I have just an Archos 97 Platinum HD tablet from Amazon and it should be here tomorrow. I have been trying to find out about the tablet so I will know what to expect from it when it arrives. But the specs I'm reading on different websites have me confused.
I see there's a 97 and a 97b. Some sites say the 97 has a 1ghz quad cpu, others say its a 1.2ghz. The 97b is reported as having a 1.6ghz quad core cpu. Or a dual core one. The 97 has dual 2mp cameras. Or 5mp. Or 2mp front and 5mp back. The 97b has 5mp cameras front and back. Bluetooth is on both models. Or neither. Or just on the 97b. It comes with Android 4.1. Or it could be 4.2. So you can understand why I'm confused.
And Archos's own website doesn't help either. It lists the spec for the 97b as having a 1.6ghz quad core processor and twin 2mp cameras. Has the revised edition cut corners on the camera in favour of a higher rated cpu?
As no websites list the 97b I take it I could end up with either of the two. Which one is the better value for money? or is it much of a muchness?
Welcome to ARCHOS mess mickrickÂ
There may also be some confusion on sites with the Titanium 97 series available in 97 and 97b as well. Well, the Platinum 97 model seems to have disappeared some ARCHOS site, only the 97b is now listed.
If I recall right, the 97 model is based on the Allwinner A31 CPU which is now a bit dated but still gives decent performance. The only problem is ARCHOS doesn't seem to have updated their firmware compared to other vendors running on the same platform which currently offer Android 4.4 KitKat. The 97b version is running on the Rockchip RK3188 CPU, which is a bit faster processor but has a less powerful GPU. For this kind of devices running retina like displays, I have a small preference to the A31 based machines compared to RK3188, but there is not a big difference.
The 97 model doesn't seem to be widely available anymore so it's possible you will get a 97b, unless the Amazon or the vendor still has some old stock to get rid off. I hope you got a good price because these tablets are not really up to date and in my opinion aren't really worth more than €200.
Please, let us know what you get and what you think of the device...
Cheers.

Hey thanks for such a quick reply. I think it will be the original 97 and not 97b, and I got it for £124/€150 so I think I did alright on the price.
The fact that it uses pure android and no overlay bloatware, like a certain Korean manufacturer I could name, will hopefully make it all the better for speed. I have heard that the 97 is the same as the Onda V972_V1 which has KitKat 4.4.2 update available, so hopefully I will get that on at some stage.
