With a dead android like this shown on the screen it means that your are in the wrong recovery mode. Wink Please make sure you are follow all the steps from the flashing procedure, the tablet needs to be connected to the pc before you put something in the reset pinhole and press (once) the power button.

- i switch of the tablet (leave the usb cable in)

- then i enter a paperclip in the reset pinhole (keep pressed in)

- then i press the power button

Still i only have a black screen.

When you enter recovery mode, unknown device should appear on the pc. Just go to your device manager and llook whether there is one. And the tablet screen should stay black, so it saeems to me like you are doing the right thing. Wink

It took me also a while to be at the right spot, but a black screen is the right place to be. Make sure to have the flashing app on your PC visible. You will notice that right after having pushed the reset and power for 2 seconds, that the first block on the flashing app becomes green and your device still has a dark screen.

The "dead android" is the google recovery state I think. Confused

Hope it works now Smile

Hi,

I think I managed to bring the tablet into recovery mode. It is visible in the device manager as "unknow".

Still I don't have a green block on the flashing app, and I'm also not prompted to install new hardware.... What can i still do wrong??

Thanks!

You are in the right direction.Wink Now, in device manager, right click on the uknown device and then select update device driver(or something like that, don't have an English windows). After that you just select the rk driver and it should start showing up as rk29 device. Also the RkBatchtool should start showing a green block and you should be able to flash the firmware.

Let us know how this goes. Wink

Hi, just 1 more question afther having succesfully (and finally Laugh) installed the 1G files.

When I look at the device on my explorer, it looks like I end up with a storage capacity of 1,56G.

I think it used to be around 2,02 G before the flashing procedure. Is this normal?

I want to use the adb logcat (on ubuntu) but it seems that adb devices is not finding the childpad. I did turn on the USB debugging and I'm as root on the linux device. If I could get adb working I might dig into the errors when trying to get an google app working :-)

It should work properly on windows, don't know how it works with Ubuntu. However, for Windows you need the adb driver:

http://www.arctablet.com/blog/featured/adb-driver-update-for-archos-arnova-devices/

If something simillar is also on Ubuntu and you have the driver, you will have to add those two lines in the winusb? file:

;;; Arnova ChildPad
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0E79&PID_1459
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0E79&PID_1459&MI_01

Sorry for a little bit late answer(it's summer now Smile), but it's normal indeed. Your total device capacity is around 4GB. Then you have different partitions - for system, for apps, user data etc. What the 1G firmware does is take 512MB from the user data partition and add it to the apps partition. Otherwise all the vendors would put like 1TB apps partition. Wink

Hi,

- To connect adb with ubuntu, you need to add a file in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules containing

SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0ff9", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev" # ADB
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0c87", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev" # Recovery
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0fff", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev" # Fastboot
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0c94", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev" # ???
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ENV{PRODUCT}=="e79/*", MODE="0666" , GROUP="plugdev" # archos
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="2207", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

- Then, verify that your user is in plugdev group.

- Restart udev  (sudo service udev restart) or reboot your computer.

- Plug your chidpad with debugging option.

- adb logcat should now work.

I'm very sorry for my "pebcak". Embarassed I had only the googles' old appinventory installed which contains adb but not the whole SDK set.

So last night, I now followed the instructions found on archosfans.com which worked as a charm. Laugh

Now my quest in regards of the calendar and contact issue can start Wink

In 2 weeks my kids childpad will arrive from germany

hopefully with capacitive screen ;)
I've made the descission to buy based on this website. Cause i dont want a tablet where i cant install games from google play. I have many apps from my phone i would like to transfer to the childpad so i can have my phone alone :)

The guide doesnt specify HOW to make a backup of the rom in the childpad before "upgrading" it.

So there is no rush but a couple of questions.

1. can i make a backup of the childpad before upgrading  - like nandroid on phone - just with the rockchip software?

2. it doesnt seem like anyone have asked this but - can i use my current google play account? Dont know if I can use it on 2 different "machines"

3. Is this upgrade working without problems?

Thank you for the unlock and the great guide and site!!

The upgrade works as a charm. And the current version of the rom is ok and stable. You can indeed use 1 google play account on multiple devices. I have my account for my Samsung Galaxy S2 configured on my kids chilpad. That way I can control if they might install stuff which could not be ok. Or remotely install new games when something funny pops up. Or force updates so they do not need to worry.

The original rom is free for download from the vendors website. So if your not happy with the rom or you like to return it stock for repair, then you can easely flash it back. About your personal setting, I dont know if the default playstore is supporting titanium backup. ;-) I simply did the easy flash first so that I had root access and then I installed titanium backup to have all data backuped up. Afterwards I performed the full flashing with the 1Gb app storage. Maybe that methode can help you.

Cheers,

Good to hear that the upgrade is stable and that the account thing works..

Great fast response on a great forum

Thank you.

However the original rom aint available from vendors website, since its capasitive and its only the resitive version available, correct me if im wrong..

The easyflash to get root and then titanium backup sounds great.

The 1 gb flash ... well thats what im hoping for will work since i can always store their videos on micro SD..

Again thank you for the fast response and answer!
