Hi there,
I have just received my Titanium 97HD today.
I was a very happy camper when I started checking it out.
No interface lag, pretty fast response, nice display with no pixel errors.
So I had pretty much decided to keep it - when it happened:
I left the room.
Which means the second you leave the same room as your router is in, the wi-fi strength starts to drop.
And with it - even more so - the bandwidth.
I have VDSL50. Normally I get a 33 MBit/s downstream.
When I am in the next room, it starts to drop. Streams with 1.600 KBits start to lag.
The next room - meaning approx. 5 Meters from the router - I get speedtests of 0,3 (!) MBit/s.
Not acceptable. I´m not looking for 33 MBit/s, of course, but I would like to be able to watch my streams with at least 1.600 KBit when I´m on the same floor as the router!
I have a brandnew router by the way. Other devices, e.g. a smartphone and another cheap tablet from I.onik have no troubles at all.
Tried selecting other channels, 2.4GHz or 5Ghz. Same result. Same with apps that promise to enhance WiFi performance.
Is this a general problem - crappy Wifi module on the Titanium - or is it just my device?
Quick answer required please, I got two weeks to send it back...
Gunny
I have noted similar Wifi issues on my 97 Titanium with poor coverage and stability, there are also similar reports by other users in a french forum.
I'm currently comparing the Wifi performance with other tablets, I'll probably on a video to better illustrate the issue.
I don't know if it's a hardware issue related to poor Wifi/antenna design, a problem with the back metal case of the device or maybe just a software issue that can be fixed by a firmware update.
Cheers.

Thanks!
Whatever it is, it seems to be case of poor quality management! It´s not like that this is very hard to notice.
I´ve tried the following:
Reset the device to factory setting; in the setup manager I refused the option to install other apps.
This seems to have had a positive effect.
It is still far from perfect or even acceptable, but next room now has good bandwith and the drop to the other rooms is significant, but mostly at least seems to be a little stronger than before (mostly above 1 MBit)
Here´s the interesting part: The upload bandwidth is good! Let´s say I get 1 MBit/s downstream downstairs, but I still get at least 2 - 3 MBit upload stream at the same time. Very curious result I´d say, a higher UL than DL ratio.
Also the Wifi Analyzer app shows me the same WiFi strength (dbm) in all rooms. So the signal is there?
Here is a video pointing the main WiFI issues on the ARCHOS 97 Titanium.
It shows the following: settings up WPS network on the Titanium, listing WiFI networks in Settings, comparing signal with the Google Nexus 10 tablet (next to the Access Point and walking at different places in the house)
My observations are the following:
1. the signal is pretty weak on the Titanium, it does catch less networks than the Nexus 10 tablet. At worse time, it's 12 networks on the Nexus vs 4 networks on the ARCHOS
2. the signal does not vary much on the ARCHOS. I suspect the returned values for the sensibility are erroneous, maybe to hide the low performance of the WiFI on the device. As it appears on the video
I'll do more test soon, include some WiFI speed tests on my local network and WiFI comparison with more tablets.
Cheers.

Yes, it is aluminium
So it's the same like Hyundai X900, that's why their behavior is exactly the same.
In order to maximize reception, I have to hold the tablet in landscape mode (I've opened the X900 and the antennas are one at the top and one at the bottom of the tablet, when I look it in landscape mode). If I hold it like a book - by either side - WiFi speed is reduced dramatically.

Well, a user from a German board contacted Archos support. They claimed that only a few devices had that problem.
So I sent back the first one and ordered a second 97 HD from a different vendor.
What can I say?
Same old problem!
Meanwhile German amazon customers have also started writing reviews complaining about the WiFi performance.
the signal does not vary much on the ARCHOS. I suspect the returned values for the sensibility are erroneous, maybe to hide the low performance of the WiFI on the device.
That´s true. The meter might show 4 of 5 rings, but that has got nothing to do with the data rate. You may have both 12 MBit or 0,9 MBit while the same signal strength is indicated....
As to the metal backside: I previoulsy had a (cheaper) I.onik tablet with a metal backside here - which had a really nice WiFi performance...
I believe it's an hardware problem, so there may not be much to do.
I'll eventually try firmwares from similar Retina like tablets (such as the Cube U9GT5) to see if these firmware are compatible and the WiFI works better.
Cheers.

I'm downloading it, from the tablet itself... it's running for 90 minutes already, about 70% complete.
I'm planning to do some more tests, I'll report how it goes.
Cheers.
