Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on the Arnova 10 G2, it’s there, finally !
We have a improved an existing ICS firmware to add root, Google Play Store support, CWR Recovery, init.d like scripts, 2 GB storage space for apps and few bugs fixes to the Arnova 10 G2
.

Due to popular demand, even if work on this firmware is not completely finished we are now publishing a first release. Keep in mind that the Arnova 10 G2 has limited resources, 512 MB of RAM is a bit too low to offer perfectly smooth ICS operation, we recommend killing tasks frequently or using a task killer to help with slowdown situations.

Arnova 10 G2 ICS custom firmware features

  • clean installation of Google Play Store with additionnal fixes so more application are visible/compatible
  • root access with SuperSU 1.25 (free version) by XDA developer Chainfire
  • extended space for applications (/data) to 2 GB
  • updated busybox v1.21.0.git (2012-11-29)
  • Unix like init.d boot scripts support, more details on init.d scripts here
  • optional Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) support, courtesy of fenice57, thank you !
  • Built-in ArcTools application for optional packages installation and Recovery reboot
  • Support the project!

    Install procedure

Before starting, please make sure you backup all your existing apps, data and files that are on your tablet as they will be erased during the flash process. Also make sure your device is connected to the power.

We are publishing two versions of the custom firmware. The default one comes with stock recovery, there is another build with CWM Recovery (thanks fenice57)
If you don’t know what CWM is or don’t need it, just use the stock version, which should fit most users.

    Step 1. Download

Kasty custom firmware download (version 0.463)

    kasty-ez_arn10g2-40-0463-2G.zip

    (stock recovery version)

    kasty-ez_arn10g2-40-0463-CWM_2G.zip

    (CWM recovery version)

This firmware is specific to the Arnova 10 G2 and should not be installed on other devices.

WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE.

THIS FIRMWARE UPDATE IS USED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

This firmware should be installed using ROCKCHIP FLASHING TOOLS.

Download the file above and extract the custom firmware image (update.img) on your computer hard drive.

Step 2. Install and run Rockchip Flashing tool

Please follow the Rockchip Flashing tool procedure: that will explain how to download Rockchip flashing tool, unpack the archive, put your device into flashing mode and flash the custom firmware file that you have unpacked in Step 1. Use Restore button in Rockchip flasher to make sure your device gets properly erased.

Step 3. Arnova 10 G2 flashing and restart

After Rockchip flasher has transferred the custom firmware to the tablet, you will have to restart the tablet to finish installing the firmware. Finally you will be back to Arnova default startup wizard.

Notes for Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) users

Don’t worry about the messages saying "E:Can't mount /cache/recovery..." on the CWM screen at first boot.
Choose ">Wipe data/factory reset" by pushing the hardware Vol- / Vol+ button on your tablet to move the cursor down/up, use Power button to select.
On the second screen, use again the tablet hardware buttons to select "> Yes -- delete all user data".
Let the tablet format the /data and /cache partitions.
Once "Data wipe complete." message appears, scroll to "> Reboot system now" option.
From a running Android system, you can use ArcTools to reboot into Recovery, start ArcTools application, select “Reboot” button in the upper toolbar, choose “Reboot Recovery”, then click on “Select Reboot” button. If SuperSU access request window shows, click on “Grant” button to allow ArcTools to reboot your system.

    Firmware installation video

The following video demonstrates the 3 easy steps of the installation procedure to get Android 4 ICS with Google Play Store and root to your Arnova 10 G2 in just a few minutes. The video shows the procedure for the Arnova 9 G2, but it’s very similar for the 10 G2.

