Hi all,

Does anyone have a simplified walkthrough to show me how to:

a) upgrade my Arnova 8 G2 from the supplied apps market (AppsLib) to Android Marketplace

b) backup my tablet in case the upgrade to Marketplace doesn't work and I need to reset my tablet back to it's default settings.

I realise there's a guide on here somewhere (Morka??) to do the change, but I'm not 100% sure on what I'm doing so if someone could break it down into an idiots guide (i.e. step-by-step) then i'd be most useful. I've only had my tablet for a week and the lack of everyday apps on the rubbish appslib is doing my head in already.

Cheers,

JR

Hello,

First thing, very important, is you need to make sure you have a capacitive model with 8 Gb storage. It has been reported that custom firmwares do not work on other Arnova 8G2 models.

You have many options to get Android Market.

The simplest one is probably our EZ custom firmware, that should be published on the blog very soon. You can already test it using the same procedure as the Arnova 10 G2, see this article and video.

You can also consider using Sowa firmware, which is a little more advanced and provides more space for the applications. The tradeof is a few more manipulations for the flash process.

Morka has also done 2 firmwares that are experimental, which I am not sure are best for a daily use (yet)

Excellent reply, thanks Admin.

Yes, I have the capacitive model (pinch to zoom in/out, multi-touch, etc). By the looks of it i'll wait and go with your EZ custom firmware.

Just to be clear, I can test the EZ custom firmware on my 8G2 by using the same procedure as for the 10G2?

I'm not going to be using loads of applications, so the Sowa firmware option is probably an unnecessary complication for me.

Cheers,

JR

Yes, it's exactly the same procedure.

As you will see in the video, the end part shows an optional manipulation in case the Android Market does not show all apps (Youtube would not be found for example).

Ok, did the firmware upgrade. On the main, works ok. A couple of glitches however:

1) My battery doesn't seem to now charge when switched off. It will charge when i have the tablet in standby mode, but very slowly. This could be related, or it could be a coincidence and that my charger is faulty.

2) BBC Iplayer app won't work. It loads up fine and quick, but when i tap on the screen to play, it just tries to load and then comes back to the previous screen.

3) Browser issue. Every time i now go into my browser it won't let me load a page, it merely kicks me out.

There are positives also, Netflix for Android now works, facebook for android works, Youtube full version works. That's about as far as i've got.

These are the glitches i've found in the 20/30 minutes i've been playing around with it. If there are any suggestions for fixes for these errors, they'd be gratefully received. Similarly, if there's any advice on how to improve the performance of my tablet with the new firmware, please let me know.

Cheers,

JR
