Edit 2012/02/06: This firmware is not maintained anymore. Please check our EZ firmware that is very simple to flash or go with a more advanced Arnova 10 G2 custom firmware with Android Market and root

A custom firmware for the Arnova 10 G2 providing Android Market and root has been built by CyberSoft from Htcmania spanish forum. We have slightly modified this Firmware so it can be used with ArcTools to get the Android Market 3.1.5 installed.

Please note this firmware is valid on the Arnova 10 G2 (second generation, see picture above) and will not work on Arnova 10 or Arnova 10b. It's unknown yet if the firmware is compatible with Arnova tablets from the Philly.com bundle or other Arnova 10 G2 OEM devices.

Edit 2011/11/03: User HaroldG on our forum reported a failure on his Philly tablet flashing. We are currently having a closer look at the…

I really like the look of the hardware that the Arnova 10 G2 for the price. The only thing putting me off is the current incompatibility with Android Market. When do you think your firmware update for this will be available? Also, would this mean that all apps in Market would work?

On installing this new firmware, the display showed a garbled version of the ARNOVA logo and reset itself a few times. Thankfully it did still load up with the callibration screen followed by the setup wizard. After setting up wifi, installing arctools and rebooting. I now have a working market and GMail.

This is absolutely incredible work. Thank you guys so very much!

Funnily, on loading the firmware, my Arnova 10 G2 warns me "Do NOT remove SD card form the device". Is this a typo for the Arnova engineers?

The custom firmware for the Arnova 10 G2 is available right now. It's still an early test version, but I am currently quite satisfied with it. Most of the applications are available on the Market, some may not be listed because they are filtered for some hardware requirements by Google or the application editor.

Azertimes and Lock from http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=281826&page=2 reported the following Apps and Games from the Market to work fine on the Arnova 10 G2:

Apps:

Magic Doodle, Dropbox, Madrid Railmaps, Facebook, CineTrailer, Seesmic, Tunein Radio, Newsrob, Aldiko ,FBReader, Eurosport, News Republic, Ikea Products, The Weather Channel, OfficeSuite, Quadrant Advanced, Youtube, Google Maps

Games:

Ninja Kaka, Flight Frency,Angry birds/seasons/rio, Infernus I and II, Brick Breaker, Chess Free, Guns'n'Glory, Backgammon, Jewels, Bubble Bubbles, Bubble Buster, Solitaire, 3D Mahjong, Sudoku HD, 101 in 1, Basketball Shots 3D, Invadroid, Pacific Wings, Pool Break Lite (Bola 8, bola 9, snooker, crokinole, carrom), Samurai II, Tiki Golf 2, Age of Zombies, Gangstar West Coast Hustle, Cute the rope, Death Worm,The Settlers HD, Plantas vs Zombie, Robo Defense, Greedy spider

Did anyone with a Philly News tablet flash this?  I'm sorely tempted to do it (as I'm familiar with flashing ROM's on my Android phone) but this exploit doesn't: (1) establish root; and (2) provide for access to recovery, so nandroid backups can't be run.  Anyone figure that part out yet?

On the other hand, access to Gapps is invaluable and may be worth the risk, especially if you can restore the default firmware and even get to the chip to unbrick.

I just don't want to be first, or second.  Third or fourth, good chance of that.... 😉

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

The garbage lines during boot are a small bug, probably in the boot image part of the update, it may be fixed in a later release.

The wording in "form" is probably a typo [Image Can Not Be Found]

Rockchip based tablets currently do no have a powerfull recovery like in Android phones.

With Rockchip Flashing tools, there is still a basic low level recovery that works in most cases of device bricking.

There is almost no risk for anyone familiar with the Rockchip flashing tools (which are sometimes a bit tricky with Windows drivers). The procedure for recovering a RK29xx based bricked device is pretty much the same as for the Rockchip 28xx tablets.

Thanks for this. Is the Custom Firmware update installed in the same way as the firmware update as idicated on the Arnova website?

Also, does Gmail work with the new custom firmware?

Many thanks in advance.

The firmware update procedure is the same as for the Arnova default firmware.

The Blog post describe it in details, as well as the Market installation part with Arctools.

Gmail application can be installed thru the Market, it does not sync automatically tough (the accounts syncing part is missing in this firmware)

ok I understand the installation bit. I thought the Market Installation didn't work with Arctools for the 10 G2 - thanks for clearing this up. Before I go out and buy this tomorrow - can I ask what the consequence of not automatically syncing is? What does this actually mean? Really sorry about the silly questions - want to make sure I buy the right tab for my requirements.

Many thanks.

I read the Spanish website (admittedly translated by Google).  It looks like they've got full root access to the tablet.

The firmware you've got here, is that going to give me root access?  Can I download and install Titanium, busybox, etc.?

Yes this firmware provides full root access, being based on the firmware from the Spanish guys.

We'll post a video of the firmware overview soon.

Please feel free to ignore my feedback on the typo, I noticed the same thing when updating to the latest official firmware version.

So far everything is running wonderfully smoothly, the browser is a dream to use now and the inclusion of the Market has turned this tablet from good to amazing. A couple of questions though.

Does this kernels have CIFS support enabled? I am trying to use CIFS Manager to setup my SAMBA shares with no success so far.

Also AdFree produces the error "Unable to locate a partition to remount to write the hosts file to." This is stopping AdFree from working. I don't know if this is a file system issue or AdFree. I just thought running something like this would help with browser performance and save on bandwidth.

Cheers, and please feel free to tell me to jog on if I'm bothering you [Image Can Not Be Found]
