Daft question , and one for possible future ROMS ... but has the g2 got a function , or the software available to run a proxy , eg connect via work etc?

You have some VPN support under Wireless & network settings / VPN Settings
Proxy wise, I found this app http://android-proxy.blogspot.com/2011/03/android-proxy-app-transproxy.html
Not tested here though

I don't know if it works but get the free app anycut. This allows you to put short cuts on your desktop for settings and stuff you cannot see in the settings menu normally. One of them is Proxy settings. I had it open yesterday and it has all the fields for setting up a proxy but again I do not know if it actually works.

Use Firefox (you can download it from the Market) and download an addon for it: proxy mobile
In the addon settings you have the possibility to define a proxy.
Tested it on an unrooted device and works fine.
The anycut option won't work
