Arnova ChildPad

Hi everyone,

I got the childpad, popped it out of it’s package, and charged it for about 12 hours.

At the end of 12 hours it was reporting about 76% charge, which I attributed to calibration.

After running it for about 2 hours and setting it down for about a day, it was at 6% battery.

I didn’t have a chance to charge it up, so I turned of wifi and locked the screen.

When I went to power it back on after charging for a while, I get nothing.

The charge light will flash for a few seconds when plugged in then it goes steady.

I have tried:

Unplugged:

Hit the reset pin: nothing

Hit reset while holding power: nothing

Hold power for 15 seconds and release: nothing

Plugged in:

Hit the reset pin: nothing

Hit reset while holding power: nothing

Hold power for 15 seconds and release: light goes back to flashing for a few seconds then solid again.

I also tried 2 different chargers just to be sure….

Any suggestions, or a defective unit/battery?

Leave it charging for a night or so. And make sure you are using the supplied ~1.5A DC Charger, using just an usb cable with a pc won’t help.

Thanks.

Well I got the unit working again.  There are two issues here.

First off this thing is super picky about the charger.  The original one looks EXACTLY like one I have for my phone and I had them switched.  Oddly, they both have the same current rating….

If you see a red flashing light, it’s NOT charging.

Also, it appears I may have a bad battery out of the box.  On a full charge (green charge light after 12 hours on the charger with unit completely powered off) I get about an hour of use.  If I just boot it and don’t touch it, the battery is dead in a few hours.

I’ll try to get it replaced and see how it goes.

How is battery life for you folks?

According to exelletor’s review, playing a video in loop with Wi-FI disabled, brightness at 50% on the ChildPad resistive model, it gives a battery life of 5 hours 15 minutes. This is average and the battery life should drop quick if you’re using WiFI and have an higher brightness on the screen.

Cheers.

Are you sure you’re using the correct USB cable.

It should come with 2, one for connection to PC and one for charging.  They are identified by stickers on them.  Make sure you’re using the one with red sticker.

If not, probably bad battery.

Hello,

same problem for me, after a full  discharge of the battery, the Child pad can’t recharge with traditionnal usb cable used for my HTC device.

I use the Arnova cable on the ac adaptator, and it’s charging correctly. Now, i always charge my child pad with this and only this cable.

Heya,

I, too, have had severe battery problems with my CP. In the beginning it would report a nearly full charge when connected to a PC, and when i unplugged it, it would simply switch off. Plugging in the AC adapter for a few brought it back to life.

Now the battery is better calibrated, but still, if i play some graphics-heavy game, the PC cable is not enough to keep it powered up. So after about two hours of (i think it was) Greed Wars, it simply powered off (this time because i didn’t keep an eye on the battery indicator).

Solution: Keep the AC adapter with you. The 500mA from a PC USB port is simply not enough to power it while in use.

just opened the cp tab for my sons birthday and let it charge for a day and got up to 90%. left it plugged in turned it off and when I turned it back on it was down to 29% battery. also left it plugged in powered off over night before we gave it to him and didn’t charge while turned off.is this normal or is there something I can do with out returning it to manufacturer?

If it won’t recharge with the AC adapter, definitely replace it.

2 things come to mind.

1. did you accidentally touch the cord when u switched it off when it reached 90%?

2. If switched off it should keep the power from 90% to around 84% next day, so faulty battery? Wouldnt be the first one.

You can try and plug it in the charger and wait 5 minutes, if the light doesnt turn on. i would return it!

Good luck

I’m sharing b.breum opinion about damaged battery/device.

Still a few things to note, the battery level indicator isn’t that reliable on these devices, it can sometimes gives different readings in a very short time. The important thing is finally how long the device really last without power. Exelletor did measure that playing a video in loop from a fully charged ChildPad and measured 5 hours 15 minutes (with 50% brightness and Wi-FI disabled).

Last thing I can think of, that may happen for new users happy to try many applications with a brand new device is that some of them make acquire a wakelock that actually keep the device on even if the screen is turned off, so that eats the battery. This doesn’t happen if the device is completely turned off.

Cheers.
