android OS's so MOST of them tend to leave the status bar as the way to exit an app. They took an easy way out rather than a bunch of code to determine the OS and deciding to hide the status bar or not and putting in an app exit GUI and code.

Launchers that clam to be able to do this apparently can on Honeycomb but not on Gingerbread and I tried all the launchers out there. None can hide it because a launcher is considered a service not an app!

So there you have it. If your kindle book reader or other app is screwed up because of the status bar, thats because the app developer decided not to take full screen! So complain to them about it and see if you can get them to fix it.

OK, OK... now to get to the point. I did find a way to get rid of the status bar. It's a bit kludgy but works. Here is what you need and the facts:

1) You must have a rooted ROM
2) You must have a file browser like Root Explorer that can see files in /system/app
3) Realize once you turn off the status bar and launch an app, your cannot get back! You will be forced to reboot using the reset pin hole!
4) You will have to reboot each time to go back and forth

OK so here are the steps to take to do it.

1) Open Root Explorer and navigate to /system/app
2) Scroll down and find SystemUI.apk
3) Press and hold on SystemUI.apk and you will get a popup menu. Select rename.
4) Rename SystemUI.apk to SystemUI.xxx and press OK button.
5) You will immediately be presented with a message that SystemUI has crashed. Even pressing force close you can't get out of it!
6) You now MUST use the reset pin hole to reboot the Arnova.
7) When you boot back up Voila! No Status Bar......
8) Launch your app and enjoy but REMEMBER to get back you again will have to reset with the pin hole reset as you have no way to exit the app!

To turn back on the status bar you basically do the opposite.

1) Reboot and launch Root Explorer
2) Navigate to /system/app and rename SystemUI.xxx back to SystemUI.apk
3) At this point since you have no status bar.... Here we go again... Reboot!
4) On next boot up you will have your status bar back again.

So there you go... Best I can offer at this point. If you don't like this approach again contact the app maker and get them to code in full screen mode and a way to exit the app.

Oh and FYI... I tried to use a app killer like ES Task Manager. If you show hidden tasks SystemUI does show up but when you kill it, it comes right back. So if you're thinking of an easier way using a task killer, don't go to the trouble I already tried that ūüôā

Enjoy,
Bob

You could rename SystemUI.apk then remap the buttons with button savior or edit the rk29-keypad.kl in system/usr/keylayout but only real fix is like finless said to contact the maker and ask them to update it with full screen and a back button Frown

I have followed Bob's instructions and it is working great with Button Savior.  Only issue I have now is that when I connect my tablet to my pc I am unable to access the option to turn usb storage on and off, as this only appears in the status bar.  I have had a play with Anycut but can't find anything that will get me to the usb mass storage screen. Does anybody have any ideas?

I've just done this as well, using button savior with much happiness!!

I've got a question though, by this same procedure, would it be of any benifit to rename anything else in system/app that we don't use, mainly phone.apk...I've renamed it with working success, just curious if it's doing any good.

Also curious, I've peeked this thing at 204 MB, normal operation has me around 140 MB free RAM, is that normal, above average? I've done the v6 supercharger scripts, but didn't really note my baseline RAM XD

i use widgetsoid, free from market, now i have everything which was on my status bar displayed on my homescreen, including a widget to enable usb when connected to the pc, works really well and makes the tablet even better in my eyes!

Folks - this is superb - thanks for the tips which make the device workable as a Kindle tablet!

I have put button savior on and it works a treat and widgetsoid is great too - however I need some help because when I plug in the mini/micro-USB cable and hit the relevant (I think) widgetsoid buttons I get the message "plug in USB first" which would seem to suggest I've done something wrong.

A step-by-step guide perhaps? Would be much appreciated.

Finally, any way to see notifications?

Thanks in advance!

NEW solution!  Even though I came up with this original solution, I just came up with a new one!

I made a SystemUI.apk that has a totally clear status bar!  You can see through it!

This is NOT a ROM flash.

I hope Admin does not get upset with me but you can download it here:

You are the man Bob!!! I have already followed all the earlier instructions and can't wait to try this. Keep up the awesome work!

update: used the 0% and it works like a charm. I liked the previous solution but missed the notifications. This is just awesome. Thanks again!

Hi

I am extremely new to anything Android / Tablets, but i have tried this and failed... (using an arnova 10 G2)

I have used arctools and installed the custom firmware, question is this classed as a rooted firmware? if not then that will be why i guess..

if it is, i have managed to do everything and used ES File Manager, i have allowed it root access, etc but every time i try to rename the files it will not let me? any ideas or am i better off downloading the paid rootmanager app?

Love the site and the amount of information you guys provide ūüôā

(reason im doing this is because i am setting it up for my mother-in-law in hospital who recently had a severe stroke and i want her to be able to use it as a Kindle (stupid amazon wont bring out the fire in the UK so ive gone for an alternative))

Any help would be appreciated

Chris

Hello Chris,

The EZ firmware is made to be as simple as possible to install on a tablet so you get Android Market and a partial root. The root is partial in the sense that the system files are not allowed to be changed. That's probably why ES FM fails, so would any other app.

I need to have a closer look at the Kindle app issue to give some advice, I'll come back to you soon.

Sorry for your mother in law, I hope she is getting better.

Cheers.

Hi
Thank you so much for the quick reply, i did wonder if that was the case and to be honest i didn't want to do anything to complicated or risky with the Tablet not being mine so the EZ root was perfect (especially because the kindle app is not on the Appslib Confused)

All that is happening is you miss the top line off from the page because of the bar at the top so the transparent bar would be an ideal fix (may not be perfect but at least you would see most of the text)

I would really appreciate any help you can offer, if i have to do a full root then i may go down this avenue but i was kind of trying to avoid it.

These are cracking little tablets for the money and i had no idea that android was so customizable (im use to apple/iphone) im rather tempted to get one myself Laugh

The mother-in-law is on the mend but its going to be a long road and being stuck in hospital for weeks on end isnt much fun so hopefully this little tablet will perk her up a bit

Thanks again

Chris

I decided to to a full root and to be honest it was very simple to do.. so i have now carried out the transparent mod and it works PERFECTLY..

Brilliant mod, i cant wait to see what else you guys on the forum can come up with

(at this rate im going to have to buy one of these for myself, really enjoyed playing with it and the behind the scenes)

Thanks again

Chris
