Hi,

Could someone send me a picture of their Archos when you plug it into a PC?  It should put up a prompt asking if you want to mount the storage via USB.

My screen is broken so I can't see the prompt.  Been trying to guess where to press but no luck yet!  Perhaps the digitiser is broken too.

It's an Archos 101 but I guess any Gen 8 will display the same message.

Thanks.

Peter.

Hello Peter,

Sorry for what happened to your 101 Confused

I just checked, actually when you plug the tablet to the PC, you get a message in the notification window but no USB connect "popup" at this point. You'll need to scroll in the notification area, then click on "USB connected" ... which makes it a little more difficult if you have no visual feedback of what you do.

I have attached the screen from an Archos 101 for you to check.

Let us know how it goes... and what you want to do in the end, there are maybe other ways to achieve it.

OK - thanks for that.  I could have sworn it popped up automatically.

I need some way of knowing if the digitiser works.  Can you think of any menu I might be able to navigate to that'd give some indication that something happened?  Shame I don't have a "switch to tv" button on the desktop!

I know - sorry to bother you again - how about a screen shot of the menu you get when you hold the power button for a few seconds?  If I can hit the shutdown button then I'll know if the screen works.  Though I think you then get a second menu asking what kind of shutdown.

There you go. The third screen is a dialog and does not require any input, I just included it for you to check. Archos101G8_shutdown_power_button.pngImage Enlarger Archos101G8_shutdown_power_button2.pngImage Enlarger Archos101G8_shutdown_power_button3.pngImage Enlarger

Thanks for that.

I'm afraid I've had no luck with it.

Though the good news is - I realise the digitiser must be working to some extent as the screen always dims slightly after about 60 seconds, I tap the screen and it goes to full brightness.  So perhaps it is OK.

Now I need to see if I can find any instructions on how to remove the old digitiser and apply it to a new screen!

Thanks.

If you plan to do some hardware fixing, you may have a look here to get some details on the inside of the Archos 101 IT

I have some similar photos myself now!  I've taken out the screws taken the back off.  Tomorrows project is to remove the screen from the case.

Then I'll try my luck with some "spares or repairs" ones off ebay.

I've given up on the idea of buying the LCD and getting the digitiser off after talking to someone who works with hardware here where I work.  He doesn't think it's practical to attempt it.

Cheers.

I can't give much advice on that, but I'm interested in the outcome and if you can document the process or post a few pictures in the forum here.

Cheers.

I will do that.  I found some instructions on the internet for taking the case apart but they weren't quite complete.  I can at least fix that bit.
