whats the internal button?

You have to open up the device - unscrew the four philips head screws, and then carefully click open the back, there are some hidden tabs on each side. The button makes the tablet show up with a different drive when connected via USB. In the linked thread, captmeach7 says he was able to flash the firmware afterwards. I don't know how.

Hello all , I am experiencing exactly the same problem.

I think there was a hardware and/or software update in the latest batch of ChildPad. I just had to change mine due to a hardware failure, and the new one, although coming in the exact same box, runs a slightly different version of the system and software package.

For exemple :

- the animated wallpapers are not the same as in the old ones (no more "bubbles", which my kids liked a lot)

- when I plug the childpad in my computer, I am asked by an android bot if I want to switch to USB hard drive. If I choose yes, the internal memory and card just show up in my drive list. The former ChildPad I had just popped as a multimedia device in "My computer" view without asking anything, whenever I plugged it in.

- The video player cannot go fullscreen anymore, there is always an android bar at the bottom (with icons replaced by dots as long as you do not touch the screen), which is really annoying.

- A new "upgrade" app appeared. When I launch it it just shows a black screen whith current version of the system (AN7DG3B 2012.12.13 1.07) and an upgrade button. When I push the button, il just asks for an "upgrade.zip", so I downloaded any possible firmware image (including the official one from Arnovatech), zipped it, put it in the root folder and tried to upgrade => the result is always "Your update.zip Validation failure!" (sic)

As soon as I have some time, I will try to open the device to check if I can go to recovery mode with the help of the hidden button, then try Rockchip to patch it (I used it without any porblem to hack my former childpad, thanks to this site!). As other told on the other thread, I have no idea what MP Tools is, so I cannot really try it.

One last detail : maybe we are all experiencing this first hand because we are all French. Archos is a French company, they could have started shipping a new evolution of the device locally...

Anyways, I hope I can manage to force Google Play in it, because I had absolutely no idea of how shitty appslib was when I bought this (otherwise rather good) tablet for my son.

Without Google Play installed, it's just a useless piece of crap I would never recommend to anyone.

Well it seems like it is a different hardware and also another version of android, looks like 4.0.3
A dump from a tablet will really helps us.

Another way to enter in flashing mode is to use a terminal app, with the command
reboot bootloader

Still, i don`t recommend to flash a new firmware till a back`up is available.

Ok, I opened My tablet, found the "secret switch" and put it in Vimicro superdrive mode. Had to try a couple of time to do this as nothing shows that you have succeeded (screen stays black, you only know you did it by connecting the usb cable to a PC).

I maintained the hidden switch, then maintained the power switch too, then hit reset. You have to do it again to revert the tablet in normal mode (self-rememberer : next time, do it before screwing it back closed...).

So I moved to the next step : finding what MPTools is.
I finally found a copy of it inside an upgrade pack for another tablet (in french) - direct link to the software pack file (zip password is : http://www.chinistore.com).

I tried to launch it but stopped there as it is an extremely complicated tool that require advanced understanding of what you are doing... which I do not have (along with the correct ini files commented in chinese that are needed to flash a tablet...). BTW, you have to change the language.ini file to switch the tool to English as it is in Chinese too by default.

So, here I am stuck. I reverted my ChildPad to normal boot and I will wait for a specialist to investigate this case further.

I would be glad to help by dumping my tablet... but I do not know where to start and how to do it.

If you can guide me and it doesn't require that I wreck it, I can try.

Hi,I found one more (little) piece of information that might help : I tried pushing the hidden button while the childpad was on. Actually, it is just the (secret) "Vol -" button !

I hope someone will find a way to force google play back on this version soon.

In the meantime, I will keep on crying blood finding a few half shitty apps on appslib for a 4 year old...Yell

How does one make a dump of the tablet? And how to proceed from there to help the experts out?

Hello there,

I seem to be having the same issue and would love some further help, or a definitive "you are wasting your time!" OK so my issues are:

1)      Nothing happens when I put the img file onto the root of the table or the mass storage drive, even if I browse to the file.

2)      I cannot get the tablet into flashing mode, unless I remove the back and use the hidden button.

3)      At this point I too am stuck, and would love to know how to get the custom firmware loaded onto my sons device.

