ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery easy install for RK3066 and RK3188 -- TWRP/CWM Flash-Tool and root for RK3288
Please donate to support OMA and CrewRKTablets firmware work, thank you !

ARCHOS 97 Carbon is an Android 4.0 ICS tablet featuring a great 9.7" multipoint IPS screen, Rockchip RK2918 CPU and 1 Gb of RAM. The device comes unrooted and with a limited space for applications (500 Mb), we have modified the stock firmware to add full root, with write access to /system and 2 Gb extended space for applications. Guess what, this firmware works on Arnova 9 G3 too !
ARCHOS 97 Carbon custom firmware features
Stock firmware offers about 500 Mb storage space to install applications
Our custom firmware extends it to 2 Gb
Testing our ARCHOS 97 Carbon rooted custom firmware on the Arnova 9 G3
Install procedure
Before starting, please make sure you backup all your existing apps, data and files that are on your tablet as they will be erased during the flash process. Also make sure your device is connected to the power.
Step 1. Download
Kasty custom firmware download (version 0.42) |
---|
kasty-arc97carbon-40-042-2G.zip |
This firmware is specific to the ARCHOS 97 CARBON and Arnova 9 G3 and should not be installed on other devices. WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE. THIS FIRMWARE UPDATE IS USED AT YOUR OWN RISK. WE RECOMMEND TO FLASH THIS FIRMWARE ONLY IF YOU ARE ABLE TO RESCUE A BRICKED DEVICE USING ROCKCHIP FLASHING TOOLS. |
Download the file above and extract the custom firmware image (update.img) on your computer hard drive.
Step 2. Install and run Rockchip Flashing tool
Please follow the Rockchip Flashing tool procedure: that will explain how to download Rockchip flashing tool, unpack the archive, put your device into flashing mode and flash the custom firmware file that you have unpacked in Step 1.
Step 3. ARCHOS 97 CARBON / Arnova 9 G3 flashing and restart
After Rockchip flasher has transferred the custom firmware to the tablet, the device will restart and install the firmware. Finally you will be back to Arnova default startup wizard.
You will find the 3 easy steps of the installation procedure in the following video, see how to get Google Play and root to the Arnova 9 G3 in less than 10 minutes, it works the same on the ARCHOS 97 Carbon.
Let us know how it works for you in our ARCHOS 97 Carbon forum.
Great thanks to BlueSKYRiver member on our forum for his help with the firmware dump and tests.

One minor bug is that the battery level does not seem to be working on the Arnova 9 G3. Â Could be just me, but it sat at 100% for almost a whole day, then the tablet just switched off on me. Â Needed to plug it in to get it going again.
Maybe its just my tablet, do I need to reset something to get it to work again?
I haven't had time to check for that yet, will do when possible.
It may be hardware related where the battery related hardware on the Carbon could be different than the Arnova 9 G3.

Well, I managed to brick mine. Rockchip recognised the device as 5-3, I attempted to update which failed. I rebooted the machine, the android chap came on, and it's just stuck on the Archos logo. There must be something I can do, right? I tried restoring it with the image from the Archos website, but that failed too.

Oh dear, not good.
How long did you leave it? I remember straight after installing the firmware it took absolutely ages to boot. Â I thought I'd bricked, then got distracted by a phone call. Â When I cam back to it 10 or 15 mins later it was sitting on the first-boot wizard screen.

Okay, I just reflashed it again, and I think it's okay. It's rebooting, slowly, the Archos logo has that shiny highlight flowing over it, which it didn't before. I'm going for a brew.... Wait, it's done it Reflashed with the original image mind, not the rooted one... I'll give it another bash

Hello,
How many of you have already successfuly root their Carbon 97 with this new image ?
I'm wondering to root mine, at least to get full access (RW) on my external_SD and USB memory sticks but I'm little bit affraid by seeing that the Kasty custom uncompressed image size is 368 MB although the original one on Archos site is only 278MB. A difference of 90MB sounds me greater than necessary for this kind of patch and recommend me to be more prudent that I am generally.
Does someone have any idea about other undocumented software or features included in the new image ?
Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences or feelings
There doesn't seem to be many Archos 97 Carbon owners, so far I have one feedback of success with our custom firmware on this machine. You can also consider the Arnova 9 G3 feedbacks as the tablets are very similar in term of hardware. I actually only test on 9 G3, but got confirmation the firmware was working from a 97 Carbon owner before publiclly releasing this firmware.
As for the file size difference, it's related to some changes in the firmware image structure on our custom firmware. We're more into cleaning the unnecessary applications than adding unneeded programs, so don't expect (unless we mention it) anything other than the stock system with root, r/w system, extended space for apps ...
Cheers.
