Hi,

I decompiled the com.arctablet.arctools.apk and updated the Dutch translation.

Please find a diff -u patch file as a zip.

Good to see you around hvdwolf Wink

Not sure where the zip file got attached, I don't see it on your post.

You should be able to upload a file to your post using the "Upload Attachments" button below the post editor or you can use Arctablet uploader: http://www.arctablet.com/blog/at-upload/

Btw, the translation is normally done thru our WIKI, I know it's not the most convenient thing, and the main (English) strings are not up to date.

Thanks for helping, very appreciated.

It's all fine, thank you.

I'll include it in next Arctools build.

OK.

It would be nice if arctools would work on RK2818 devices as well. That's the reason why I decompiled it. Any news on that? Or can I help in any way: I think that by now I do know my device a little bit better than average.

But I'm no java programmer at all.

Well, Arctools doesn't do anything magic, it just "helps" to install Android Market or flash a custom firmware.

On many devices it relies on some symlinks from a modified custom firmware.

Well, I'd like do some more RK2818 work, now I am almost done with my RK2918 kitchen that automates the custom firmware building (root+market) from a stock firmware.

I'll get back to you, I believe there are still many cool things to do on older RK2818 tablets.

Cheers.

I can imagine you are a busy person as well but could you give some more info on this "some symlinks" remark. I don't mean an explanation what symlinks are as I'm very well aware of whate these are, but how you use symlinks to fake/trick the market installation.

Sure, no problem.

The symlinks are related to Android Market and Gapps and are made to link these files out of CRAMFS readonly /system partition. The links ends up in /data so they can easily be writen and updated by a user level application: that's basically what Arctools Apps install feature is doing. Historically this came from Archos Gen8 devices that have the links prebuilt in the stock firmware to ease Android Market installation.

On some firmware we built, based on your work hvdwolf, birdiebnl and others we have made those links in the CRAMFS system partition.

I'll list all the links with all the details if you need.

I am also open to help on RK2818 firmwares, when time permits.

This symlinking is a nice solution.

Currently I made the /system read-writable with aufs.ko and by doing that I can copy the market apks to /system/app. I didn't do that yet as I have been working on installing apps during boot time. That will be in my next rom. Than I will move to the "next project" which is the "post install"  of the market apps. If that could be done together via arctools that would be nice. I'm working wit a set of other RK2818 rom builders on XDA. They will possibly follow as that part is completely the same on each RK2818.

I'm totally up to implement the necessary changes in Arctools to support more custom firmwares. I already have some modifications in the works to help installing Gapps on Cyanogenmod 7 firmwares, we could use about the same setup if the Market is to be installed on a writable /system.

Let me know when you have a firmware to be tested, I'll give it a look.

Cheers.

I "opened" your CM7 rom and the way you use the symlinks to /data/appsmarket/{app,lib,framework} is nice as well.

In my last rom I removed the writable /system again as the use of aufs.ko makes the rom slightly less stable and it gives more overhead on the read/writes.

I prefer the symlink solution. I just released a new rom (without your system) that incorporates a "apk install on boot option" for those apks that you want to bundle but really ned to be installed.

But I want to make a rom without the gApps and with the symlinks. This weekend I build one, try your Arctools and let you know. I tell the other builders how it functions and than they can decide whether they want to follow or not.

When looking at the google apps you have

/system/app/GoogleBackupTransport.apk
/system/app/GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk
/system/app/GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
/system/app/GooglePartnerSetup.apk
/system/app/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
/system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
/system/app/MediaUploader.apk
/system/app/SetupWizard.apk
/system/app/Vending.apk
/system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
/system/app/youtube.apk
/system/app/NetworkLocation.apk
/system/app/Talk.apk
/system/app/GoogleFeedback.apk

/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar

/system/lib/libspeech.so
/system/lib/libvoicesearch.so

I checked your Gingerbread Cyanogenmod rom.

When comparing with my own eclair, froyo and Gingerbread rom I pack a different set of apps.

The ones in italic are the ones "missing" in your arctools package (at least for GB CM7).

The ones in bold are the ones I do not pack as they are for real phones and are based on the fact that your can use gprs/umts, etc. If you have a modem in or connected to your tablet these might work, but never on an RK2818 like the Archos 7HTv2 which do not support i(3G) modems. As such I don't mind to have them extra as they are only a few MBs so that's no problem.

The ones that are missing are bothering me more. Are you planning to include them?

I'll include/remove anything you need Smile We can also make different packages if needed, I'd like to have this system as simple and open as possible, so I'll consider any feedback that is made.

In addition, we could also add some external configuration file for extra packages to be offered.

That's very friendly of you. The youtube.apk is a case of doubt: it's technically speaking not really a Google app, but it's nice to have it.

Do you want me to make a zip for you? Nothing simpler than that. If neccessary you can repack it.

I copied your setup in my new experimental rom.

    mkdir /data/appsmarket
    chmod 777 /data/appsmarket
    mkdir /data/appsmarket/system
    chmod 777 /data/appsmarket/system

And of course included the symlinks in my system like

GoogleBackupTransport.apk -> /data/appsmarket/system/app/GoogleBackupTransport.apk