For reference my device says it is:

Model Number:   AN7DG3B.

Running Andriod: 4.0.3

Kernal Version:   3.0.8

Build Number:    2012.12.13 1.07

Has anyone had any success, getting a custom firmware and Pay Store onto this particular table? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Kris

I am still stuck in the same spot, but I have some new information (a little).

I contacted  the French tech support at Archos to ask them if there was an official firmware update planned. Nothing is scheduled right now and they could not give me any information about the new "update" app and how it works (I wanted to revert to the old firmware using the one available to download on the Arnova website).

The problem is that the last evolution of the firmware is really not as functional as the old one, I spotted many un corrected issues :

- impossible to play a video in full screen, the android tab is always displayed

- horizontal and vertical motion detectors are inverted, which makes every game based on them unplayable

- overall MUCH slower and less responsive system

I hope someone finds a way around these soon.

The hidden button seems to be the solution, if someone is able to post a guide on what to do, once in this hidden mode?

The most sensible thing to my mind is enter this mode with the back off. Restore an earlier official firmware, and then use the existing guides on this site to install the custom firmware.

From reading these forums at last one user has been able to revert to an earlier / custom firmware version, so it must be possible. (Fingers crossed!)

this is how it worked for me and I did not required to see the actual recovery mode, I loaded custom software just fine. I have 4.0.3

of course you have to have the rockusb driver installed. or install it as follow

1-Turn off chilpad

2-  connect it to your pc with the usb cable

3-   pin the reset button first then press power button

4- keep both reset and power pressed until the arnova logo shows up, then immediately release the power button keeping the reset pressed 5 to 7 second and release it. The android logo will shows up......I also did it h keeping the reset pressed until the android logo shows up.

5- At this point window will try to install the drivers automatically, but it won't . So go to Device Manager and right click on the unknown usb device- select properties-then update driver-select browser computer for driver software- then got to the Rockchip_Batch_Tool_v1.7 folder\RockusbDriver and select the one for you system hardware-software...click next and iy will install it

recovery mode for custom rom installation

3-   pin the reset button first then press power button

4- keep both reset and power pressed until the arnova logo shows up, keep both pressed until screen goes blank . no recovery screen will be shown, it just blalnk

5- If you are flashing with evolution...Open EvolutionRKtool.exe it should detect and he “Found RKAndroid Loader Rock Usb”.follow instruction on step 3 here  http://www.arctablet.com/blog/featured/arnova-childpad7d-g3-android-4-0-4-cwm-recovery-custom-firmware/

if you are flashing an .img file with Rockchip_Batch_Tool_v1.7...follow instruction on this STEP 4 of this threadhttp://www.arctablet.com/blog/featured/flashing-arnova-g2-rockchip-2918-rockchip-flashing-tool/

i also was able to also get into the blank loading screen once...on step 4 ..I release only the power button when arnova shows up then release reset  and when to android logo,,,then pressed reset againg

Well done to you vcurbel! seems like there are many of us trying to flash on the 'new' childpad. i have just started investigating today and old methods have failed. i am looking forward to trying your method - but not sure i can face doing it today... would like to see if others with more experience can also replicate it.

FrownI tried vcurbel's process with no success whatsoever. My computer recognises it as an arnova device each time it is connected - reset or not pressed.

When I tried the reset, power button combination as detailed by vcurbel it just seemed to start the login process on childpad again. first arnova logo, then childpad logo and then the android (but only the screen telling me USB is connected). No different to normal startup without reset button.

When i look in the device manager, two arnova drivers are listed (no unknown device), attempt to update it using the rockchip one also fails as windows 8 tells me the correct up to date driver is already installed.

Anyone else any luck? should i be deleteing the arnova drivers before trying the reset procedure?

Has anyone got this working yet? I Can get the Device into Vimicro superdrive mode and tried to flash it with a old vortex .pak file with MPtools but it will ither fail or error, And my device is still stuck on boot screen! I have also tried the reset + power and all the other combinations but nothing! It will just skip the bootloader and go back to the boot logo. If anyone could please help that would be amazing! Or tell me what .pak file or settings I need to chose in MPtools! Thanks!