    2. When using Rockchip, even if it does not find the driver yet…
Launch Rockchip, when you reset your Arnova 10G2, by pressing simultaneously,
“ON” and “Volume +”, and maintaining “Vol+” at some moment
the “icon marked 1″ on the Rockchip PC screen turn green, at that moment,
take your fingers off your the tablet buttons… and your tablet will be ready to
receive the option “restore” firmware to upload…
nothing is shown on the tablet screen but it is ready to accept upload…
load the image into the Rockchip program and press “restore” on the Rockchip choices, nothing will display on the tablet but you will see the percentage of upload
growing up to 100%, let the tablet connected and it will automatically
reboot and pass in “robot” mode, you will see the formatting process and it will proceed up to a final reboot with the new firmware installed…

This is the best and only way to get the firmware using the 2Gbytes partition for
application afterwards,… if you do it using “upgrade” or using a copy of update.img
on a memory stick, you won’t have a full reformat on your tablet and won’t be able
to benefit fully of this firmware…

      Enjoy…

    8. Hi,
I’ve just flashed my tablet with this firmware. So far so good.

I have managed to turn the tablet into a sat/nav with the use of a GlobalSat ND100s GPS USB dongle, YouAreHere GPS app and Osmand Free app.
This would not have been possible except for your great work in producing this firmware.

i do a bit of travelling and WiFi is not always possible so would it be possible to include support for 3G in any forthcoming update? I think I read somewhere that Fenice57 had managed to provide support for some usb modems for this tablet? Not sure if this is correct though.

      Once again, great work

    9. Hola Buenos dias:

estoy intentando hacer este proceso pero cuando voy al rockchip mi tablet no entra en parpadeo, automaticamente entra en modo depuracion usb, y no me sale la conectividad de la unidad y claro no puedo actualizar alguin me puede ayudar gracias.

    10. Hi.just installed this software on arnova 10B g2 and doesn’t work.something wrong with display(I can see the screen for one second only when I press the power button)Can you help please?

    11. Hi,

I have a problem with my device. I am trying to use Rock Chip en use the entire methode but both my computer keep rejectiing the drivers from rockchip. They both say that the unknown device -driver is just as good as the provided driver OR saying that the driver is not compatible with the system (i have 64 bits system and i know the abbreviation is X64 en X 86) i am pretty good with computers but i have no idea what is wrong.

PS: i already installed the new firmware but i wanna go back to the old one because this firmware sucks no games work etc.

    12. Hi, I have tried for several hours now, but the rockchip tool will not recognize my device, I think it is because I can’t install the driver (tried with w7 and xp). Can someone please help?
I really don’t know what to do, and have tried everything I can think of, including everything I have found on Google so far!

      Ben

    13. hi guys, i need your help! i made all the procedure with rockchip tool in order to install 4.0.4 kristy version and in firmware check after download wrote ( download firmware fail)
      Any help? thank you!

    14. I’ve just bought a ARNOVA last month for 99€ with already an Android ICE CREAM SANDWICH 4.0. But because the procedure to install android market was not working I decided to install the new firmware. I’ve done the calibration many time (in the wizard) and I have still a problem that I can understand when using a “paint” application: the mapping of touch screen and real screen is incorrect, like there is 1 cm difference at the end. So button from one side are ok but on the opposite side it is quite problematic. Do you know how to fix that ? Thank you, good work !

      • Hi, same for me. The between the location I touch and the location where it is recognized there is approx. 1 cm of difference. I couldn`t find any tool to eliminate this difference. Any solution?
        Thanks!

        • Hello Kvilmos, it is exactly my problem…I have tried to install many firmware on it and here is the result:
          -arn10g2-23-20 (block at calibration)
          -arnova10_g2_finless _v1_5d (touchscreen doesn’t work)
          -arnova10g2_finless22b_pro (touchscreen doesn’t work)
          -kasty-ez_arn10g2-23-12 (block at calibration)
-arnovatech 10g2 oct 2011 (block at calibration)
-kasty_oma124-arn10g2-41-067-2G (small pb calib + camera doesn’t work)
-kasty-ez_arn10g2-40-0463-CWM_2G (small pb calib + camera doesn’t work)
          -kasty-ez_arn10g2-40-0463-2G (small pb calib)
          -update.AR10G2.cramfs.2G.MorkaMod.v1.15 (touch screen blocked)

So the “best” one for me is this one:
          -kasty-ez_arn10g2-40-0463-2G (small pb calib)

I have to say my arnova10G2 is quite new (bought on 20th june) with already android 4 on it (by arnova). My asumption is that the touchscreen chip is not exactly the same as previous 10 G 2 ???

