Edit 2012/02/06: This firmware is not maintained anymore on our site and we have removed the file download. Please check our EZ firmware that is very simple to flash or go with a more advanced Arnova 10 G2 custom firmware with Android Market and root |
Update 2011/12/23: Custom firmware updated to version 1.1 (arn10g2-23-1_1.zip)
Custom firmwares providing root and Android Market to the Arnova 10 G2 keeps improving.
Following our first custom firmware and a second release of HTC Mania firmware, Finless forum user has just succeeded in assembling a great custom firmware providing:
This firmware currently needs a special procedure to be flashed, see indications below.
Android Market installation
Android Market is not included with this firmware, please use ArcTools to download and install Android Market on your device, after flashing the custom firmware.
Important Note: ArcTools latest version (0.60) that should be available on Appslib tomorrow or is already available here offers new Market and Apps application packages:
- Default Apps & Market (Android 2.3) is the default package made for custom firmwares made by Arctablet, it won't work currently work on this one, but that should be fixed soon
- Default Apps & Market 3.4.4 (rootless Install): should work with any firmware including non rooted ones ** recommended option with this firmware **
- Default Apps & Market 3.4.4 (root Install): works on rooted firmwares, unfortunately it fails on this one due to lack of disk space on /system partition. This should be fixed soon
As you can see, Android Market is not very straighforward on this firmware, we are working on improving it.
If you don't want to flash this custom firmware and still want to install Android Market, you can try the following method from our forum.

Great work finless you really have put an amazing amount of effort and time into this and credit to you.
I will install it after it has been tested a bit more but for now I am going to install the second method from HTC Mania as I have just been sent a brand new 8Gb version to replace a 4gb version that had battery problems. With Xmas just a few days away it is the safest way for me at the minute so my daughter can have her tablet up and running.
I hope to see more development on the new firmware that Finless has produced and maybe the easier default way to install the firmware as the Rockchip method may be a bit daunting for less experienced users.
But looking at what has been done WOW incredible!!!

- full root support
- 459mb of storage space for installing applications, this almost doubles previous firmwares

I have tried to flsh my Arnova 10 G2 twice to the new fully root firmware from the previously rooted version. The internal storage was really increased, but I found something strange
I have the apps ES File Explorer and purchased Titanium Backup Pro. The ES File Explorer can mount the /system to RW with a rooted system, and the Titanium Backup should only work on a rooted system too. Both apps work fine in the previous rooted version (the one from Admin)
After I flash the new firmware, I can see a "black" color Superuser installed. When I installed the ES File Explorer and Titanium Backup, both applications claimed that the system is not rooted!
Does anyone has the similar sympthom? Thanks.

Thats interesting! I have been using Root Exlporer and it shows /system as RW.
Let me download ES file explorer and see whats up. Maybe one of the other directories it expects to be rw got left as ro. Probably a quick fix. Hang tight till I figure it out.
See I told you guys it needed testing! Thanks!

I just flashed this ROM without any difficulties. Unfortunately I cannot get Arctools to install anything. It appears to download the default GAPPS & install everything with no problems but when I reboot there are no GAPPS. Anyone else had this? Is it a bug with Arctools?
Yes, there is a small issue of ArcTools not being able to install the Market properly with this firmware. This has just been documented in the Blog post. I am checking with finless on how to resolve that.

Hang tight guys. This is why I wanted some to test.
/system is a ext3 file system thats for sure. Root explorer says it's RW but when you try to write or delete files in /system it doesnt take. It says it copied a file there but when you go back to look it's not there. This is why root install of arctools market doesnt work. Acrtools says it installed the files in /system but the files did not really get copied even though arctools says it did. Wierd.
Any of you linux guys got any ideas? I am going to look to see what I missed but right now I am guessing. I am guessing it's a ownership thing not a RW permission.

I got it guys. Working now. I was using a old version of SU and Superuser.apk from the Wendal tools. e.g. I used the /system he roots with his tool instead of doing it by hand as this page suggests.
http://wiki.archosfans.com/index.php?title=Dump_your_Home_Tablet_rom_and_create_a_custom_rom
Also not everything was chmod properly nor was some things given root user ownership.
Now I can install arctools and it will install the market just fine. Titanium backup now works too so looks like I got it nailed.
So give me a bit of time to double check everything and do some more testing myself but I feel I will have a new rom out today version 1.1
