Announced to arrive by summer about eight months ago, the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the ARCHOS  45/50 Helium  and ARCHOS 50c Oxygen phones tablets is no more, as the vendor has mentioned yesterday on their Facebook that there won’t be any KitKat updates for the current range of Helium and Oxygen devices.

archosheliumnokitkat

Here are the official words from ARCHOS Worldwide Facebook(in French):

archosnokitkat-nowrmkThe reasons for suddenly cancelling the update plans are not given. Shame that that on the same Facebook account, KitKat was promised to arrive in a few weeks just one month ago:

archosnokitkat-2-nowrmkInstead of offering the KitKat update, Archos is now advising users to buy the updated “B” phones from the Helium range in order to take advantage of the KitKat OS. That is quite ridiculous, taking in the account that the 45b and 50b Helium only differ from the original models by having slightly faster CPU (Snapdragon 410 instead of Snapdragon 400) and support for Dual-Sim. The 45b Helium is even a cut-down version of the original 45 with having 512MB of RAM less.

45bhelium-nowrmk

The resulting situation gives the impression that Archos does not take its customers seriously. The latest firmware updates for the Oxygen and Helium phones date from June, barely three months after the release. The users that bought the Helium and Oxygen phones keeping in mind the 4.4 update are now left empty handed. The question is, will the story be the same for 50 Diamond, the flagship killer from Archos to arrive at beginning of 2015 with the Lollipop update?

While at first we thought it was cancelled, it now looks like Archos is preparing the 35b Titanium for release towards end of November/beginning December. Does the 35b Titanium offer something interesting? Well, it comes with a dual-core processor and runs Android 4.4 KitKat, has both front and back cameras as well as dual sim support, making it quite an attractive option for people looking for a compact smartphone that do not want to spend much. The 35b Titanium should be available for 59€.

After releasing the 50 Diamond 4G yesterday, Archos today introduced a bunch of tablets in the Elements range. Revealed by Arctablet weeks ago, Archos 70c Cobalt is now added to the Cobalt range. In the Neon range, we already leaked the 101c Neon and today, 90b Neon and 101b Neon were added to the line-up.  The Xenon range is updated with 70b Xenon and 80b Xenon models, also covered by Arctablet some time ago. While the new models are not a big surprise, let’s give them a quick look. ;)

Archos 70c Cobalt

archos_70ccobalt-2

Archos 70c Cobalt is the cheapest tablet from Archos being offered for just 59.99€ in Archos store. It features:

  • 7” multi-touch capacitive display with 1024×600 resolution, 512MB RAM
  • Android 4.4.4 Operating system
  • Powered by Dual-Core Rockchip CPU Cortex A9 @ 1 GHz
  • Google™ certified with access to Google Play™ and over 1 million apps & Archos Multimedia applications
  • 8 GB flash memory with an expandable Micro SD Slot
  • 2500 mAh battery

Archos 70b Xenon

archos_70bxenon_intro

Selling at 79€, the 70b Xenon is actually not much different from the Archos 70 Copper with the addition of the IPS screen being the only difference.

  • Stay connected anywhere thanks to built-in H+/3G+ (voice and data) & Wifi
  • 7” IPS screen with 1024×600 resolution
  • Dual SIM, un-SIM-locked, flexibility to use SIM-cards of any provider
  • Android 4.4.4 Operating system
  • Google™ certified, full access to Google Play™ Store and over 1 million apps
  • MediaTek Dual Core CPU
  • Dual camera
  • 2800 mAh battery

Archos 90b Neon

archos_90bneon_intro

For 99€, the Neon line-up is in sight with the 90b Neon being the smallest one of the new models.

  • Quad-core Allwinner CPU ARM Cortex A9 @ 1.2 GHz & Quad-core GPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 9” capacitive multi-touch screen TN with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution
  • Google™ certified and Android™ 4.4 with access to Google Play™ Store
  • A premium multimedia experience, thanks to ARCHOS applications
  • 8 GB flash memory combined with microSD expandable storage
  • 4000 mAh battery

Archos 101b Neon

archos_101bneon_intro

Also selling for 99€, the 101b Neon tablet is slightly larger than the 90b, offers a Rockchip CPU instead of the Allwinner one and comes with 1GB RAM instead of 512MB.

  • Quad-core Rokchip CPU ARM Cortex A9 @ 1.4 GHz & Quad-core GPU
  • 10.1” capacitive multi-touch TN screen with 1024 x 600 pixels
  • Google™ certified and Android™ 4.4 with full access to Google Play™ Store
  • A premium multimedia experience thanks to ARCHOS applications
  • 8GB flash memory combined with micro-SD expandable storage
  • 5000 mAh

Archos 80b Xenon

archos_80bxenon_intro

If you ask us, the 80b Xenon is offered a little bit too expensive. Still, for 149€ you get a well-balanced 3G enabled device(we have to say that the battery capacity is really low for a 3G tablet) which offers the following:

  • Stay connected anywhere thanks to built-in H+/3G+ (voice and data) & Wifi
  • Vibrant IPS screen with 1280×800 resolution
  • Dual SIM, un-SIM-locked, flexibility to use SIM-cards of any provider
  • Quad-core MediaTek processor & 1GB RAM
  • Android 4.4.4 Opetating system
  • Google™ certified, full access to Google Play™ Store and over 1 million apps
  • Dual camera
  • 3600 mAh

All models are now visible on Archos store, but some of them will only start shipping in November.

Following the teaser on monday and our revealing of the new smartphone, today Archos officially announced its new 4G-enabled 199.99 smartphone. As expected by Arctablet, a photo from our colleagues from ArchosLounge.net shows that the 50 Diamond is a rebrand of the K-Touch Touch 7. Still, Archos is the first to announce a 4G smartphone with eight cores SoC at a price of 199.99€. The only thing is that the 50 Diamond will only hit the market early 2015 and at that time, we might see simillar solutions from other brands.

archos-50diamond-nowrmk

Anyways, the Archos 50 Diamond has mid to high-end specifications with a five inch FHD IPS screen giving it a density of 440 dpi and the new 64-bit Snapdragon 615 octo-core CPU. Connectivity wise, the smartphone sports the 4G category 4 giving access to download speeds up to 150Mbps.

ARCHOS-50-Diamond

In addition to its attractive main features, the Archos 50 Diamond also features:
- 16 GB of internal storage and 2 GB of RAM
16 MP rear camera with auto focus and flash, front camera of 8 MP
2700 mAh battery and wireless charging
Dual Active SIM and micro SD card slot up to 64 GB
– Archos Multimedia applications including the reknown Video Player

Images of the K-Touch Touch 7 can be seen here and here are the full tech specs for those that are just as excited as we are. :)

One more thing…

By making use of the occasion, we would like to leak out another Archos smartphone that will be available by the end of 2014 for half the price – the Archos 45b Helium 4G. The Archos 45b Helium 4G is a slightly upgraded version of the original 45 Helium and comes with a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU, support for Dual-Sim and Android 4.4.4 Kit-Kat. Unfortunately, the new model comes with just 512MB of RAM, probably to cut down production costs. Still, for 99, the 45b Helium should be a great deal. Wiko, it’s your turn now. ;)

Pipo already introduced a strong line-up of RK3288 a few months ago and this time at Hong Kong fair, new models were introduced. In the video from our friend Charbax(ArmDevices.net), Pipo is showing the new line-up including 4G smartphones and tablets. One of them is the new Pipo P1+ with thinner lighter Retina iPad Air display and more compact form factor Huawei UltraStick support for optional 3G/4G. Also, the new 11.6″ FHD tablet is shown, along with the P9 3D model which is a glasses free 3D tablet.  Windows 8 models are present in the video with the W6 tablet being the newest addition to the line-up.

Next to the Rockchip RK3288 SoC, the new PiPO P1+ feauteres a lighter Retina 9.7 inch screen, 2MPx/8MPx cameras, GPS, Bluetooth, OTG, gyroscope, HDMI via MHL and a 9800 mAh battery to keep everything running. Compared to the P1, the P1 + looks to have more narrow borders and a thinner body. 16GB option will be available for 999 Yuan(about 130€), while 32GB will be offered for 1099 Yuan(about 140€)

pipop1plus-nowrmk

PiPO W6 sports an Intel Z3735F quad-core processor(up to 1.83 Ghz), 2GB of RAM next to 32GB of flash storage. 8.9 inch IPS screen features a resolution of 1920 × 1200 pixels. In terms of cameras, on the front, there is a 2 Mpx one, while an 5 Mpx one can be found on the back. And to keep everything running, there is a 6000 mAh battery built-in. The W6 should be available soon for a price of about 999 Yuan (again, about 130€) in China.

Yesterday, Loic Poirier, CEO of Archos posted a teaser of a new Archos smartphone on his twitter account. The new device is expected to be announced at CES Unveiled this Wednesday. For years, Arctablet is known for revealing Archos products first, recently with the 59 Titanium and VR Glasses  models and with this teaser, we could not let our chances go and decided give it a closer look.

archos-50newrange

While the image above shows just a small part of the phone, along with a few numbers, we were able to get quite a lot of information out of it. And because Archos is all about rebranding OEM devices these days, we decided to find out which OEM model looks simillar to the smartphone shown in the teaser.

What are the search criteria?

The smartphone has three buttons on its left side which is quite a rare combination – the volume buttons, located above the power button. The display probably features OGS technology, but the bezels are sticking out a little bit, simillar to what we have seen on the 50c Oxygen. Another thing, Archos is not making high-end devices, so no chance that we will see Adreno 440 GPU in there. What the number 440 can mean then? Well, 1920×1080 resolution gives a ppi of 440 on a 5 inch screen and given the fact that 5 inch is the most common format within Archos smartphone range, that makes sense.

With that information in mind, we decided to have a look and to see what devices are being offered by various OEM companies and one of the new models from K-Touch caught our attention – the K-Touch Touch 7. Archos already sources about half of her smartphones from K-Touch(including the 50 Helium, 50c Oxygen and others), so the new model could easily be sourced from K-Touch too. So what does the Touch 7 has to offer? To start with, the volume rockers and the power button are located on the left side.

archos-ktouch-touch7-2

Inside, there is a 64-bit (the numbers 64-bit stand for 64-bit CPU) 8-core (number 8 is explained) Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC from Qualcomm. The S615 is the first 64-bit 4G enabled(number 4 explained ;) ) CPU and consists of Quad-core 1.7GHz ARM Cortex A53 + Quad-core 1.0GHz A53. Coupled with Adreno 405 GPU, the S615 is a nice CPU for mid-range devices.

archos-ktouch-touch7-nowrmk

The Touch 7 also comes with FHD 5 inch IPS screen. There is a 16 GB of flash storage inside (number 16 explained, (Archos won’t put an 16 MPx camera)) which is expandable with another 64 GB via a microSD slot. The Touch 7 comes with 2GB of RAM and hopefully, Archos will not save on the amount of RAM this time…

archos-ktouch-touch7-3

Did we forget something? Yes, the numbers 2700 and 199 are still unexplained. Well, next to the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410-powered Archos 45b Helium and 50b Helium models priced at respectively 99EUR and 149EUR, it would be a logical thing for Archos to release a device with better specification in <200 range. So, that makes us think that the new smartphone will be available for 199EUR. And 2700 probably refers to the battery capacity of 2700 mAh, but we are not 100% sure because the battery capacity is not yet know for the Touch 7.

archos-ktouch-touch7-4

The question is are we right? Tomorrow we will know for sure. ;)

Following the 101b Neon, Archos is preparing another 10.1 inch model for the Neon range – the 101c Neon. The new model features a quad core CPU from MediaTek, 1GB of RAM, a TFT screen with 1024×600 resolution and dual cameras. Basically, for around 99€ you get 1-year-old operating system on top of 3-year-old specifications.  While the perofrmance of the 101c Neon should be sufficient for some basic tasks; If you are looking for an affordable tablet, you are better off spending your money on another device.

While the Archos VR Glasses were already shown to Arctablet last week, Archos now officially announced the product in a short PR-document. The device is a  stereoscopic 3D viewer similar to Google Cardboard fold-out cardboard smartphone mount, ARCHOS model is made of plastic and should come ready to use, no construction needed. The VR Glasses should be available for around €29.99/£24.99 by end of November this year.

archosglasses-nowrmk

Compatible with all Virtual Reality applications on iOS, Android and Windows Phone, ARCHOS’ latest wearable product is also made to free users from reality thanks to its lightweight yet robust material. The smartphone is meant to be inserted in the front side, screen facing towards the convex plastic lenses and user eyes.  The headset design should be able to host most smartphones having a screen size from 4 inches and up to 6 inches. According to ARCHOS, optimum requirements for an immersive experience are a full HD 5” smartphone with quad core processor (or higher) and motion sensors such as an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

archosglasses-2-nowrmk

With the upcoming ARCHOS Video Player update, users will also enjoy 3D videos in a stereoscopic mode on their mobile, creating the illusion of seating in a 3D movie theatre.

archosglasses-3-nowrmk

As we could test, owners of prescription glasses may not be very at ease as there is little space in the headset for the user to keep wearing the prescription glasses and there is no diopter adjustment if the user chooses not to wear glasses. Our short test of the ARCHOS product worked reasonably well and gave us a rather fun experience.  Combined with the proper head tracking and stereo visualization applications/games, this product should give interesting results for the price. Archos is also planning to launch the  ARCHOS Bluetooth game controller soon, which should add another dimension to smartphone gaming coupled with VR Glasses and Archos Mapping tool.

As a side note, this ARCHOS headset seem to be very similar to what is found on the Chinese market with devices like the ColorCross / NEJE LJ-01 $36 on dx.com.

Next to the Copper and Xenon ranges, Archos is also updating its Cobalt range to Android 4.4 Kit-Kat with the 70c Cobalt being the first model to hit the market. The Archos 70c Cobalt is also first Archos tablet to run on Android 4.4.4 and just like its predecessor, features a dual core RK3026 CPU, 512MB RAM and a 7 inch TN screen with 1024 x 600 resolution. Battery capacity of 2500 mAh is quite low for a 7 inch device, but should be sufficient for a few hours of use with these specifications.

archos-70ccobalt-nowrmk

While the 70c Cobalt is not yet announced by Archos, it is already in stock and selling from the French electronics website Cdiscount and the Dutch stores of MediaMarkt.

The last months, Archos and Wiko are busy with rolling out their updated smartphones running on Android 4.4 Kit-Kat. We decided it was time to have a closer look to what the two companies have to offer. While not everyone is familiar with Wiko, they have been a major player on the French smartphone market for a few years and are now quickly expanding across Europe. Both Wiko and Archos work together with R&D teams in China, while having headquarters in France.

In our comparison, we decided only to look at the two most interesting models in a certain price range, while also quickly mentioning the other available options.

Next to the two mentioned models, the Wiko Goa is also on the market with 3.5 inch screen (320×480 resolution) which is selling for around 65€. If you spend a little bit more, you will be able to get the Wiko Sunset or the 40c Titanium with 4 inch screens.  Both are nice entry-level smartphones for not-demanding users with the 40c Titanium being more attractive because of the better camera on the back and a larger battery. The advantage of the Wiko smartphones is that you can get them in many different colors, while Archos is often only offering one color option.

Thanks to the quad core CPU, the IPS screen and the two additional back covers, Archos 45c Platinum offers a good value for the money. Still, Wiko Lenny is an attractive option for those that would like a larger screen, despite the viewing angles being worse compared to the 45c Platinum.

Once again, Archos got a nice offer with the 50b Platinum which offers a higher resolution larger screen, better cameras and comes with a free microSD card, 2 additional covers and a crystal case worth a few euros. On the other hand, Wiko Bloom should offer better multitasking thanks to 1GB RAM and should last longer thanks to the bigger battery.

Blazingly fast, the ARCHOS 50c Oxygen features a 1.7 GHz Octa-core processor– bringing the speed and power you’ll need for your apps, games and web browsing. Also, it features a vivid IPS display with 294 ppi, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It comes with 2000 mAh, while being only 7.64mm thick. Impressed? Well, what about the Wiko Getaway? When you would put a smartphone and a bottle of champagne together, you would get the Wiko Getaway. The aluminum body in sexy silver, gold glamorous, opulent white, refined gray and ravishingly red is finished with a leather back. Très belle! While the CPU might not be as fast as on the 50c , the Getaway is thinner, features a Gorilla Glass display, has 8GB more of storage and a better camera on the back. And you don’t have to wait for the Kit-Kat update. ;)

About a month ago, Archos lowered its RRP prices for the Helium range in France – the 45 Helium would cost you only 99€, while the 5 inch version would cost you 149€. And with 45 Helium 4G priced at only 99€, it is clearly a winner over the Wiko Kite 4G smartphone available for 99€. For the same price, the 45 Helium offers a larger screen with better viewing angles, better CPU and larger battery capacity. The 45 Helium can better be compared to the Birdy 4G which is around 30€ more expensive. The specifications are more less the same with the Birdy 4G having a larger battery capacity, better front camera and better CPU, while the GPU on the 45 Helium is better. The thing is that the pricing for the Helium range in many European countries is still the same and that the Wiko models offer interesting alternatives. For Archos, it would be a logical thing to cut the RRP prices for the Helium range with the introduction of the 45b and 50b Helium models in November.

Cheap 4G | 149-199€.

On paper, the Wiko Wax is a clear winner over the Archos 50 Helium 4G: for a similar price, the Wax offering a faster processor, a display with higer pixel dinsity and a more robust protection for the screen. Still, priced at only 149€ in France, the 50 Helium 4G is a cheaper alternative for those that would like a larger screen.

What’s next?

Wiko – Wiko Highway 4G

Shown at IFA for the first time. the Wiko Highway 4G features a 5 inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage(unfortunately, no support for microSD) and a 16 Mp camera on the back. The Highway 4G sports the latest quad core Tegra 4i CPU we have seen on the Wiko Wax, now clocked at 2.0 Ghz. There is also an 2350mAh battery inside the 7.9mm thin body to keep everything running. Wiko Highway 4G is expected to hit the stores in a few weeks time and meanwhile, here is a nice hands-on video from mobilegeeks.de:

Archos – Archos 45b Helium 4G and 50b Helium 4G

According to an interview given to French website 01Net, ARCHOS CEO Loic Poirier mentioned that the company should offer Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 based devices by the end of the year instead of the Snapdragon 400 currently equipping their Helium flagship 4G LTE models (Helium 45, Helium 50 smartphones and Helium 80 tablet)

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor is based on a quad-core ARM Cortex™ A53 (supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit code) at up to 1.4 GHz per core, it supports new power efficient ARMv8-A architecture which enables improved instruction set efficiency.

The SoC comes with an Adreno 306 GPU with support for advanced APIs, including OpenGL ES 3.0, DirectX, and OpenCL.

The modem part offers integrated 4G LTE support (CAT4 with speeds of up to 150 Mbps) and we should see some specific versions of the processor with Dual SIM and Dual Active (DSDA) and Triple SIM (TSTS) support.

The Snapdragon 410 would be definitely a nice upgrade to the current Helium devices which are a bit limited in term of processor and graphic performance with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400.