I wish I could find the original ROM of my arnova wit android 4 (at least the touch screen worked well)

    15. sorry but in my opinion its a terrible CFW rom , the calibration its realy bad, slow as hell and when im trying to type the keyboard letters expempel A the letter to the side B types itself as i say is a calibration problem please put some tweaks or something and fix calibration , i cannot even restore to the original vertion its keep me reboot all the time and hangs on calibration again :(

      • In our forum, there are many users that are satisfied with this firmware.
It may happen that you haven’t flashed or installed the firmware correctly, you need to use Rockchip Batch Tool and Restore button.

        • actually i have follow the steps perfectly and i know how to flash i think you need to improve the mod of the rom still have problems with the calibration and its terrible slow the calibration problem its a pain ..sorry but just tell you my problem if other have better luck well i dont realy know why….. its the reason why im here now , to get help ;)

    16. my thoughts before installing this were that it was going to run slow as you guys said and that I would have to keep on closing apps a lot well actually it runs better then the stock. But only problem I have is that I can not change mic volume it says something like kernel is missing /proc/mic control needed to adjust mic levels. and that some programs force clothes like google voice and some other apps.. but other then that its good and faster then I thought. Thanks to all that worked on this

    17. Good morning,

I’ve followed the procedure for my tablet, but it didn’t worked at all. Now my tablet doesn’t show anything: the screen doesn’t work. If I press the on button, for a second I can see that it’s on, and it halts on tablet calibration, but then the screen turn off again. I’ve tried to flash again the tablet changing the usb cable, but with no result. I’ve tried to restore the original image, too, but again with no result (it hangs after “Arnova” screen). Can you tell me what I need to do te rescue my tablet?

      Thanks in advance.

    20. Can’t wait to have a version for the 10b G2 Dual Touch, as the stock image is crap. The Kasty EZ firmware, which I needed to recover after trying yo install this image without checking compatibility, is already a lot better.

    21. Hello.
I have an Arnova Family Pad 13 (single 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor) and ICS 4.0.3 and it has read/write issues with non-stock file managers.
Would like to root it to stop these problems but I cannot find the way to do it (tried already .. tried already UniversalAndroidRoot & z4root).
Do you think I could use this firmware??
Thank you in advance for the help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    22. Hi i have just tried this on my Arnova 10 g2 and after the formatting system appears on the Arnova screen it then just goes to a graphic of a circle with CUSTOM arctablet.com FIRMWARE and nothing happens can anyone help what can I do.

      • Hi. I’ve hovered in the background enjoying this site for a while, but have joined due to ICS being made for the Arnova 10G”……great work, very impressed indeed!
After having played with it for a couple of hours, the only glitch I’ve found so far ( tho I’m no expert lol!! ) is that the sleep screen is inverted i.e. it’s white instead of black?
        Regardless, superb job guys….thank you!

    23. Can someone help ? What am I doing wrong ?

      Tablet is connected to PC.
Downloaded both files above to desktop
Unzipped the rockchip file and opened RKbatchTool.exe (as admin)
      Rebooted tablet using reset button

It just boots back up, does calibration and then nothing happens in the RKbatchTool screen ?? I don’t get a connected device as in the video

      Thanks if anyone can help

      • Tracy….hi.
No expert here, but I think I connected up to the laptop with the usb cable, then shut down the tablet, then hold down “volume up” botton, then insert pin into reset hole. Hold all for a few seconds and the laptop should bong to tell you it’s found the tablet.
        Hope that helps hun :-)
