I'm using the Archos 3G stick with an Arnova 10 G2 tablet. I've only been able to try it at home so far and I've got it to work and have browsed the internet using it. My provider Vodafone has been having network issues though, so it's difficult to test the stick properly.

Every so often, internet connectivity is lost and the stick starts flashing rapidly - suggesting it's searching for available networks - and then a message appears at the top saying "Restricted access changed" and it also says voice and data services have been blocked. It seems the only way to get the stick working again is to unplug it and plug it back in. Does anyone know what this "Restricted access changed" message is about? It's some sort of Android thing, but I'm not sure what's causing it and whether it's going to be a regular problem, or whether it's just Vodafone's (presumably temporary) issues here that's causing it.

I plan to use the tablet on the bus with the stick connected, and I may travel through areas of poor signal. Therefore I hope it's not something that happens due to loss of signal, as it'd be a bit inconvenient - I was hoping it'd disconnect and reconnect by itself if it lost signal. Although the signal on my phone (also Vodafone) here is fine, so it may not be a signal issue (the issues Vodafone are having here at the moment relate to web browsing only - the signal strength remains unaffected).

Thanks in advance

Hello David,

I haven't been using the 3G stick on my Arnova 10 G2 a lot, but I don't remember getting such an error.

Does it happen if you leave the stick connected for a long time in a place where you have a good 3G coverage ?

It also may be related (as you mention) to a reconnection bug on the Android system, which may be resolved in a later firmware update. I believe the Arnova has a quite early 3G support compared to some other models. The implementation on the Archos G9 for instance is probably more stable, if you got a friend with a G9, can you compare with the 3G stick ?

Cheers.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I've not been able to test the tablet & stick in an area with good 3G coverage yet, and unfortunately I don't know anyone with a  G9 tablet.

I'm hoping a stable 3G connection won't be required, as otherwise it'll be troublesome to use it while travelling through areas which have different signal strengths.

Do you think it'd make any difference if I connected it to the micro USB port (using an adapter lead), rather than the main USB port? I read that other similar tablets with this stick  behave differently depending on which USB port it's connected to.

Also, regarding the firmware, mine is the one that came with the tablet (build gingerbread.eng.hwg.20110913.192033). Do you know if that's the latest one? I saw one on the Arnova website that was released in October 2011 and is apparently the first and latest version, but it's not clear if that's the version I've got. I'm guessing it is, seeing as it's the first version though.

Thanks again!

I don't think using the other USB port will make a difference, I am not even sure it works with the 3G Dongle (host mode feature is probably required). It's always worth testing though.

I have checked the 20110913 firmware is indeed the version that Arnova has made available on their site. There is currently nothing more recent, appart the 10 G2 Philly edition firmware, but I am not sure it works on non Philly tablets.

Thanks for that.

I've just noticed actually that the stick seems happier to remain connected to the network when the screen is off, so I think I can rule out any physical problems with the USB port (such as a loose connection).

I've e-mailed Arnova support, because their website definitely says the 10 G2 is "fully compatible" with the G9 stick, but that doesn't look like the case to me. I tried plugging the  stick into my Windows laptop and it works fine, so the stick isn't at fault.

It's almost as though something - an app, maybe, although I can't think which one - is causing the stick to reset, which triggers that "restricted access changed" error.
