Compile modules for current kernel?

I am looking in to how we can compile modules for the current kernel to give us things like cifs and iptables etc and have come across the following site which gives an overview of how to set up a cross compile environment for the RK2918

http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://wendal.net/&ei=9RsDT9GvLpTx8QOXjYnKAQ&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CFEQ7gEwBg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Drk29%2Bcifs.ko%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26prmd%3Dimvns

if that link does not work go to wendel dot net and search for it there and translate the page in google.

I have set this up on my PC and compiled the kernel and tried to compile cifs.ko and slow-work.ko and and can insmod slow-work.ko without issues but cifs.ko gives the message invalid symbol, if I do a dmesg I see it states:

Unknown symbol kmap

Unknown symbol kunmap

Unknown symbol kmap_atomic

Unknown symbol kunmap_atomic

Can anyone assist with this?  I checked the kernel version of the modules created and they match the kernel version running on the tablet so its definately the right kernel source..

Thanks

B

Great idea.

I am not very familiar with kernel/modules compilation for Android.

I don't know if the RK2918 kernel sources from here are any different:

/blog/archos-tablet/lgpl-rk2918-linux-kernel-source-code-publication/

Also, it may be interesting to check if modules compiled for RK2818 tablets work:

I just tried cifs.ko module from RK2818 archive, it does not load Frown

cifs: version magic '2.6.25 mod_unload ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.32.27 preempt mod_unload ARMv7 '

Edit: Just tried these: http://code.google.com/p/mbmail-m8lite/downloads/detail?name=T760_cifs_byMeineson.rar&can=2&q=

cifs.ko does load (need to insmod slow-work.ko first), I have not tested any further.

excellent the cifs module works fine, now if we could figure out how they compiled them we could make more available, im looking to do:

tun[vpn access to network server when away from home]
iptables [i need this to use proxy droid so i can force my kids tablets through a proxy to keep them safe online]

i'm sure there are probably more

Great.

Maybe the Google Code page owner (http://code.google.com/u/meineson/) could give you some help with the module compilation...

Please keep us informed with your results, having more modules installed in a custom firmware would be great to provide added functionnality to the device Wink

You can download a working tun.ko from here. it's just one line, so copy & past in the browser:

I think iptables is in the FW already. At least I have it and I didn't put it there.

Yes, also Cisco AnyConnect will complain about iptables. but the binary is there and is version 1.3.7. not sure what else is missing.

This should provide us a working cifs.ko

http://bbs.imp3.net/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=10306942&page=1&extra=#pid15417332

The post contains a patched version, because the original one crashes.

The guy also explains his toolchain and also complaints about the lack of support from RK.

Didn't test it myself.
