No problem Steve ;)

Thanks for your confirmation: at the moment, kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050g-2G.zip seems giving only 500MB with our device ;)

I think we will be soon pleasantly surprised from admin with new corrected versions of firmware + custom JB version with new kernel :)

Can you tell me which value you have for Internal Storage (used and free) in the bottom of the screen when you go to Settings / Apps ?

Also, I am a bit lost with the device versions, which model works with kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050g-2G.zip

and which stock firmware works with that tablet ?

Can someone take care of making a summary of Childpad model number / Product type (Alvin/BigBuckBunny) / working firmware (stock and  custom). That should help me to find a proper naming scheme for future ChildPad firmwares.

Cheers.

So I use the kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050g-2G.zip and it works with Stock Rom 9/26, too.

It is a tablet without Chips. Model:502153 SC123909124

Internal Storage use 129MB free 1,8GB but under Settings/Memory is total Memory 567MB APPS 884MB OTHER 104MB and available Memory 136MB.

Its a Pad from Amazon Germany.

I'm also with Buck Bunny version (no Chipmunk) Model:502153 SC 124304014

and I tried almost all kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050X-2G.zip beggining with letter "d" that first introduced touch function "repair"coming with new kernel from 26/09...

All versions worked well except that with many I had memory problem, Nand Flash wont mount (what is this nand flash anyway??? part of internal storage ?) and internal storage shows different values... I'm currently on Arctablet custom JB 4.1 with 26/09 and have no problems with storage. I will try later to flash few different versions of kasty-arnchildpadc and will edit this post with values for internal storage...

kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050d-2G.zip - in Storage settings internal storage 565 MB / in Apps settings scale shows 114 Mb used 1.9 Gb free

kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050f-2G.zip - in Storage settings internal storage 565 MB / in Apps settings scale shows 114 Mb used 1.9 Gb free

kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050g-2G.zip - in Storage settings internal storage 565 MB / in Apps settings scale shows 112 Mb used 1.9 Gb free

AN7DG3-CP20120919EV2.3.zip (kernel replaced with kernel extracted from kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050g-2G.zip) with parameter 1.5G - in Storage settings internal storage 1,48 GB, nand flash 1,05 GB / in Apps settings scale shows internal storage 89 Mb used 1.4 Gb free + sd card storage 104Kb used 1,1 Gb free

I may have make some improvement in our problematic 565Mb firmware, so please yoou are all encouraged to try this out and especially for admin to consider it in order to pin point the problem...

I took update.img file from kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050g-2G.zip and extracted it with RK29xxImageTools_v2.1. Then I took parameter-1G file from AN7DG3-CP20121012OMA4.1 (file is in folder ROM/Loader/) and copied it into folder where I extracted firmware replacing original parameter file (parameter-1g must be renamed to parameter). Then I packed files again getting wendal_new.img file. I flashed Childpad with this file using RKBatchtool and...VOILA internal storage 1.5 GB !!!

Success even though I have no idea how it worked especially when I took 1GB parameter file and got 1.5 instead! :)

My dear Childpad fellows, I will try to thoroughly write down my thoughts about storage problem with latest firmwares from arctablet. It will be a long one so please bear with me :)

Some of my assumptions may be wrong (due to lack of technical knowledge or due to different version of Childpad) so I encourage fellow admins and other users to shed some more light if they're able to...

I will discuss 2 observations/possible solutions:

1. Our assumption that we have just 500Mb available space may be utterly wrong. We have 2 sources of info about available space on childpad: Settings/Storage and Settings/Apps.

In Settings/Storage I get always info that available space is 500Mb. In Settings/Apps there is small graphic display that shows how much space is taken for apps from maximum available space. And there I'm getting info that I have 1.9GB available space. So only fact is that info about maximum space available is false. The question is WHERE? Do we have only 500Mb or 1.9Gb indeed as admins intended to incorporate in firmware?

Only way to be 100% sure is to try to install some huge app or many smaller apps that go beyond 500MB space. If after 500Mb system says "Stop not more space available" than we know that info in Settings/Storage is correct and we have a problem. If its possible to install/copy more than 500Mb than info in Settings/Apps is correct and firmware actually works well and there is only question of cosmetic problem (showing correct info about space on both places in settings). Can someone please try to test this as I wont have childpad in hands for couple of days...

If we have indeed 2Gb than I dont care for display info as long I have 2GB space :) After that you can use Link2SD app in order to copy some of data from internal storage to your external card so those 2GB could be more than enough to have many apps installed :) If we have actually really just 500Mb space than admins should try to fix this through playing with parameter file I assume (my experiment with parameter file from JB4.1 firmware did indeed change info about storage: 1G-parameter gave me 1.5Gb in Settings/Storage and 1Gb in Settings/Apps). Other way to make things better is to give us additional virtual drive "Nand Flash"...

2. I have noticed that in JB4.1 and ICS4.0.4 versions of firmware user gets apart of internal storage space (internal storage space value differs as you can choose 500MB, 1GB and 1.5Gb parameters) 1Gb of additional virtual drive "Nand Flash" mounted. I dont have a clue if this "Nand Flash" comes as custom made solution from arctablet people or from Cyogen mod but ONLY when you have "Nand Flash" mounted you get suddenly option to move some data to SD Card (this is native option in Android I believe and when you have "Nand Flash" mounted it shows automatically in Settings/Apps and then click on individual Apps and you will see option "Move to SD Card".

As I understand system recognize this "Nand  Flash" drive as SD Card (do not be confused, this is NOT your physical external SD Card) and gives you possibility to move some of data from internal storage to this virtual drive...Nand Flash doesnt get mounted on all versions of kasty-arnchilpadc-40-050X-2G.zip firmwares and thatswhy we never get this option in Settings (to move some data to SD Card).

Using Nand Flash may be solution if admins cant get internal storage bigger than 500Mb but also if our internal storage is 2Gb indeed mounting additional 1Gb  or 500Mb as Nand Flash would go as I understand beyond 2GB boundary and would "leech" more space from internal space...I dont know what is maximum that you can pull off out of 4GB but it seems that you get the most of it in combination of parameter 1,5Gb for internal storage and additional 1Gb for Nand Flash. It is tempting but I must say that using of Nand Flash looks a bit as dirty solution to me cos I couldnt always get clear picture where what goes and sometimes it just stopped to install applications even if I had enough space on both drives...Also using of Link2SD was a bit complicated too or maybe thatswhy I had problems and when we have this "Nand Flash" using of Link2SD is not possible/advisable...

There you go, if you're not sleeping already I will be happy to hear your thoughts, opinions and solutions :)

Wow, that's a long one, thanks for taking time on this Wink

The first thing I can say, before digging more in your message and having a look at my custom firmwares, is that the 2 GB, if I made no mistakes building the firmware should be real, as they are configured in the file used by the firmware to setup the partitions. The /data partition, which is were the installed application go should be set to 2 GB, this is the value you normally see as Internal storage in Settings / Apps.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I haven't tried to allocate more than 2 GB to /data, that may be doable, but the space is quite limited on a device with 4 GB storage space. (that also includes all Android system files, cache, ...)

The following users say thank you to admin for this useful post:
