Epic Games has just released “Citadel” a real-time demonstration on Android to show their Unreal 3 graphic engine capabilities. This latest version features amazing visuals and special effects such as realistic reflections, animations vertex deformation, realistic lighting and shadows. The Citadel demo also features a benchmark mode, that lets you adjust the rendering resolution percentage and the quality settings, it shows the number of frames per seconds (FPS) to render a few scene of the demo.

ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD vs Onda V 972

Citadel demo appears to be a good opportunity to do some real-world benchmarks on the ARCHOS 97 Titanium, checking how it renders HD (2048×1440) animations compared to an Onda V 972 quad-core CPU tablet.

The benchmarks below were executed with the same settings on both machines (High quality rendering and HD mode 2048×1440 resolution scaled at 100%)

Benchmark results of 42.8 FPS on the Onda V972 vs 25.2 FPS on the ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD, show the limits of the “old” Rockchip RK3066 / Mali 400 GPU (ARCHOS Titanium) over the Boxchip Allwinner A31 quad-core processor on the Onda V972.

AndrewDB, Alok Sinha and their developer team are bringing a nice Ubuntu package for RK3066 based devices. This is basically a Pico sized (under 200 megabytes) Ubuntu Qantal 12.10 distribution for pico sized hardware, hence the name, PicUntu.
The first 0.9 RC 2 version has just been released, supporting some Rockchip RK3066 based MiniPCs such as the MK808 and UG802.

Picuntu_alok_demo1b_nowrmk

Supported hardware

The first big 0.9 release is oriented to support most common RK3066 based MiniPC such as MK808 and UG802 models. On both models, networking works with either the default internal WiFI or thru the use of an external USB Ethernet dongle. Support for other MiniPCs based on the RK3066 architecture such as the iMito MX1 / MX2 is in the works, we may even see PicUntu on some tablets as well in the future :)

PicUntu system and data files are stored outside the RK3066 device internal storage, you can use a microSD card, an USB external storage such as a Flash drive or hard disk. 4 GB storage space should be enough to store PicUntu and provide enough space for extra packages and a few users files. If you are using a SDCard, we recommend using a fast model (class 6 or better).

Download PicUntu

PicUntu files are available from Google Code rk3066-linux pages.
Another download site is available on a server actually running PicUntu, check ubuntu.g8.net
We also provide 2 mirrors for the files: mirror 1 (Europe), mirror 2 (US, rest of the world)

You need:
ug802recovkernl.img : a recovery image to flash on your RK3066 device, this image provides the Linux kernel to boot PicUntu from. Being installed as a recovery image, it can cohabit with an existing kernel that still let you run Android on your device.

pre-picuntu.sh: pre-installation script that runs from an existing Linux: it takes care of the rootfs download, network configuration and installation to the removable storage
picuntu-linuxroot-.09-RC2.1.tgz: this is the actual rootfs, in case you want to install on your own without using the pre-installation script. That will require partitioning the removable storage and manual setup for the network configuration.

The installation procedure is detailed on PicUntu website.

Here is short video of PicUntu 0.9-RC2.2 pre-installation on a MK808 RK3066 based Mini PC using a 4 GB Storage micro SD card (on /dev/sdb) The installation procedure is executed on Ubuntu 12.10, running in VMWare player / Windows 7 x64.

Installation from Android with PicuntuInstaller.apk (root required)

There also an Android application in the works to take care of PicUntu installation process, that is, download the package files, flash the recovery image on the RK3066 device and reboot to Linux. This is application is still in alpha stage, we’ll post updates when it reach a stable level.
Picuntu_installer_APK_b

Using PicUntu as a small Linux computer

When the PicUntu system installation has completed, Ubuntu packages can be added to extend the usage possibilities:
  • Media server
  • small web or mail server
  • Windows / SMB network file server
  • web browser, desktop tools such as LibreOffice
  • PicUntu distribution also comes with a full source code for the Linux kernel, so you can even rebuild one from the device itself (requires compiler tools installation).

Here is a quick demo of an early version of the package, a few weeks ago before it was named PicUntu.

Please visit us again, we’ll soon post updated videos.

The ARCHOS Titanium product line was one of main products on the manufacturer’s booth at CES 2013 last week. Featuring a Rockchip RK3066 ARM Cortex A9 CPU running at 1.6 GHz , 1 GB of RAM, an 9.7 HD (2048×1536 resolution) IPS screen , dual cameras, the 97 Titanium HD specifications are missing an HDMI output and Bluetooth connections. The ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD has full Google Play experience with Google certification and is available right now at a RRP of 249€ / $249 / £199.
On paper, having a tablet with 2048×1536 pixels HD resolution is great, the extra pixels are perfect for smooth display in ebook, web pages or movies. We’ll see later in this review that the reality is totally different on the Titanium and it does not make the HD experience such a pleasure.

ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD tablet design

Arnova 9 G3 and ARCHOS 97 Carbon heritage

The Titanium case design shares a lot with its ancestors, the ARCHOS 97 Carbon and Arnova 9 G3, some rearrangements have been made on the case to adapt the Titanium specific features (no HDMI port, higher resolution back camera)

    ARCHOS_97_Carbon_VS_Titanium_DSC_0326b

    Packaging

    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_tablet_box_DSC_0333c

The ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD packaging is similar to other Archos/Arnova products, the box contains:
    – an ARCHOS 97 Titanium HD tablet
    – an USB cable (micro USB format)
    – a power charger with three power sockets (UK, EU, US), input 100-240V, outputs 9V 2.5A with a single paper document explain how to use the plugs
charging the tablet thru the micro/USB connector does not work, as the tablet has higher power requirements
    – 3 booklets that include: a user guide, legal and safety Notices and a “need help” paper

    Tablet case, buttons and connectors

The top of the tablet offers the 3 hardware buttons for Power and Volume -/+

    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_HD_buttons_connectors_DSC_0365b

    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_connectors_DSC_0382b

The right side of the tablet holds the connectors, with, from the top to bottom: micro USB connector, audio 3.5mm jack connector, micro sdcard slot, power socket, microphone hole, power LED (dual color red/green) and reset pinhole.

    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_HD_charger_connectors_DSC_0315b

The microSD flash card is easy to insert and extract, when a card is inside, it fits well in the socket and does not overlap like in previous ARCHOS Carbon model.

    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_HD_microsd_fits_DSC_0312b

The back of the tablet case is made of aluminium metal, this material feels good and it does not catch fingerprints.
    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_tablet_back_DSC_0368b

The rear camera has a 5 Mpixels resolution, with an ARCHOS style enclosure in the chassis :)
    ARCHOS_97_Titanium_ARCHOS_style_back_camera_HD_DSC_0375b

The audio performs relatively well on the 97 Titanium, with dual speakers for a full stereo sound. We just regret that the speakers are located at the back of the device, so their sound is attenuated, especially when the tablet rests on its back.

Don’t forget to check our Youtube channel where we are publishing ARCHOS Titanium videos.

CES 2013 trade show held these last days in Las Vegas was a good year for ARCHOS in term of new product releases. We’ve seen the American launch of the ARCHOS GamePad that is selling in Europe since December 2012, a brand new product with the TV Connect and a whole bunch of Chinese models with the FamilyPad 2 device and the Titanium and Platinum lines of tablets.

    ARCHOS_Booth_CES_2013_b_nowrmk

    ARCHOS Elements Titanium line

Tablets from the Titanium product line share the same specifications as they all run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, are Google certified, they feature a Rockchip RK3066 Soc running at 1.6 GHz, Quad-core MALI 400 GPU, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of Flash storage, all come with IPS screens of various sizes and apparently have a aluminium back body. Titanium tablets should be available in March worldwide.

ARCHOS Titanium video by ARCHOS salesman video blogger, Charbax.

The cheaper ARCHOS Titanium 7″ model should be available at 119€ / $119 / £99, it seems to use a front part of the case similar to the existing Arnova 7c G3 now paint in black (thanks yousef8824).

    A bigger ARCHOS Titanium 8″ model will be available at 169€ / $169 / £149.
The ARCHOS Titanium 10.1″ model at 199€ / $199 / £169, a bit more expensive than similar models like the very well established Cube U30GT-H.

Finally, an ARCHOS Titanium 9.7″ model offering a 2048×1536 high definition screen, no HDMI output, it should soon be selling at 249€ / $249 / £199. We already mentioned in an earlier article a mitigated user experience with a similar model (CUBE U9GT5) where the RK3066 processor seems to have hard times driving the high resolution screen.

    ARCHOS TV Connect

The new TV Connect, turning an HDTV in an Android SmartTV. We got a some new informations on the specs: the HD camera resolution is a 2 Mpixels and TV Touch remote controller works thru Bluetooth.
    ARCHOS_TV_connect_all_nowrmk

    ARCHOS Platinum Elements line

This product line currently holds 2 models, an 8 inches tablet and a 9.7 inches. It can be seen as an upgrade of the Titanium tablets, as the Platinum models come with a faster processor with a Boxchip Allwinner A31 SoC (quad-core ARM Cortex A7) and 2 GB of RAM.

The 8″ model should offer a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, while the 9,7″ tablet comes with IPS HD screen of 2048 x 1536 pixels. No precise release date given

    Video by Brad Linder Liliputing.com

    ARCHOS FamilyPad 2

Finally, a product refresh of the ARNOVA FamilyPad was also shown, the old Allwinner processor got upgraded with a Rockchip RK3066.

    Who made it ?

We have a new game for you called “Who made it ?” We believe that most of the Titanium and Platinum tablets are built by other manufacturers and are just rebadged by ARCHOS. Let’s try to find which is the original manufacturer of each ARCHOS Elements tablet, everyone can contribute, just post your suggestion in the comments section below or in our forum.

Our opinion on the new products

Apart from the ARCHOS TV Connect which really shows how ARCHOS keeps innovating, the other models do not bring particular interest. Sales arguments comparing these products with Amazon Kindle, Google Nexus 7 & 10, or Ipad mini / Ipad 4 do not look very appropriate, these are different devices, with different specifications and different applications. For the Titanium line, RK3066 tablets are now about half a year old, they definitely do not provide the best performance for the price anymore.

Finally, the problem with trade shows is it’s hard to see the true face of the products, product demonstrations and journalists on the show does only seem interested in sliding homescreen or starting a web browser, which do not express a lot of the tablet speed and usability. Before buying one of those, be sure to check the device by yourself or read a real review.

Tried this with several of the onlive games, found the d-pad and left analog stick worked, but the buttons did not by default, tried mapping the buttons to the virtual pad but this bugged out the mapper on every try. Some of the problems are with the onlive app and some are with the mapper.

    GamePad Picture by Archos.

Thanks to exelletor and cajl / jbmm.fr for their support.

We earlier reported about the ARCHOS FamilyPad 2 tablet, a giant tablet with a 13.3″ screen reported on GLbenchmark pages weeks ago. It can now be seen live at the CES 2013, thanks to the Hungarian guys from tech2.hu for making a video. This tablet is a product refresh of the ARNOVA FamilyPad (don’t forget to check our review) with an updated processor (now Rockchip RK3066) and Android version Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. No price or availability have been given yet.

    ARCHOS_FamilyPad2_front_stand_c_nowrmk

Compared to an ARCHOS 80 XS, the FamilyPad 2 looks gigantic.
    Comparing_FamilyPad2_screen_with_ARCHOS80XS_b_nowrmk

Most of the specifications we grabbed earlier from the original manufacturer (YFTech) seem to be valid:
    · CPU: Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 1.6GHz
    · LCD: 13.3″; 1280×800 pixels
    · CTP: G+G
    · 1GB DDR3
    · 16 GB FLASH
    · WIFI: IEEE 802.11b/g/n
    · Dual camera: 2MPix front camera and 2MPix rear camera
    · 3D G-Sensor
    · USB HOST& HDMI 1.4
    · Battery: 10500mAh

Once again, ARCHOS is bringing consistent branding :) the original FamilyPad product was made under ARNOVA, the new model now belongs to ARCHOS, if we judge by the back of the tablet case below.
    ARCHOS_FamilyPad_2_back_b_nowrmk

We’ll see in a few weeks with a more detailed review on the ARCHOS FamilyPad 2 if the product refresh was a really success !

Thanks to yousef8824 on our forum for the tips :)

HD displays are getting more and more common on high end tablets, most recent processors easily cope with 1080p video content (1920×1080, Blu-ray Disc type resolution) but few of them are capable of playing content in higher definitions.
We have tested 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) or 2160p content video play on latest Google Nexus 10 tablet and an Onda V812, a cheap Chinese model using latest Allwinner A31 CPU (quad-core Cortex A7 running at 1 GHz). The display on the Nexus 10 offers a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, on the Onda V812 it’s just 1024×768. Playing 4K UHD on these screens won’t use the full display resolution as the video will be down-sampled to fit on the screen, but we found it interesting to have a look at the decoding capabilities of each device. With our quick test, you will discover how the cheap Onda tablet is really good at decoding 4K UHD video…

    4K UHD play test video

Tested Video files specifications, as given by MediaInfo version 0.7.61:
The first test file is a 2160p video at 50 mbps, playing is almost smooth on the Onda V812 while the Nexus 10 is having hard times the video looking like a slide-show with just a few frames rendered every second.

Our opinion about the ARCHOS97 Titanium HD

We are quite hesitant with this kind of setup, having some experience with the Cube U9GT5 tablet which offers a similar configuration. Based on our feedback with the Cube and current firmware available on this machine (and other models with identical hardware: Chuwi V99, Visture V4HD, Yuandao N90 FHD) we have the feeling that current processor speed is just too limited to handle the high resolution of the screen. We believe that a Quadcore CPU preferably with ARM Cortex A15 or A7 architecture would be more appropriate.

Here is a quick video showing the HD screen on the Cube U9GT5.

OpenAOS team gave us a nice Christmas present with their “Crow” update, their port of CyanogenMod7 Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread to ARCHOS ARCHOS 5 IT (Gen7) and Gen8 tablets (Archos 28, 32, 35, 43, 70 and 101 IT)

    Changelog

The changelog for “Crow” release final is the following:
    Fixes for gen7/gen8:

Updated gapps download link bookmark in browser <– note this will only update when you use a new data.img.
Airplane mode works now and doesn’t mess with wifi anymore <– You will need a new data.img to let this properly work.
    Improved deep sleep.
Some things I may have forgotten about.
Updated to latest CM7 source code.
Turned of rooted device for original firmware by default, because unionfs eats some resources on gen7 which slow down the device a bit. It can be enabled in advanced menu in the openaos bootmenu.

    Fixes for gen8:

Mounting external sdcard on pc works internal storage not.
USB host support, keyboard, mouse works
Usb stick works and is mounted on the folder usb_host in /mnt/storage
Clicking noice when going to deep sleep is almost entirely gone, but it can still come back in some cases a reboot will fix it when it comes back.
Youtube video playback fixed. SD clips play just fine, however HD can have some stuttering (hardware restriction).
Resizing when rotating the display should be solved for A101IT. I couldn’t test it yet on A70 and A43 maybe they still need some minor adjustments.
Removed mounting of the dangerous rawfs partition

Please remember that this firmware is a work in progress, please report any bugs to OpenAOS issue tracker.

A nice feature of the SHIELD is the device can be a wireless client to a NVIDIA GeForce GTX PC, the computer renders the scene and streams a video to the portable console that is in charge of the controls. This is done with thru a fast low latency WiFI 802.11n 2×2 MIMO connection.
